N.A.S.A., Lykke Li Get the Remix Treatment

N.A.S.A., Lykke Li Get the Remix Treatment mp3

N.A.S.A – Whatchadoin feat. Santogold, M.I.A., iCatching, & Spank Rock (David Starfire Remix) | A Volta feat. Amanda Blank, Lovefoxxx, & Sizzla (Database Remix)

It hasn’t even a couple of weeks since the N.A.S.A. dropped, and we’re already seeing some wicked remixes. The first is David Starfire’s remix of “Whatchadoin,” one of my favorite tracks off The Spirit of Apollo. This remix is less of a remix in terms of it changing the musicality of the song, but it adds a lot to the original track — it’s a lot more enjoyable now, a lot more dancefloor-ready. I’m not sure what to think about the extra iCatching he put in there, but it seems to work fine with the song. On the second remix, Database, really transforms “A Volta” (another favorite) into a synth slow-burner. The remix starts throwing it down as soon as Amanda Blank’s verse comes. Great stuff.

Lykke Li – Dance Dance Dance (80kidz Remix)

I’ve never really given these Tokyo based DJs a chance before, but when you remix/cover Lykke Li, I’m definitely going to be listening. I really like what the ‘kidz’ did with Lykke Li’s “Dance Dance Dance.” The humming and bubbling-under synth sounds great with the Lykke Li-style percussion and vocals played over it. This remix, or reimagination of “Dance Dance Dance” is good for recreational listening, and not so much for the dancefloor — but that’s okay. Continue reading →

Lykke Li – Can I Kick It (A Tribe Called Quest Cover)

YouTube Preview Image

I love that Lykke Li loves hip hop. Everytime I see her rapping, it makes me want to listen to Youth Novels more.

Lykke Li – First Unitarian Church – January 30th, 2009

Lykke Li First Unitarian Church January 30th, 2009 live performances

While I haven’t been to many concerts, I never thought I’d be standing in a church or sitting in a pew listening to a girl singing about she keeps her legs apart. Nor did I think I’d be watching an artist sing or dance by candlelight. I also never thought I’d hear a Swedish singer rapping to Lil’ Wayne’s “A Milli.” Lykke Li performed last Friday at the First Unitarian Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and did the unexpected. When I first found Lykke, I thought she was a little weird and too “adult contemporary” for me to enjoy. After buying (yes, actually purchasing) Youth Novels at Best Buy on a whim, I fell in love. The album is full of amazing sounds and lyrics, leaving me wondering why she didn’t receive album of the year.

What’s Going On?

In NYC:  The best bet of the week may just be tonight’s Frightened Rabbit acoustic, all-request show at le Poisson Rouge. Otherwise, Lykke Li is playing tonight (Webster Hall) and Tuesday (Music Hall of Williamsburg- which will from now on be abbreviated as MHoW). Up-and-comers Passion Pit are playing the Bowery on Wednesday night, while Beirut, promoting their new, promising double-album, will be playing the MHoW. But don’t worry if you miss Zach Condon and friends there, they’ll be at the BAM Opera House on Friday night.

But Beirut is far from your only Friday night option. Little Boots will be bopping heads at Studio B, and The Black Keys will rock out Terminal 5- although probably not as heavily as The Boss rocked it in his halftime show rehersal (speaking of which, if you haven’t bought your Bruce tickets yet, they’re probably all gone. But have no fear- more shows will likely be announced very soon). The Black Keys will be at the Terminal again on Saturday.

And don’t worry about missing Beirut for either Boots or the Keys on Friday either, because they’ll be playing the BAM again on Saturday. A busy week for them.

In LA: If you’re feeling left out of the Beirut party in Los Angeles, don’t worry- Continue reading →

Lykke Li – Tonight (Video Version)

Lykke Li Tonight (Video Version) listen

I posted the video for Lykke Li’s “Tonight” a few days ago and noticed that the version on the video was different than the version on the album. She seems to be singing the song live just for the video (which is really cool, by the way).

Thankfully Sean extended his mp3 ripping powers (once again) and provided for the “Video Version” of Lykke Li’s “Tonight.” Jump Jump!  Continue reading →

Lykke Li – Tonight

Not sure if I’ll ever get enough of Lykke Li. I don’t post music videos here often, but I think I’m going to start to. “Tonight,” which appears on the US release of Lykke Li’s debut Youth Novels, has one of the most budgeted music videos of the year, seriously.

But what I would have never guessed is how artistic a “one shot/static background” (as Stereogum puts it) music video could be. Lykke Li’s facial expressions and bearly-there fidgeting brings in all of the raw emotion that a video with a $10,000 or $50,000 price tag offers. Continue reading →

What’s Going On? January 26-February 1

Whats Going On? January 26 February 1 gigs

As Perez would say, Completely Gratuitous

Another week, another series of concerts across the globe.

In NYC: If you’re an Andrew Bird kind of guy (or girl), check him out at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Monday night, or, if you’d prefer, the Carnegie Hall on Wednesday!

Wednesday night, I highly recommend you snag some tickets, somehow, to catch the Cold War Kids at the intimate Mercury Lounge. If not, however, buy your tickets way in advance for their April Terminal 5 show- I’ll be at that one for sure.

N.A.S.A. IN N.Y.C.! Thursday night! At (le) Poisson Rouge!  Be there. And then stay there until Saturday, catching They Might Be Giants on Saturday for a kids show at 3:00,  and an 18+ show at 8:00!

Two more great concerts in the city- Continue reading →

Q&A Friday: Is It Too Early To Talk About Music Festivals?

Q&A Friday: Is It Too Early To Talk About Music Festivals? mp3

So this week’s question is an easy one: Are you going to Coachella? Or are you saving your money for another festival? I also know that this passed year hasn’t been all too nice to anyone’s wallet. Hopefully I can help out.

This week’s Q&A is sponsored by the Lagerado Music Festival. They are being really cool and giving PMA Two (2) tickets to giveaway to one lucky winner. That’s right, you get to go to Langerado for FREE. All you have to do is get yourself there, get a hotel, buy your booz and drugs and enjoy the cool lineup (Death Cab For Cutie, Snoop Dogg, The Faint, Ryan Adams, Broken Social Scene, Cold War Kids, Chromeo, Girl Talk, Black Kids, The Virgins, Tokyo Police Club, Ra Ra Riot, ah, just check the whole lineup here), oh and you have to answer the question! Kleerup & Lykke Li – Until We Bleed

Kleerup & Lykke Li Until We Bleed listen

I know, I know, it seems like I’m trying to give you some sort of Lykke Li overload lately, but I can’t help that she is coming up with some great music lately. This one is a track Lykke Li did with Kleerup called “Until We Bleed.”

To be quite honest, I’m not the biggest Kleerup fan. Not because I don’t like the music, but mostly out of inexperience. But Lykke Li does sound amazing over a beat like this, I’ll give him that much (he also produced Robyn’s “With Every Heartbeat,” I especially liked that one). Give it a listen, you’ll be hooked. Poketknife remixes one of Lykke Li’s most beloved songs and it’s quite lovely. This remix kills me.
