Music From Gossip Girl: Season 3, Episode 5

Yeah, I know… I’m a day late on this, but I only watched this week’s episode last night. Musically, the episode was a winner. It included two of my favorite artists of 2009, indie rock’s cutest duo Matt & Kim and everyone’s French rockers, Phoenix. But what was more exciting was that Sonic Youth made a great cameo on Gossip Girl and not only played at, but MARRIED Lily and Rufus, thanks to a “shady internet service”. I say that is how you soundtrack good TV.

Music From Gossip Girl: Season 3, Episode 1

We used to do this thing where Gossip Girl’s and Chuck’s episodic music selections would go head to head in a “showdown” and you, the beautiful readers, would vote for your favorite playlist. After Gossip Girl’s continual ass-kicking, I decided to move on from Chuck and onto the slightly hipper 90210. While being a bit more of a competitor, Gossip Girl still creamed 90210 in the polls. Instead of moving on to other music-savvy shows (i.e. Entourage, etc.), I think it’s time we just focused on the show that has had great music for over two seasons now.
Alex Pastavas, the music supervisor for Gossip Girl (as well as Grey’s Anatomy, Chuck, The OC, Mad Men, and Twilight) has done a great job on the show’s music and is keeping it up for the show’s third season, which premiered last night. The season premiere featured one of this year’s favorite new artists, Miike Snow, as well as the cute, indie-pop duo Matt & Kim. They also brought in fresh faces (to me anyway), Brakes with their catchy tune “Oh! Forever.” Here is Episode 1’s full playlist:

Matt & Kim – Daylight (DJ Troublemaker Remix ft. De La Soul)

DJ Troublemaker remixes Brooklyn duo’s Matt and Kim’s upbeat pop heavy melody “Daylight.” The remix features the group De La Soul who rap over the original vocals. The chorus is kept the same (words and Matt’s vocals) but techno like electronics replace the synth pop sound of the original.
DJ Troublemaker says, “Words cannot describe the amount of happiness this song brings me. I consider De La Soul to be the greatest group in the history of hip hop. And, growing up and getting into music production, never did I think I would have the opportunity to work with them. Well, all that changed with this here remix.”
I’m a big fan of the original, but “Daylight” was remixed for NBA Live 10 and now has a club feel to it. I can definitely see DJs interjecting segments of this song in dance mixes. De La Soul also does a good job on the vocals, the contrast of rap and electronic is always appealing. Listen to it here Continue reading →
