Max Tundra, nee Ben Jacobs, is a very nice person, I’m sure, and his song, the Laurel & Hardy-esque titled “Which Song,” is a perfectly nice song, and Passion Pit’s remix is full of the lo-fi, uplifting beats and synth-sounds that made Manners so much fun. Still, it’s not a good sign when the main characteristic of a song is that it is “nice.”
I want to tell “Which Song” that I like it too much to ever be romantic with it. “Which Song” is in the musical friend zone. Jacobs’ vocals just don’t ever challenge the listener or command your attention the way, well, Passion Pit’s Michael Angelakos’ do. More whiny than plaintive, when Jacobs sings about a girl leaving him for another man, well, I kind of understand.
Worth checking out if you like Passion Pit, but you’re much better off just re-listening to “Sleepyhead” or “Little Secrets” to get your falsetto fix. Download it below: Continue reading →
“The Swelly Express” is the true story of two college kids (Chidera Anamege and Xaphoon Jones) from Philly who rocked some parties at Drexel and quickly gained the attention of “the industry”. The music and lyrics were inspired by many boring trips on the Chinatown bus (they have wifi now!) on the way to meet “big wigs” in NYC. After a bunch of nice dinners and some free drinks for these 2 underage kids, Chiddy Bang decided to make a mixtape. PMA is proud to present this mixtape with OnSMASH and Crooks & Castles.

I watched Gigantic for the first time tonight. It was an odd movie, for sure, but I was delighted to see the movie’s last few seconds scored by Animal Collective’s “Did You See The Words?”
It was the perfect odd-ball song to close an odd-ball film. What was better yet was the music binge I went on right after the credits closed. These songs are what make up this twentieth episode of the pmaCAST. Hopefully you’ll find the track list fitting of this milestone episode.

Last week I posted Ellie Goulding’s official debut single, “Under The Sheets,” set to be released by Neon Gold. Here are a couple of covers she recorded before getting picked up by Neon Gold. Let me just say that this is a legit way to get attention. Something you working-on-it musicians ought to take note of. It could just be that I like covers, or that I’ve seen it happen many times before. But that’s just my two cents.
From what I gathered, Ellie Goulding has covered Passion Pit’s “Sleepyhead,” Sam Sparro’s “Black and Gold” and Bon Iver’s “The Wolves (Act I and II).” The song selection itself speaks volumes about Ellie Goulding, not only as a musician, but also as a music fan. And I’m delighted to say that Ellie Goulding sounds just as comfortable covering one of her electro-pop peers as she sounds covering a cabin-dwelling Northwestern Wisconsinite, lo-fi layered vocals and all. Gossip Girl’s music selection for its third season is finally getting interesting. Last night’s star-studded episode (insert: read NY Mag’s hilarious and inspired GG recaps every Tuesday morning), was the season’s most interesting, musically and otherwise.
As always, Gossip Girl played a handful of tracks by small bands you probably never heard of, but Alex Pastavas always keeps a goodie for the Gossip Girl’s closing monologue (which was awfully good last night).
Last week they closed with Miike Snow’s “Animal,” in a cutesy scene, and but this week they turned to Passion Pit’s “Moth’s Wings” in a plot-relevant scene. I’m more impressed by Pastavas’ decision to license “Moth’s Wings” (over other delectable Passion Pit cuts like “Little Secrets” or “The Reeling”) than the actual use of the track. We knew Xaphoon Jones first as the producer and the sampling mastermind behind the quickly rising Chiddy Bang. Chiddy Bang owe most of the publicity they get to the tight, slick samples this guy has crafted for them. Like a musical pickpocket, Xaphoon Jones showed us that he has an ear for contemporary music and making it work in unconventional environments. With his debut eponymous mixtape, Xaphoon pushes passed the boundaries we thought he had and dips into soulful Motown favorites, East Coast Rap, and Reggae.
