There has been so much said about this album. To get this right took a while; many listens and much contemplation.

Most feel that Muse is an entity not to be ignored or hastily scrutinized. Everyone acknowledges that they managed to carve a size-able niche for themselves in the collective consciousness of millions of fans around the globe, despite the fact that they seem to have been virtually ignored here in America. And, much like Kings Of Leon’s recent successful release Only By the Night, Muse’s intentions with their latest album, The Resistance, might be intended to permanently inject themselves into the American pop culture stream. It’s very hard to believe that not many of my fellow countrymen are aware of this band or their catalogue of inspired rock anthems. To recall them only for a song on the Twilight Soundtrack (”Supermassive Black Hole”) is utter insanity after five full length albums, numerous accolades, and hundreds of sold-out, wildly entertaining hi-calibre live shows. And yet, it seems as if teenagers in the Stephanie Meyers’ Age of Popularity by Vampire Association are among that clueless bunch. Continue reading →

Muse – Resistance / Undisclosed Desires

Muse Resistance / Undisclosed Desires listen

Opening with ambient sounds, quickly transforming into rolling drums, the titular track to Muse’s Resistance, hits its stride with a sing-along chorus, “it could be wrong, could be wrong.” You might even say that “Resistance” is 2009’s “Starlight.”

This might be a premature summation on my part, but having listened to Muse’s Resistance once through, I can say that “Resistance” (the song) gives you the general feel of the album. So it might be a good idea for you to listen to it: Continue reading →

Muse – Uprising

Muse Uprising listen
Muse is officially back with their upcoming album The Resistance and its first single, “Uprising.” About a week ago, the band leaked “United States of Eurasia / Collateral Damage” to mixed feelings on my part. “Uprising” does very little to help set these feelings straight.

“Uprising” tries less to imitate Freddie Mercury, and focuses on delivering a synth-laden, irrefutably danceable anthem The Killers would be jealous of. For better or for worse, “Uprising” is typical Muse nosh — conspiracy, big government, Orwellian fan fare. Stylistically, “Uprising” is reminiscent of my favorite Muse track, “Time Is Running Out” — for better, without a doubt.

Catch Muse performing “Uprising” at this year’s MTV VMAs in September. Buy The Resistance September 14th. Listen to “Uprising” here. Continue reading →

Muse – United States of Eurasia / Collateral Damage

Muse United States of Eurasia / Collateral Damage listen
I’ve put off listening to this new Muse song, “United States of Eurasia” for a couple of reasons: one, I adore Muse. Really love ‘em. I love them so much that, I am scared of change. Change, I understand, is necessary in music — but nonetheless, I am scared. Two, there have been countless comparisons between Muse and Queen on “United States of Eurasia.” This is, as you know, both worrisome and exciting.

Normally, such comparisons are a great honor (no, actually, I’m sure Muse is thrilled; who doesn’t look up to Queen?), but at times, what should have been a subtle nod or tribute to a great band can easily become demanding and incongruous.

Listening to “United States of Eurasia,” I hear a front man who is worthy of being compared to the late, great Freddie Mercury. Being one of my personal heroes, I don’t say this often. In fact, I have only said this about two other persons, Killers front man, Brandon Flowers and American Idol finalist Adam Lambert (supposedly, Queen are thinking about having Lambert be their new leader singer… he’s got some pipes!). And Muse’s Matthew Bellamy seems like a better fit. Continue reading →

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 6

Gossip Girl beats 90210 once again and I’m quickly running out of reasons to keep this thing going.

Gossip Girl has displayed a menagerie of great music in the past — however, New Haven Can Wait’s musical playlist feels a little dull. One beautiful gem almost smothered by the selection of lackluster songs, is the Section Quartet’s arrangement of my favorite Muse song, “Time Is Running Out.”

This song alone is worth voting for Gossip Girl.

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 6 listen

Gossip Girl – New Haven Can Wait (aired 10-13-2008 to 3.34 million viewers)
The Submarines – The Wake Up Song
The Friendly Fires – White Diamonds
The Duke Spirit – Wooden Heart
The Section Quartet – Time Is Running Out [if you have the mp3 PLEASE share. I want this so bad]
(Muse – Time Is Running Out)
Jamie Blake – Dragstrip Girl (who? what? where? sorry, I could not find an mp3 to share)

90210 has always done great with mixing up the Top 40 sounds (P!nk) while still keeping its indie-cred. 90210 has also pushed a couple of artists I’ve never listed to before (Senor Happy, Natalie Walker). A well rounded list, as per usual. Maybe this time, 90210′ comprehensiveness is enough to overthrow Gossip Girl’s undying charisma.

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 6 listen

90210 – Model Behavior (aired 09-30-2008 to 4.9 million viewers)
N.E.R.D. – Windows
Mates of State – Now
P!nk – So What
CSS – Reggae All Night
Senor Happy – Got You
Keane – Spiraling
Jem -Got It Good
Natalie Walker – With You

Cover Tuesday 19

Cover Tuesday 15: is Back! Best Covers of Summer 2008 covers
Unless you can pull an awesome cover off!

Moby – Creep (Radiohead cover): Last week I asked for a good “Creep” cover, and many of you came through! Moby’s cover of “Creep” was by far, my favorite. Another contender was Prince’s cover. Being there in the flesh to witness Prince cover Radiohead was just amazing — no mp3 rip can compare.

Ryan Adams – Wonderwall (Oasis cover): This is pretty fantastic, especially since I’m going to see Ryan Adams and the Cardinals open for Oasis later next month. I’ve been debating whether or not this cover is actually better than the original. Can a 90’s megajam that’s as cult-worthy as “Wonderwall” really be trumped by the likes of Ryan Adams?

The Kooks – Young Folks (Peter, Bjorn and John cover): Ok this is definitely my favorite cover of the week. The Kooks are a responsible for some remarkable covers. Remember them doing MGMT’s “Kids” or Coldplay’s “Violet Hill”? How can you forget.

Goldfrapp – It’s Not Over Yet (Klaxons cover): Goldfrapp is one of my favorite female vocalists of all time — can her voice get anymore perfect? I got some backlash last time I used this one, but hey, lemme give it another go: File this under the “better than the original” category.

Muse – Feeling Good (Nina Simone cover): The last time I heard a good Nina Simone cover was when the Arctic Monkeys did “Diamonds Are Forever” at Glastonbury. Can the Arctic Monkeys compare with the raw engergy of Matt Bellamy and his Muse? No, of course not, that’s crazy talk.

New The Streets – Everything Is Borrowed

The Streets
The Streets’ Mike Skinner has just uploaded the title track to Everything Is Borrowed to his myspace page, and its pretty fantastic — though the quality isn’t superb.

“Everything Is Borrowed” is certainly an essential 2008 song. If my hunch is correct, we might be nodding to an even greater quintessential Streets’ tune. Listen to it below (thanks to Punkreas), and take a peek at Skinners’ magnificent collaboration with the magical Muse.

New Muse and The Streets – Who Knows Who

Muse

A new Muse and Streets track leaked this morning. Apparently the track is not to be taken seriously and will not be released on either act’s new albums. This is a statement Muse released in respect to the track leak:

The MP3 floating around on the message boards at the moment is a track we recorded with Mike Skinner a few months ago. The track was the result of a late night jam session and something we did for a bit of a laugh featuring a blues riff we have been playing live recently upon which Skinner recorded some vocals. It is not intended to be a serious release so we are happy for it to be leaked around unofficially. Hope you enjoy, Cheers. Matt, Dom & Chris.

Well Muse, I did enjoy it. Download it below
