Massive Attack – Psyche (ft. Martina Topley Bird) (Van Rivers & The Subliminal Kid Remix)

Massive Attack Psyche (ft. Martina Topley Bird) (Van Rivers & The Subliminal Kid Remix) mp3

Known for their trippy assembly of tunes, the British duo, Massive Attack are getting ready to release their new EP, which features a few remixes, Van Rivers & The Subliminal Kid’s remix of “Psyche,” being one of them.

The instrumental opening is intriguing and promising, but once the vocals chime in I feel like I am falling down the rabbit hole in Alice in Wonderland. I feel that that Martina Topley Bird’s signature eerie vocals clash with a synthetic guitar to create a tune that is too slow to dance to but not leisurely enough to relax and get lost in. Overall, the song reminds me of a leaking faucet and I find myself tortured by the continuing drops that I yearn to turn off. The duo is thought of as experimental, so there is a reason for that and its expressed in this upcoming EP.

Look for their EP October 5, which will be released digitally and physically (on vinyl also), named after “Splitting the Atom.” Listen to “Psyche” here Continue reading →

Massive Attack – Pray For Rain (ft. TV On The Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe)

Massive Attack Pray For Rain (ft. TV On The Radios Tunde Adebimpe) listen

Massive Attack, known for their downtempo, apocalyptic trip-hop, and Tunde Adebimpe of TV on the Radio, known for their downtempo, apocalyptic indie rock, have collaborated on a track for Massive Attack’s latest EP, Splitting the Atom. And surprisingly, the result – titled “Praying for Rain” – isn’t the most depressing thing ever.

Adebimpe’s nonchalant, floaty, almost playful verses fit nicely with the song’s simple drum beat and ominous piano chords. The song slowly builds until halfway through the track, with bass drums going full force and with Adebimpe singing a hypnotic, abstract chorus, suddenly there’s an angelic, uplifting breakdown filled with not ominous despair, but…hope?

At seven minutes long, this beautiful seconds-long musical interlude doesn’t break through the track’s dark clouds long enough before dragging its feet again for another three minutes. Nonetheless, it’s an interesting collaboration between two top-notch artists that deserves your ears. Virgin is releasing Splitting the Atom in stores October 6 in the U.S (October 5 in the U.K.). Massive Attack – Splitting the Atom

Massive Attack Splitting the Atom listen

Massive Attack is back with an EP containing four new songs, two of which are remixed. If you notice on the track list, all the songs feature a guest vocalist, such as TV on the Radio’s Tunde Adebimpe. Horce Andy guest-vocals on “Splitting The Atom,” a chilly, yet intriguing track that premiered on BCC Radio 1 August 25. The track sounds like a play on the virtual band Gorillaz, a tad creepy, but not completely outlandish.

Virgin will release Massive Attack’s EP, Splitting the Atom, October 5, 2009.  They will do a physical, digital and vinyl release of the record simultaneously. Listen to “Splitting the Atom” here Continue reading →

Mashups You Shouldn’t Live Without!

Mashups You Shouldnt Live Without! mp3

Well hello there my lovelies. I feel kind of blurgh getting out of bed today (though it’s well into the afternoon). Gotta love those lazy days. I need to down some Cinnamon Dolce Latte from down the street before I try to dent this massive paper I have due in oh, 3 hours.
Before I hit my responsibilities, I need some relax time. Out of habit, mostly, I automatically opened up iTunes. I was in the mood for some mashups. Here’s a collection of a few that will make your lives a lot more enjoyable.

Mixer master Icky lays it smooth with Ms. Alicia Keys, Biggie Smalls, Marvin Gaye, and to top it off our favorite beehive yielding whack-off, Amy Winehouse.

The next mashup is one of the best of the year, if not of this century. Parisian DJ Moule proves he deserves the status given to Mark Ronson, and Justice with his star-studded gem.

Listen to CSS vs Velvet Underground vs LCD Soundsystem vs Chemical Brothers – Can’t Stand Dance (YSI)

Is everyone ready for Alive 2007? It’s out in early December. In honor if Daft Punk’s nonstop sonic high, LA’s own DJ Shyboy mashes the duo up with pop’s biggest star, at the moment, Justin Timberlake. Woo hoo.

To be honest, I haven’t seen or heard a better all-female mashup like the captivating track taken from Wax Audio’s Mashopolis collection.

Listen to Tori Amos vs Bjork vs PJ Harvey vs Massive Attack – Dissolved By The Water All These Years (YSI)

This next one gives me goosebumps! Such a perfect ambient cut ready for the creeping winter. Arty Fufkin gorgeously offers this tribute to France’s Air, with chilling vocals from the ever-surprising Lily Allen.

To wrap things up, lets mix the indie rock sounds of PrettyMuchAmazing!’s band of the moment, Bloc Party with the scintillating Fergie. Bloc Party’s most vital track, “Banquet” is a mixer’s dream, it sounds heavenly with just about anything smeared over it, under it, beside it… you get it, right? It is most interesting to hear Fergie’s whiny ‘Fergalicious’ spread over Bloc Party’s undeniably catchy, edgy dance-riffs and slick drums. Courtesy of DJ Schmolli.
