New Neon Indian “Sleep Paralysist”

New Neon Indian Sleep Paralysist mp3

“Sleep Paralysist” is the latest free single to sprout up out of the Green Label Sound vaults. In the passed, they’ve released new, free tracks from Matt & Kim, The Cool Kids, Chromeo and Theophilus London. Today, Neon Indian graces the front page of the label’s website. “Sleep Paralysist” was co-produced by Neon Indian’s Alan Palomo and Grizzly Bear’s Chris Taylor. I can already hear the distorted chillgaze/glo-fi synths on Grizzly Bear’s Veckatimest follow-up, can you?

Calling this “This Week’s Touring News” makes little sense since it’s been a while since we’ve talked about new tour dates, but let’s keep everything simple and uniform, shall we? Read on for new tour dates for Wilco, Kid Cudi, Yeasayer, Miike Snow, Neon Indian, The Antlers (with the Editors), The Big Pink (with A Place To Bury Strangers), Mos Def (with DOOM), Dan Black and Girl Talk. Dream Cop – Basement Tapes

Dream Cop Basement Tapes mp3

Dream Cop is Tommy Davidson, the latest tape musician to find himself on my radar. While we haven’t been crazy about listening to this type of stuff for prolonged periods of time (read: Neon Indian, Washed Out), we do enjoy a warm, fuzzy track (read: Neon Indian, Washed Out), and that is exactly what “Basement Tapes” is.

MP3: Dream Cop – Basement Tapes

Listen to the nearly-as-good “Warm Thrash” at Dream Cop’s Myspace page.

Grizzly Bear – Cheerleader (Neon Indian Remixes)

Grizzly Bear Cheerleader (Neon Indian Remixes) listenPhoto Courtesy of Force Field PR

Neon Indian, whose album perplexed us, has remixed Grizzly Bear’s “Cheerleader” — off the PMA-adored Veckatimest — not once, but twice. As expected, the remixes sound like Grizzly Bear through a psychedelic lo-fi filter. What wasn’t expected was how well Grizzly Bear wears this filter.

The first remix is called “Neon Indian ‘Sega Genesis P-Orridge’ Remix” and is a bit more up-beat than its sister-remix; the closest thing to a club banger you’ll ever hear from Neon Indian or Grizzly Bear. But things don’t kick into gear until the second remix starts playing, the “Neon Indian ‘Studio 6669′ Remix)”. It’s smoother and feels stronger than most of Neon Indian’s Psychic Chasms LP. Listen to the remixes below: Continue reading →

I’m pretty sure that if Neon Indian had come around ten or fifteen years ago, he would have been laughed at, dismissed as quickly as he has burst onto the scene. But here, in the context of this year’s bizarro lo-fi resurrection that we find ourselves living through, Neon Indian is a logical next step. It’s Passion Pit for the Gorilla vs. Bear crowd. What a strange turn of events.

Luckily, Alan Palomo, the man behind Neon Indian’s tunes, acknowledges his precarious position in the world of popular music. In an interview with Pitchfork, Palomo admitted, “I’d be lying if I said lo-fi was a completely gimmick-free genre. It’s an old trick to just cover songs in reverb and distortion– one I’ve been guilty of in the past.” He went on to later say that, “I do have some ambivalence towards lo-fi where it stands right now. There’s so much stuff coming out on blogs and I have this impending anxiety as to whether it’s going to become another electro disaster.” I’m right there with Palomo. We’re on the verge of lo-fi overload – perhaps half a year away from the type of backlash that surrounds bloghouse and autotune. Continue reading →

Neon Indian – 6669 (I Don’t Know If You Know)

Neon Indian – 6669 (I Don’t Know If You Know) listen
I’ve made note that the first time I blogged about Neon Indian, I mentioned that I was still “on the fence” with them. Consider me off that fence. It took me a while, but I’ve come to realize that Neon Indian are making some fantastic tunes.

This one in particular is quite nice. Staying true to the genre of Pitchfork-approved electronic music, or Pitchforkwavegaze/ConceptualBlogCore, “6669″ is atmospheric and light, hopping from one brain cell to the next.

Neon Indian’s debut LP hits stores October 13th. Listen to “6669″ now. Continue reading →

Neon Indian – Terminally Chill/Deadbeat Summer

Neon Indian Terminally Chill/Deadbeat Summer listen
Neon Indian, a mysterious electronic outfit a la Burial, The Golden Filter. Because I’m not a fan of secrets, I really didn’t bother with Neon Indian, but once I heard Alan Palomo (of VEGA fame) was behind all this, my interest was once again sparked. Palomo has collaborated with NYC video artist Alicia Scardetta to form the positively creative Neon Indian. Neon Indian’s debut full-length album, Psychic Chasms will hit shelves at your local record store on October 13th through Lefse Records.

Neon Indian and their “Terminally Chill” and “Deadbeat Summer” have been crafted specifically for fans of VEGA (who has been criminally ignored by PMA, by the way) or even for people looking for a decidedly less poppy Discovery. Listen to them here Continue reading →
