INTERVIEW: Casxio

So a few weeks ago, CMJ was happening, and we were all running around like dance crazed party girls. Now that the dust has more than officially settled, we can tell you that some pretty cool shit went down. We talked to some folks. We caught some shows.

One of the people we talked to was Lucas Guerin of electro funk rock band Casxio. Emerging on the scene quite effectively with their EP Seventeen (released on The Hours Entertainment records) the video for the single views like an ode to 80s minimalist serenades to love ala Crying Game. Complete with fog machine, laser lights and the lone female professing her unrequited desire for a certain androgynous individual, it’s brilliant, really.

Music From Gossip Girl: Season 3, Episode 4

Gossip Girl’s music selection for its third season is finally getting interesting. Last night’s star-studded episode (insert: read NY Mag’s hilarious and inspired GG recaps every Tuesday morning), was the season’s most interesting, musically and otherwise.

As always, Gossip Girl played a handful of tracks by small bands you probably never heard of, but Alex Pastavas always keeps a goodie for the Gossip Girl’s closing monologue (which was awfully good last night).

Last week they closed with Miike Snow’s “Animal,” in a cutesy scene, and but this week they turned to Passion Pit’s “Moth’s Wings” in a plot-relevant scene. I’m more impressed by Pastavas’ decision to license “Moth’s Wings” (over other delectable Passion Pit cuts like “Little Secrets” or “The Reeling”) than the actual use of the track. It’s impossible to keep up with the countless tributes made to honor the late King of Pop, but here are a two that really caught my ear. I first spotted James Morrison’s cover of MJ’s classic (and one of my favorite songs altogether) “Man In The Mirror” on Perez Hilton, natch. James Morrison’s voice is a blessing, but not even his sweet vocals do “Man In The Mirror” justice. Honestly, this is the kind of song that just can’t be done any other way but Michael Jackson’s way.

Yesterday news of the passing of the King of Pop came flooding through the newsfeeds. In a world full of people of different colors, languages, ideas, and ideals, we are united in a state of mourning and remembrance of this undeniable icon. Not only was Michael Jackson a pioneer and a legend in music, but a beloved humanitarian that taught the world to come together. United we were in his prime, and united we are now.

In recent years, many of our favorite musicians have paid tribute to the King of Pop with covers. Some covers are more famous than others, and I don’t think I’ve seen Alicia Keys’ rendition of “Human Nature” make the rounds much, so here it is in its orchestral glory. Continue reading →

It’s Sunday and I’m sort of bummed. Bummed because I can’t go here anymore and download wicked remixes every Sunday afternoon. I’m sure many people here feel the same way, so here’s to keeping the seat warm until Palm’s Out moves over to wordpress!

PS: Wordpress is THE shit. And if you’re still on blogger, go die you need to move your butt over to Wordpress ASAP. You don’t have a single excuse. Rihanna completely owned the radio and the digital charts in 2007 and 2008. The little superstar is planning to take over 2009 as well with her fourth album. “Sexuality” is the first clip from LP4 to surface. 

Rihanna is no stranger to borrowing yesterday’s huge hits to make some damage of her own. In the past, she has taken over with singles sampling Michael Jackson and Soft Cell. This time she’s hitting up Prince himself for a hook to what may be a future dynomite hit. “Sexuality” sample’s Prince’s brilliant 1981 hit “Controversy”.

I’m all for Little Miss Sunshine sampling Prince (or Michael Jackson, or Soft Cell. Especially Soft Cell) because it’s really helping her zero in on that techno-pop/rock sound that she has notoriously revived. In the past, I have gone as far as to claim that Rihanna is, in fact, the Nazarene that will issue the new pop revival pop music has been starving so long for:

Here’s to hoping I won’t have to do THAT again!

Hello everybody!

I think (keyword: think) Pretty Much Amazing is ready to open for business. I have the theme figured out and everything in place. There are a few details that kind of suck (big time). For example, due to technical difficulties — really stupid ones — all posts from April to late June are lost. This is extremely depressing, but it hasn’t brought us down yet.

I do want to make it clear, just in case I already haven’t, that this blog has been temporary shut down, twice now, due to the massive server load we carry out every day. At one point in May and June, the server couldn’t take it anymore and my host had to give me the boot. All these fancy words like server and hosts confuse me just as much as it does you, so it took me quite a while to figure out what my b-plan was. Hopefully I have chosen a stable host that won’t implode with PMA’s traffic load. :)

But enough of the unpleasantnesses, lets move on to the music. I won’t even attempt to catch everyone up on what has been happening in the music world over the last few weeks. I trust that you guys have been scattering around the internet educating yourself… at least a little?

I’ll compromise, I’ll cover what’s been going on over the last few days.

Michael Jackson Akon Hold My Hand

Nothing has been more excited or buzztastic as that new Michael Jackson / Akon collaboration, unsettlingly called “Hold My Hand.”

I really don’t know if this is a Michael Jackson song or an Akon song… I’ve seen it both ways. Clarification? The song isn’t that great, but it’s good enough to deserve the attention it has been getting.

I hope I don’t get into too much trouble:

Jay-Z

This is probably equally as “shocking” and way more bad ass than MJ and Akon: Jay-Z covering Oasis’ supermegaultra-famous “Wonderwall” live at Glastonbury.

Bloc Party - Mercury

And more recently, Bloc Party unleashes new single and video, “Mercury” to disgruntled fans, or at least one.

After a little pre-release hype, Bloc Party let another electro-inspired single on Zane Lowe’s radio show. “Mercury,” much like “Flux” hints to a massive electronic shift in the band’s upcoming, third album. I think Mr. Frank is spot on when he wrote:

Techno has made quite a resurgence in popularity over the last couple years with the likes of Justice and SMD gaining considerable notoriety from the press and fans alike. It’s kind of a turn off though when a talented British rock band like Bloc Party begins to eschew the natural direction of their music in order to cater to the everchanging trends of the music industry. A move which is usually followed by departure of their core audience, the ones that loved them for their first couple albums, which I thought were both excellent (Silent Alarm more so than Weekend In The City).

Maybe this song leaves more than one fan feeling a bit “disgruntled.” Download the song below, along with some key info about ‘Mercury’’s Aug. 11 release.
