Lil Wayne – Fix My Hat

Lil Wayne Fix My Hat listenAccording to Prefix Magazine, “‘Fix My Hat’ is the third track to leak off Wayne’s upcoming rock/hip-hop album, The Rebirth. The song was produced by Drew Money.” If this is indeed a Rebirth track, color me intrigued, for once. It goes without saying that the first two singles to break off from this project, “Prom Queen” and “Hot Revolver,” were anything but acceptable after a great 2007-08 of Wayne.

“Fix My Hat” is a straight up rap song that gives slight nods (hat-tips if you will) to 80s and 90s rap. Gone are the rock-riffs that littered the first two tracks. This song should be rushed as a single, Wayne needs to redeem himself to the public, not just through muddy mixtapes.

Rebrith is schedule for release on June 23, on Young Money/Cash Money/Universal. Take a listen below. Continue reading →

Lil Wayne – Prom Queen (Russ Castella Piano Version)

Russ Castella

Russ Castella

[rating:70/100]

We have all discussed at length and have voiced our thoughts on Lil Wayne’s forthcoming rock album. The consensus is quite frank: we think it sucks (so far). “Prom Queen” is a horrible song, and while “Hot Revolver” is an improvement, it is nothing to make us believe Wayne’s venture into vocoder rock music will be anywhere near good.

Then Russ Castella drops this remix in my dropbox. Gone are the rock riffage that sounded so terrible with Wayne’s vocoder’d vocals. Castella replaces the guitars with some fitting and smooth keys. We still have to put with Wayne’s vocals, but there’s no denying that this is an improvement. The vocoder is just something we obviously have to learn to live with, or learn to ignore. Upgrade your “Prom Queen” below Continue reading →

Lil’ Wayne’s “Prom Queen” Music Video: Whoops!

Yikes:

YouTube Preview Image

So this rock album is actually happening? Lil’ Wayne wasn’t just trying to play a brilliant prank on us?

What a terrible video. You know what: I shut it off midway not because of the video itself, but because I couldn’t take the song anymore. And I didn’t feel like muting my computer just to watch Weezy look at a girl’s underwear and run around with a guitar. So goodbye, “Prom Queen” video. I hope I never see you again.

Is this move to rock n’ roll as bad as I think it is for Weezy, or should we cut the guy some slack? Thanks to Videogum for the tip.

5 Best GRAMMY Performances 2009

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that the GRAMMYs were last night. It was a great show, one of the best GRAMMY Ceremonies in years. This year we enjoyed great performances from Radiohead, Paul McCartney, Coldplay, Robert Plant & Allison Krauss, U2, M.I.A., Kanye West, Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, T.I., Justin Timberlake, Stevie Wonder… the list goes on and on. The performances were so good that I just had to list my 5 favorite performances of the night! Don’t forget to tell me about your favorite performances of the night in the comments.

HM: Adele & Sugarland – What I’d Give / Chasing Pavements

YouTube Preview Image
I may not be the biggest country fan around, but I think Jennifer Nettles’ vocal delivery was fantastic, and you know what, the song isn’t so bad either. It’s great to hear beautifully sung music, regardless of genre. And Adele’s followup performance was amazing too. Highlight: Sugarland joining Adele on stage towards the end of “Chasing Pavements.”

Santogold ft. Lil Wayne & Drake – Unstoppable (Remix)

Santogold ft. Lil Wayne & Drake Unstoppable (Remix) mp3

We’ve been hearing quite a lot of new Lil Wayne lately. This one, however, doesn’t involve guitars or his rock album. This one is Lil Wayne (and his new up-and-comer Drake) rapping over a legit Diplo beat. Everyone knows that’s just as good as Diplo remixing “A Milli.”

Look for this track on Drake’s (who apparently starred in Degrassi!) upcoming mixtape, So Far Gone, which will drop via October’s Very Own. Continue reading →

Lil Wayne – Hot Revolver (off the Leak 6)

Lil Wayne Hot Revolver (off the Leak 6) listen

Yesterday we brought you “Prom Queen,” the first single off Lil Wayne’s upcoming rock album Rebirth. “Hot Revolver,” which first surfaced months ago, is rumored to be on Rebirth, and coincidentally, is on The Leak 6 in better quality, save for very few minimalistic drops. I know that for some people, this is good news.

I actually really like this Green Day-sampling track and hope it’s a quick second single, following “Prom Queen.” Does anyone think that Weezy’s Rebirth will be as well-received as Kanye’s 808s and Heartbreak? I don’t. But I’m sure Weezy has some suckerpunches on this next album that will catch our balls off guard. At least I hope so…

Lil Wayne – Prom Queen + New Album

Lil Wayne Prom Queen + New Album listen

“Prom Queen” is the first single off Lil Wayne’s new rock album Rebirth due in a few months (April 7th), according to MTV. This is NOT Tha Carter IV, or another Cater III, this is just Weezy wanting to rock out.

And you know what? It’s not terrible, but with that said, I don’t really think it’s that good either. It’s just there. Auto-tune and all. My gut feeling was that “Prom Queen” is a terrible first-single choice (not that I’ve heard the rest of the album, but I hope most of it is better than this).

How does Lil Wayne expect to sell another milli on the week of April 7th with this as the lead?

Catch “Prom Queen” after the jump Continue reading →

New Lil Wayne – Yes / I’m A Monster / Red Rum / Weezy Who

New Lil Wayne Yes / Im A Monster / Red Rum / Weezy Who listen

There are so many new Lil Wayne tracks sprouting up lately, you’d think a mixtape was slowly leaking track by track. Most of t hem aren’t noteworthy, but a few of them are pretty great, which is why I waited until enough of them leaked so I can just group them in one post. No point in having 4 or 5 Weezy posts on the home page, right? Right. Well here we go..

“Yes” is fantastic crack that reminds us why Weezy calls himself the best rapper alive. P Wills jumps on the track as well. Not to sound like some cliche hip-hop blog, but this is straight fire. We all know he’s working on Tha Carter IV (and probably V and VI too!) and here’s too hoping we get to hear it this year. This leakage pattern seems all too familiar. Check the last one. It’s just an Eminem mashup, but it gives the illusion of an actual Em/Weezy collaboration. Who wouldn’t like that? Continue reading →

pmaCAST #3 – The “Best Remixes of 2008″ Episode

pmaCAST #2 (ft. Gnarls Barkley, Amy Winehouse, Arcade Fire, Coldplay, TV on the Radio, and more) mp3

Alright, a lot of you left comments and emails asking me to podcast this years Best Remixes list, so here you have it. This is probably the only time I will have an episode of the pmaCAST be 100% remix. I know you have to be in a certain mood to listen to a remix, so I tend to steer clear from those in podcasts. Whatever the case, let me know how/if you like your remixes on your podcasts.

Not much so say here, refer to my Best Remixes of 2008 list for more on why I chose the remixes that I did. Enjoy your almost-an-entire hour of pmaCAST. A less danceable podcast is to come in a few days. I’m already almost done with it.

New Tyga ft. Lil Wayne – Breaktime

New Tyga ft. Lil Wayne Breaktime listen

To be honest, I’ve never really been a big fan of Tyga. I never really caught on when I listened to his debut No Introduction and none of the singles off the album ever clicked with ye ole ear drum. I guess I always found his cousin (Travis McCoy from Gym Class Heroes) to be a bit more interesting, but then I started to pay attention to his collaborations. I may not be a fan of his own material, but when he dips into the company ink, he does good — especially with bossman Weezy.

Just in case you didn’t know, “Breaktime” isn’t the first time Tyga’s bumped mic’s with Lil Wayne. You may remember them sharing a couple of verses on that mega “Arm’s Race” remix along with Lupe Fiasco and Kanye West (among others), or on other pretty-OK tracks like “California Love,” “Exquisite,” and “Thinkin’ Of You.”

Read on for a few of my favorite songs featuring Tyga
