Best Album of 2004 Poll

Best Albums of 00 | 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08 | 09

We’re finally closing the first half of the decade. So far, we’ve had to make some obvious, almost obligatory choices… as well as some that you may not have expected. Either way, Jeff and I are still relying on your votes and comments, and we thank you for sticking with us this long.

2004 was a crazy year for music. So crazy that I had to take an extra day to finalize this list. There was Kanye West’s debut album, arguably my personal favorite hip hop album ever. Arcade Fire also brought their Funeral that year too (and as you might know, that has been my favorite album of the last 10 years). Brian Wilson chose to finally release his SMiLE, 37 years in the making. I won’t go on… but hopefully you get the point.

As always, I looked through various year-end lists published by some of our favorite publications. The shortlist was created by looking through year-end lists by the Villiage Voice’s Pazz & Jop Poll, Pitchfork, Tiny Mix Tapes, Drowned By Sound, Stylus and PopMatters.

A. Kanye West: The College Dropout
B. Arcade Fire: Funeral
C. Animal Collective: Sung Tongs
D. Brian Wilson: SMiLE
E. Madvillian: Madvilliany
F. Franz Ferdinand: Franz Ferdinand
G. The Streets: A Grand Don’t Come For Free
H. Elliott Smith: From A Basement On The Hill
I. Modest Mouse: Good News For People Who Love Bad News
J. TV On The Radio: Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes

Best Albums of the 2000s: 2000

It’s not easy to pick the best album of a particular year. Music is the soundtrack to our lives, and it means different things to individuals depending on where they’re at when an album is released. Over the next few months I’m gonna tell you what albums we liked each year over the past ten years and I’ll also talk about your collective choice for best album each year. Anytime you narrow down entire years music down to 10 choices, you’re gonna miss some great music, and I know some of you think these types of articles are a waste of time. To you I say this:

  • Get over it. It’s my time I’m wasting. If you don’t wanna waste your time, don’t read. :)
  • PMA will still cover the latest music as it comes out, so you’re not missing anything there.
  • We see value in remembering great music from the past. Some of our readers may have missed these albums the first time around, so it’s still exposure to new music, even if it’s from 10 years ago.

I hope you enjoy this segment while it lasts, and get into the dialogue. We’ll probably nail some of your favorites and dreadfully miss others. Let us know what you think of the choices in the comments, and tell us what changes you’d make.

In the meantime, here are the winners for The Best Album of 2000. Enjoy! Continue reading →

Best Albums of 2000 Poll

As you know, I like lists. All kinds of lists. But my favorite are musically inclined lists. The end of the decade is approaching rather quickly, and with lists on my mind, I’ve been thinking about something I think a you all ought to be thinking about. The best albums of the 2000s. What were the first great albums of this millennium? Jeff Lind is down for the task of finding out. But he won’t do it alone.

From now up until late December, we will try to figure out what have been the best albums of the 00s, by year. This will amount to a total of 10 albums, one from each year, to keep things even. This is how it will work — for each year, Jeff and I will pick one album as our favorite, but we will also hold a poll for you all to vote on to find the PMA Readers’ choice for best album. Hopefully we will decide on two distinct albums to remember that given year.

We will be starting off with the year 2000. I have drawn up a list of 10 albums released in the year 2000 (in the US). This list was derived from various year-end lists from publications like: Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll, Pitchfork, Mojo and Metacritic. Please select the album you think was the best in 2000. If your choice isn’t on here, we’d love to see it in the comments section (though, we’d appreciate if you’d vote for your favorite on the list anyway).

A. OutKast – Stankonia
B. Radiohead – Kid A
C. Modest Mouse – The Moon And Antarctica
D. Yo La Tengo – And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
E. Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP
F. PJ Harvey – Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea
G. The New Pornographers – Mass Romantic
H. Primal Scream – XTRMNTR
I. Aimee Mann – Bachelor No. 2
J. Sleater-Kinney – All Hands On The Bad One

Modest Mouse – Satillite Skin

Modest Mouse Satillite Skin listen
Satellite Skin’s got this country feel – but not really. It sounds like a desert plain and a wide sky, and it sounds like Modest Mouse too – but unlike most Modest Mouse songs, it doesn’t sound pissed off. It lacks the sheer punch of jams like “Dashboard” or “Ocean Breathes Salty,” maybe just because it is less angry. The twangy guitar and delicate piano make me think sunset out west, but Isaac Brock’s snarl and Johnny Marr’s solos make me think late-night back east. Give “Satillite Skin” a listen. Modest Mouse – Satellite Skin

[rating:48/100]
“Meh” was added to the dictionary this year, meaning “mediocre” or “boring.” I tend to use this word a lot when I review things, so I figured that I should fully define the term at some point. And Modest Mouse’s latest, “Satellite Skin,” gives me the perfect opportunity. Continue reading →

RIP Indie Rock

RIP Indie Rock feature

Okay, sure, you like independent music. Fine. But what exactly does that mean? When you hear talk of independent music, what bands come to mind? Seriously, think about it. I’ve debated the term “indie” with friends, over-analyzed it with strangers, and completely dismantled it in heated arguments with just about anybody. Everyone I talk to has a different perception of what exactly indie music truly is. I remember having this conversation with a friend in the late 90’s and thinking that we’d nailed it down. Unfortunately, 10-ish years later, here I find myself reading Facebook walls and wondering what people really mean when they say they like “independent music.” Typically, the conversation rolls around to a few different locations but, generally, arguments about “what is indie” can be reduced to two basic tenets: 1) The label the band is on. 2) The style of music, or sound, that the band makes. I argue that neither of these make sense anymore, and that the term “indie,” as commonly used now, should be retired. Should be considered dead. Why? Well, this is why… Continue reading →

When Did Modest Mouse Cover The Killers?

The Killers

I guess I’m getting rusty… I was cruising around the Hype Machine looking for some tunes when I found an excellent cover of The Killers’ “Somebody Told Me” by everyones favorite drunken band Modest Mouse. The only blog that the Hype Machine has record of ever posting this cover is Berkeley’s Place — a blog I’ve been known to download some fantastic covers from. So I guess you can say this is a pretty rare cover.

It was first posted in April of 2007, with absolutely no information on the cover at all. Oh well.

Modest Mouse – Somebody Told Me (The Killers cover)

UPDATE: Yeah, ok… tactless, I just thought it was pretty fantastic.

Mail Call #2 (Music Videos Rule?)

Here’s this Friday’s Mail Call. I will basically bunch up a lot of cool links that have made their way to my inbox every Wednesday and Friday. Email me here and find your link up, unless its complete trash.

I was surprised to find so many music video links in my inbox this morning. Get ready for some Youtube love.

First off the list, Popeater lets PMA know about Fergie’s new video for “Clumsy”

WHY YOU SHOULD WATCH: In this ultimate pop-up book video, Fergie’s falling in love (and falling all over herself) under the watchful gaze of model Alex Lundquist … but who can blame her?

Reader Jenny Henson gushes about her love for Hard-Fi’s new video for “Cant Get Along (Without You)” and bandmember Richie calling him “fit and lush”… alright.
