DAN’S DANCE PARTY

DANS DANCE PARTY listenThe first time is the hardest, or so they say.  While this might not apply to activities you can do while shitfaced drunk (sex, riding a bike, driving, delivering a baby), it DEFINITELY applies to writing for an awesome, successful blog.  My name is Dan, and I’ve been word-masturbating (writing a blog with 5 readers) for a while, but now I’m about to have word-sex with all of you, and I’m a little nervous.  I’m here to let you know that breaking it down is the SHIT, and to bring you the newest developments and most awesome artists in the “breaking it down” umbrella of musical genres.  So!  Once a week,  you’ll get to read my fucking AWESOME words, in one of 3, that’s right 3, fan-tas-tic formats: Continue reading →

N.A.S.A. – Gifted ft. Kanye West, Santigold & Lykke Li (Steve Aoki Remix)

N.A.S.A. Gifted ft. Kanye West, Santigold & Lykke Li (Steve Aoki Remix) mp3
Much love for Steve Aoki, especially for his last remixes. He has already remixed one of my favorite singles of 08/09, “Spaceman” and now he’s here to sink his teeth into N.A.S.A. glorious debut single, “Gifted” featuring Kanye West, Santigold and Lykke Li.

His remix of “Gifted” is an erratic ode to Steve Aoki’s excellent live turntablism. If you’ve been to one of his sets, you can close your eyes and see yourself back at the show. And if you haven’t been to one of his shows, you’ve got yourself an excellent, fist-pumpin’, get-your-ass-on-the-door remix to jam to this weekend. Continue reading →

Röyksopp – Junior Album Review

Editor’s note: We are circling back to some of the great albums of 2009 that we have not yet reviewed, if you have any suggestions, please leave them in the comments
Röyksopp Junior Album Review album reviews reviews 2
[rating:84/100]
If I had my way, this review would simple. In a word: Perfection. Sadly, I’m sure the editor would have something snippy to say about that (fascist!), so allow me to flesh this one out.

The boys of Röyksopp have been hard at work over the past three years conjuring up their third major album, Junior. Like a Nordic creation of Frankenstein proportions (I’ll allow time to envision the monster as a blonde), the album operates as a complex series of bits and pieces mixed together, pasting together the moody beats of Melody AM with the tenderest bits of pop-mindedness from The Understanding.

To do so, the duo have enlisted a superstar cast of Swedish chanteuses, including Lykke Li, Robyn, and Karin Dreijer (as well as fellow Norde Anneli Drecker)—a line-up indie-licious enough to make the pants of the Pitchfork crew grow even tighter at the waist. Continue reading →

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009 (.25 of the way through)

Today is the 91st day of 2009, or (almost) exactly one quarter of the way through 2009. Is it too soon to start thinking of “Best Songs” honors? I don’t think so!

Before I get into the list, I want to set up some ground rules: The only songs eligible are songs that were released as singles in 2009 (Jan 1st – March 31st, in this case). This will really limit this initial list, as some of my favorite songs of the year have been non-single album tracks, like “Summertime Clothes” by Animal Collective, or “Dull Life” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Well, actually, I think that’s the only rule.

Let’s get on to the list, shall we? Continue reading →

Remix-A-Day: Lykke Li – Little Bit (Villains Remix)

Because we are focusing more on upcoming musical releases around here, new remixes get the short end of the PMA stick, sadly. I am determined to devote one post a day on new remixes, instead of bunching 10+ remixes in bulk. That has become somewhat tacky. Click here to read all of our Remix-A-Day remixes.

Remix A Day: Lykke Li Little Bit (Villains Remix) mp3

This is Sexy Friday treat indeed.

The Villains, who have been KILLING it lately, have finally remixed Lykke Li’s “Little Bit.” The song has already seen many great remixes in the past from Death To The Throne, Gigamesh, CSS, and Loving Hand and now it’s time to add Villains to the list. I guarentee that this one will be playing everywhere this weekend.

Previously remixed by Villains: Britney Spears’ “Circus” and Bloc Party’s “Ares.” Continue reading →

The Starters – Girls ‘GO! Hard EP

The Starters Girls GO! Hard EP mp3

You guys remember the Starts DJs right? Yeah, you remember; they’re some of the freshest cool kids straight out of Chicago. Their debut EP Girls ‘GO Hard features Lykke Li, Kid Sister, Lady Sovereign, and Lady GaGa. I waited until today to post this one because I know a lot of you are looking for some cool party music for your Friday night.

Not only did they just drop a pretty slick EP, but they played with NASA on their Spirit of Apollo Tour on March 7th. That was, without a doubt, an amazing show. These guys know how to put the dancefloor on fire. Read on for the EPs track list, show dates and some downloads: Continue reading →

Royksopp – Miss It So Much (ft. Lykke Li) / The Girl and The Robot (ft. Robyn)

Royksopp Miss It So Much (ft. Lykke Li) / The Girl and The Robot (ft. Robyn) listen
Maybe I’m a little embarrassed at the intense levels of excitement that were coursing through my veins when Royksopp’s Junior made it’s way to my inbox. I finally gave it a proper second listen this morning. My initial listen was vapidly rushed due to the heavy Veckatimest and It’s Blitz listening that was going down this weekend. But a new week has started and I’m ready to re-tackle Royksopp’s utterly fantastic new album, Junior. Look out for an official review later — today I’m only scoping out “Miss It So Much” featuring Lykke Li, and “The Girl and The Robot” featuring Robyn on the vocals.

It may or may not be because I love the music these women put out individually, but these two songs are definitely highlights of mine. I love (heart) them! Continue reading →

pmaCAST #7: The “Valentine’s Day 2009″ Episode

pmaCAST #7: The Valentines Day 2009 Episode mp3

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone! You know I had to join in on the cheese and pull this week’s pmaCAST early with a Valentine’s Day-themed episode!  Hopefully some of you enjoy it enough to listen to it with someone special tonight. Just maybe.

Because I assume that 99.9% of the movie-going population will be watching some sort of chick flick (I’m not ashamed to admit that I liked He’s Just No That Into You, and will probably watch Confessions of a Shopoholic tonight), I wanted to structure this playlist like 99.9% of the chick flicks out there. So I’ve come up with a story that I hope would play out well in songs. Or maybe you want to see this as a hopeful soundtrack to some V-Day movie coming out in 2010. Either way, here it is…

N.A.S.A. – The Spirit of Apollo Album Review

N.A.S.A. The Spirit of Apollo Album Review album reviews reviews 2

[rating:77/100]

I guess the first thing to say is that The Spirit of Apollo is good. Very good. The turntablism is good, the rapping is good, the vocals are good… it’s very good. It better be too, I mean, anytime you have Tom Waits, Del tha Funkee Homosapien, Chuck D, The Cool Kids, Santogold, Kanye West, DJ AM, and Seu Jorge gathered up to jam, you better have a special result. If not, you’ve done something wrong. N.A.S.A. ends up doing it all right though and certainly succeeds in delivering a great album. I wasn’t struck by anything being altogether original on this album, but the record is a powerful fusion of existing styles and methods. Because this album is not written as a single piece, it doesn’t flow like one, and I’m going to review it SportsCenter style. Get ready for the musical top plays. These are the songs that stood out to me: Continue reading →
