Janelle Monae Tightrope (feat. Big Boi) listen

I am excited to announced that “Tightrope” is the first single off Janelle Monae’s upcoming ’suites,’ the Metropolis Suites II & III: The ArchAndroid. In this outstanding collaboration with Outkast’s Big Boi, Janelle Monae draws strength from James Brown, Grace Jones and even Andre 3000. Listen to it below:

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

On Friday, February 12th, “Tightrope”, along with another The ArchAndroid track, “Cold War”, will go on sale exclusively at Janelle Monae’s website. It will be available everywhere on the 23rd of February.

Janelle Monae’s The ArchAndroid is the hotly anticipated and long awaited first release since Monae’s 2007’s Metropolis Suite I of IV: The Chase. According to her official blog, “The ArchAndroid” is an “EMOTION PICTURE” brought to you by Janelle Monáe and the Mad Minds of the Wondaland Arts Society. The star-studded featured cast includes the legendary Big Boi of OutKast, renowned poet Saul Williams, psychedelic dance-punk troupe Of Montreal, punk prophets Deep Cotton, and the Wondaland Arch Orchestra.

I can already tell you now that the of Montreal collaboration is going to be bananas. The ArchAndroid is out on May 18th. Read on for Janelle Monae’s tour dates: Continue reading →

2007 might just be my favorite year for music releases this decade. Unfortunately, many, many great albums were left out of this list. It was pretty hard leave them out, but I couldn’t press the little blue “Publish” button without any of the following albums on the list:

A. LCD Soundsystem – Sound of Silver
B. Radiohead – In Rainbows
C. Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
D. Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
E. M.I.A. – Kala
F. Panda Bear – Person Pitch

pmaCAST #17: True Blood

pmaCAST #17: True Blood mp3

DOWNLOAD: MP3 / iTUNES

pmaCAST #16, better known as the PMA Summer Playlist, was ridiculously long and overwhelmingly popular. It was 120mb of summer fun and was downloaded over 4400 times so far, making it the most downloaded episode of the pmaCAST. This 17th episode of the podcast is an extension to the Summer Playlist, in honor of the Senate passing the $2 Billion Extension for the “Cash For Clunkers” Program. Ok, that’s not true. But please get your hunk of junk off our roads. :)

Anyway, this new podcast was somewhat inspired by a True Blood season 1 marathon and is made up of a mix of current and old favorites. Hopefully you’ll discover or rediscover something here.

Stereogum & team9 Present… MySplice III

Stereogum & team9 Present... MySplice III mp3

Stereogum and team9 have teamed up for a third year in a row to bring us their MySplice III mashup compilation. The mix includes 2008 blog staples like Bloc Party, Lykke Le, of Montreal, Beck, and Crystal Castles mashed with 2008’s ineluctable pop hits (Britney Spears, Rihanna, Kanye, Katy Perry). Oh, and they through in some oldies as well (Cyndi Lauper, Guns N’ Roses, etc).

I don’t know if you guys feel it too, but I can’t help but think this is the best MySplice yet.

Stream the whole thing here, and download the mp3s below the player.

SPIN.com’s Top 25 MGMT Remixes

SPIN.com chooses its Top 25 MGMT Remixes. I like them:

  • “All My Children” (MGMT vs. LCD Soundsystem), Immuzikation
Immuzikation, a.ka. Athens, Georgia’s Alfredo P. Lapuz, Jr., is the mash-up man of the moment, and this extended massaging of LCD’s “All My Friends” (basically a mash-up of Steve Reich and New Order, anyway) with MGMT’s “Kids” is a fascinating mix of aging hipster regret and childlike hipster nostalgia. The soundtrack to a changing of the guard? (DOWNLOAD MP3)
  • “Nasty Feel,” MGMT vs. Justice vs. Notorious B.I.G.
Brooklyn duo ddpesh modestly describe their music as “Daft Punk plus Premier’s beats divided by the Chemical Brothers” (um, good luck with that, fellas). But this hilariously ingenious mash-up of Biggie’s “Nasty Boy” with Justice’s remix of MGMT’s white-soul wafer “Electric Feel” gets a damn sight closer than anything they’ve ever done before. Never thought I’d hear Frank White “freekin’ these bitches like Jodeci” over the hackey-sack slow jam of the year. (DOWNLOAD MP3)
  • “Kids” (We Don’t Care EP version), MGMT
The original, cheaply made version sounds like actual guileless kids stumbling into magic — the singing’s less affected, the drama less studio-enhanced, and when the vocals kick in after the electro breakdown and sound of children playing with about minute left to go, you honestly stop caring for a second what the hell they mean by a family of trees wanting to be haunted! Cover Tuesday 17: Of Montreal & MGMT – Smeels Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana Cover)

Cover Tuesday 16 covers
Unless you can pull an awesome cover off!

Time for your weekly dose of covers. This week I have nice bunch of covers for you from Of Montreal and MGMT, Natasha Bedingfield, Mates of State, and the Cure.

Of Montreal & MGMT – Smeels Like Teen Spirit (Nirvana cover): This cover is only 4 days old, definitely the baby of this week’s batch. While on tour the unstoppable force that is Of Montreal and MGMT took a big risk and covered the most influential and beloved song of the 1990’s. When Kurt Cobain and co. first invisioned this song — I bet it sounded a lot like this in his head.

Natasha Bedingfield – Ray Of Light (Madonna cover): British songbird, Natasha Beddingfield recorded this cover for Radio 1’s 40th Anniversary compilation. I gotta say, she did a wonderful job singing this song. Ask any singer, or her Royal Mageness herself, “Ray of Light” is one tough song to sing. Thankfully, Natasha Bedingfield’s vocal range is incredible and suitable worth of “Ray of Light.” Very impressed.

Of Montreal – Crazy (Gnrals Barkley cover): Here’s another Of Montreal cover. They are quickly becoming my favorite cover band. This Gnarls Barkley cover is exquisite.

Mates Of State – California (Phantom Planet cover): This is such a great cover to an iconic song.

The Cure – Love Will Tear Us Apart (Joy Division cover): One of the many, many “Love WIll Tear Us Apart” covers, an done of the best.

Download these covers after the jump! Continue reading →
