New MGMT “Congratulations”

New MGMT Congratulations listen

Earlier this week, MGMT debuted the first single from their hotly anticipated Oracular Spectacular follow-up, Congratulations. It would not be an overstatement to say that “Flash Delirium” was welcomed by a flurry of mixed reactions by fans (personally, I thought it was great).

Well, the album’s title track, “Congratulations” has leaked, and you can listen to it too now (and download it, if you’re sneaky). If you weren’t big on “Flash Delirium”, you probably won’t be into “Congratulations”, but I can’t see why that would be the case. Listen to the track below, and pre-order Congratulations at Insound. New MGMT “Flash Delirium”

New MGMT Flash Delirium favorite songs

MGMT, one of the most beloved psychedelic indie-pop acts of the late 00s, have “returned” with the first free sample from their forthcoming sophomore effort, Congratulations. The song, “Flash Delirium” favors “Weekend Warriors” and “The Handshake” from MGMT’s 2007/2008 debut, over trailblazing hits like “Kids” and “Time To Pretend“. Don’t let that retract from your excitement though; “Flash Delirium” is still a mind-bending ride worthy of that ridiculous album art work (above). As I’ve said before, MGMT is giving the MP3 for “Flash Delirium” away. So go ahead and download it: Continue reading →

Wolf Gang – The King And All Of His Men

Wolf Gang The King And All Of His Men favorite songsI’ve been listening to a lot of happy music this month. That’s a trend I don’t want to end just yet, and it’s a trend that Wolf Gang perpetuates with excellent single “The King And All Of His Men.”

Think the glitzy pop of The Killers without the self-seriousness, or MGMT minus the heavy beats (maybe even a little bit of Empire of the Sun?),  “King And All Of His Men” rocks out with pounding piano chords, swirling synths, and epic “oohs.”  The sound is unique, catchy, and just BIG.

This is full, expansive, music, building towards an ending complete with tribal drums, hand-claps, choral harmonies, and layers and layers of sound. “King” will surely be filling arenas, and should be filling your iPod headphones for the rest of the day, if not the year.

Chiddy Bang, ‘The Swelly Express’ Mixtape Premiere

Chiddy Bang, The Swelly Express Mixtape Premiere feature“The Swelly Express” is the true story of two college kids (Chidera Anamege and Xaphoon Jones) from Philly who rocked some parties at Drexel and quickly gained the attention of “the industry”.  The music and lyrics were inspired by many boring trips on the Chinatown bus (they have wifi now!) on the way to meet “big wigs” in NYC. After a bunch of nice dinners and some free drinks for these 2 underage kids, Chiddy Bang decided to make a mixtape. PMA is proud to present this mixtape with OnSMASH and Crooks & Castles.

Honestly, I didn’t expect anything this fresh from Kid CuDi. Personal expectations for his debut Man On The Moon: The End Of Day were low. I wrote him off as just another blog fad, riding the electro wave to its crash with the Crookers remix of megahit ‘Day N Nite’, and overshadowed by a star-studded guest list and production on ‘Make Her Say’ without proving anything about his own artistic merit – of which I believed he had none. His flow was too awkward, too much of a pale imitation of his producer and mentor, Kanye West (and we all know by now the world only needs one Kanye West). But after giving the album a solid listen and more, the music has spoken and I’ve had a change of heart: CuDi is for real. Continue reading →

Kid Cudi – Pursuit of Happiness (ft. MGMT & RATATAT)

Kid Cudi Pursuit of Happiness (ft. MGMT & RATATAT) listen

Kid Cudi has been burning up everybody’s radar since his exceptional mixtape hit the web last summer. His chart-topping single, “Day N Nite” has catapulted Kid Cudi to superstardom. Expectations for his debut album, Man on the Moon: The End of Day, were reaching monumental levels at this point.

Because of his affiliation with hip-hop genius Kanye West, we all (I included) came to expect a 2009 College Dropout from Kid Cudi. Not surprisingly, the album leaked before its September 15th release date, and after a handful of listens (4 so far), it misses the bar set by Kanye’s debut album. Man On The Moon is on a whole other playing field, setting up bars of its own. A bar that fellow newcomers Wale and Drake now must meet, and to be frank, a bar they probably cannot hang onto with the longevity proposed by Man on the Moon.

The third official single off the record, “Pursuit of Happiness,” was produced by electronic duo Ratatat and features Brooklyn superheroes MGMT. The beat is smooth and slick — props Ratatat. It wraps itself nicely around Kid Cudi’s painstaking lyrics and MGMT’s subdued vocal contributions.

Man on the Moon: The End of Day is out September 15th and a deluxe edition with a DVD will also be released. Catch Ratatat and Cudi performing “Pursuit of Happiness” on “The Late Night Show With David Letterman” tomorrow (Tuesday). Listen to the track here: Continue reading →

PMA Presents… The Xaphoon Jones Mixtape Vol. 1

PMA Presents... The Xaphoon Jones Mixtape Vol. 1 mixtapes musicWe knew Xaphoon Jones first as the producer and the sampling mastermind behind the quickly rising Chiddy Bang. Chiddy Bang owe most of the publicity they get to the tight, slick samples this guy has crafted for them. Like a musical pickpocket, Xaphoon Jones showed us that he has an ear for contemporary music and making it work in unconventional environments. With his debut eponymous mixtape, Xaphoon pushes passed the boundaries we thought he had and dips into soulful Motown favorites, East Coast Rap, and Reggae.

The Xaphoon Jones Mixtape Vol. 1 introduces us to a very young, very talented producer full of promise, if not power. Pretty Much Amazing is proud to present this mixtape for your consumption. Download it, put it on your iPod, burn it onto a CD, play it at a party, send it to your friends.
