Lupe Fiasco “What U Want”

Lupe Fiasco What U Want listen
We’ve been hearing a lot about Lupe Fiasco’s third and possibly final album titled  LupE.N.D. Lasers. While Lupe Fiasco leaks are a dime a dozen around the internets (I just stay away now), Lupe himself has confirmed that “What U Want” will be on Lasers.

With a release supposedly slated in early 2010, “What U Want” serves as the acting first single or taste of what we can expect from Lasers. With simple, laid back beats and equally chill and relaxing supporting vocals, we find ourselves nodding our heads along to a Lupe Fiasco heavily channelling his contemporary, Kid Cudi. If Lupe Fiasco was to perpetuate a trend in hip-hop, choosing the Kid Cudi/808 & Heartbreaks path is most refreshing. I can admit I’m growing weary of the Young Money set. You can listen to “What U Want” below: Continue reading →

Lupe Fiasco – The National Anthem

Lupe Fiasco The National Anthem listen

I posted Lupe Fiasco’s Enemy of the State mixcassette the other day, but it looks like the links have since been deleted. I won’t replenish the links because I don’t know why they were deleted, so if you want the tape, a Google search will do you a world of good. I did, however, want to share one specific track from Enemy.

On the smartest track on the project, Lupe Fiasco wraps himself in a hot as fire Radiohead sample. Sampling Radiohead in hip hop isn’t anything new, per se, but it’s always a tricky endeavor, and more often than not, a double-edged sword.

Lupe Fiasco takes on Radiohead’s Kid A classic, “The National Anthem”, easily Radiohead’s most hip-hop friendly track. This isn’t the first time we’ve heard a prolific rapper over “The National Anthem”, however. If you recall, the Jaydiohead project mashed together Jay-Z’s “99 Problems” and Radiohead’s “The National Anthem” and the result was glorious.

Lupe Fiasco’s take on “The National Anthem” was made in the same style as his recent, rather aimless “diss” tracks. Things do pick up, though, when Radiohead’s jazz ensemble comes in in the last 50 seconds of the track. Props to another artist who can wear “The National Anthem” with ease and skill. Lupe Fiasco – Enemy Of The State: A Love Story (Mixtape)

Lupe Fiasco Enemy Of The State: A Love Story (Mixtape) listenArtwork by Shake

Lupe Fiasco has finally released his hotly anticipated mixtape, Enemy of the State: A Love Story. Lupe calls Enemy a “cassette” because it is intended to be heard in a continuous fashion. He wants you to forget that CD players and MP3 players introduced the “skip” button, but honestly, why would you want to skip any of these tracks?

On this rap cassette (the first of its kind?), Lupe is heard rapping over some slick samples by some of his musical heroes including: Radiohead, Jay-Z, Timbaland and Lil Wayne. Read on for the full tracklists and two ways to download: Continue reading →

Lupe Fiasco – Solar Midnite (ft. Japanese Cartoon)

Lupe Fiasco Solar Midnite (ft. Japanese Cartoon) listen
Surprised to hear that Lupe’s new song, “Solar Midnite” is used in the upcoming Twilight movie? Like we joked before, the track list is amazing (Lykke Li, Killers, and Thom Yorke?!), possibly even soundtrack of the year worthy, so… who wouldn’t want to get a piece?!

Lupe “collaborates” with “his band,” Japanese Cartoon, to create an interesting and fitting track for the film. It doesn’t sound like your typical Lupe track, but it is well matched to the basic characteristics of Japanese Cartoon.  He composed the track after viewing an early, unfinished screening of film.  He said he was trying to pull together the elements of the chaotic love story, which builds among the characters and translate it into a great song. I think the rock side of Lupe stands strong and is very enjoyable.

“Solar Midnite” appears as a bonus track for the New Moon soundtrack, which is now available via iTunes. Listen to it here: Continue reading →

Lupe Fiasco – Fire

Another classic cut from hip-hop MC Lupe Fiasco? “Fire” is hottttt, that’s a fact. Is Fiasco’s new track just as sizzilin’ (yeah, I just used that word) as its title? Debatable topic for sure. It’s clear why many Lupe fans love this song, while it’s also obvious that the track has flaws making it short of praise.

He fuses Hendrix sample sounds, which tend to be a bit messy throughout, with his signature flow. The rap seems to be a bit dull, not bad, just not as flawless as we have heard in the past from Fiasco. And the beat is typical Lupe, but it lacks heart and sweat. At points it sounds like he just threw down tracks to get something out quick. I do love the Hendrix sample sounds, however, I will stand by the fact that I think that Hendrix and hip-hop don’t mix (ie: Fat Joe trying to remix him also, which turned out “just okay”). Listen to “Fire” below Continue reading →

Eva ft. Lupe Fiasco – Slow Down

Eva ft. Lupe Fiasco Slow Down listen
“Slow Down” works like this: classy R&B lady croons about young men moving too fast over an echo-y club beat of faux strings and thudding bass drum, popular rapper adds a verse from the point of view of said young men, inserting proof of his bad-assery, song ends with auto-tuned reprise of catchy, snappy one-liner chorus. Eva’s soprano is pretty, the beat is classy and dancy, and Lupe’s verse is alright, but I simply cannot muster much positivity about this song because I am pretty sure I have heard it two million times before, and in this incarnation the lyrics are pretty lame. “Save your tears for a rainy day!”

If classy R&B ladies auto-tuning about pushy dudes are your thing, you might appreciate this song far more than me. Give it a listen. Continue reading →

Japanese Cartoon – Crowd Participation / In the Jaws of the Lords of Death

Japanese Cartoon Crowd Participation / In the Jaws of the Lords of Death listen

As far as creative side-projects go, Lupe Fiasco takes the cake. Japanese Cartoon is not another annoying Strokes or Jack White side band, but something that will keep Lupe Fiasco with us, because he is still planning to “retire” after LupEND drops sometime in the OH-9 (the oh so insightful Confusion pointed out that “retirement” is the new “rehab”). The little tastes Japanese Cartoon has offered us thus far have been noteworthy and somewhat satifying, but nothing mind-blowing, something that I use often to discribe Lupe Fiasco’s music. At least until now… Continue reading →

Mick Boogie & Terry Urban: 2009 GRAMMY Nominees Remixed

Mick Boogie & Terry Urban: 2009 GRAMMY Nominees Remixed mp3
via Mick’s blog:

Ever wonder how Kanye would sound rapping on Kenna’s song? What if The Jonas Brothers sang over some hiphop breakbeats? What if Thom Yorke sang on Lupe’s “Superstar?” What if Sara Bareilles bought a sampler and not a piano? The list goes on… but the answers can be found here.

I usually enjoy Mick Boogie’s and Terry Urban’s periodical mixtapes, but when they get on one together, magic ensues. This one also hits close to home — I love the GRAMMYs, no matter how flawed they obviously are. Anyway, a lot of these are jammin’. The tracklist + highlights + full download links after the jump! Japanese Cartoon – Firing Squad

Japanese Cartoon Firing Squad listen

I’ve wondered if I was the only person who is taking Japanese Cartoon seriously and as a legitimate musical project. I probably am.

Lupe Fiasco or not, I hope to hear an album full of Japanese Cartoon tracks. Luckily a couple of PMA readers dropped this new track, “Firing Squad” onto my gmail inbox. It’s actually pretty good. Not as good as Heirplanes or AMY, but it still keeps me excited and hopeful for a Japanese Cartoon LP (please?). Continue reading →
