pmaCAST #21: Looking Better, Shining Brighter Than You Do

pmaCAST #21: Looking Better, Shining Brighter Than You Do musicThe twenty-first episode of the pmaCAST is here. The new episode runs a little bit over an hour and fifteen minutes and features some of my favorite songs of the moment. I’m pretty confident that you all will like this one.

There are two ways I want you guys to get the pmaCAST: the easiest way is to subscribe to the podcast via iTunes, for free of course. Every time I upload a new episode onto iTunes, it will automatically download onto your computer. The version of the episodes found on iTunes are enhanced with chapters (you can skip to whichever song you want), if you have an iPod or iPhone.

For those iTunes-impaired people out there, you can still download the .mp3 version of this podcast by clicking here. Read on for the tracklist of this episode. Continue reading →

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009 (.25 of the way through)

Today is the 91st day of 2009, or (almost) exactly one quarter of the way through 2009. Is it too soon to start thinking of “Best Songs” honors? I don’t think so!

Before I get into the list, I want to set up some ground rules: The only songs eligible are songs that were released as singles in 2009 (Jan 1st – March 31st, in this case). This will really limit this initial list, as some of my favorite songs of the year have been non-single album tracks, like “Summertime Clothes” by Animal Collective, or “Dull Life” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Well, actually, I think that’s the only rule.

Let’s get on to the list, shall we? Continue reading →

Peter Bjorn and John – Living Thing Album Review

Peter Bjorn and John Living Thing Album Review album reviews reviews 2

[rating:72/100]

“Do this thing this type of thing, put a little money in this type of thing, we’ve got nothing to worry about. I got nothing to worry about.” From the opening high-pitched children’s choir shriek of “Nothing To Worry About,” Peter Bjorn and John had me hooked. Just three years after releasing one of 2006’s most addictive songs, the Swedish boys had done it again with another phenomenal single. “Nothing To Worry About” bubbles over with infectious joy and fun, and it bubbled the indie rock world with excitement for their upcoming album.

The second single off of Living Thing piqued interest as well. “Lay It Down” begins with lead singer Peter Moren singing jublilantly: “Hey, shut the fuck up boy, you are starting to piss me off!” And in kicks in the choir once more (probably not children this time), singing a spectacular dirty ditty about telling someone to cut it out. Needless to say, these two singles got me extremely excited for Living Thing. Continue reading →

Peter Bjorn and John – Living Thing

[rating:82/100]

Peter Bjorn and John Living Thing listenWith the titular track off of their upcoming album, Living Thing, Peter Bjorn and John follow Vampire Weekend’s path towards the resurgence of Afro-Pop. Loose, lovely guitars chirp in when they please in the background, and random boings poke  into the song as well. “It’s a living thing, it’s a terrible thing to lose,” Moren sings throughout the bouncy tune that maintains the best aspects of the band’s music- fun, uplifting melodies and catchy hooks. When Moren breaks into his “ooo,” and runs with the song’s melody towards the end, it’s simply a magical moment. Continue reading →

New Peter Bjorn & John / Animal Collective Dave Wrangler Remixes

New Peter Bjorn & John / Animal Collective Dave Wrangler Remixes listen

I put Dave Wrangler’s remix of “My Girls” up a few days ago, but I stupidly deleted it (I brainfart too, sometimes), so right when I was going to repost it, Mr. Wrangler sent over this PB&J  mashup/remix and here we are.

A lot of people dug that new Peter, Bjorn & John track that Kanye West leaked a few days ago (”Nothing To Worry About”), and now good ole Dave Wrangler has done an exquisite job of mashing and mixing it up with none other than B.I.G. I’m not a fan of Mr. Biggie, but this somehow works just fine. More than fine, even.

But the new PB&J remix has nothing on his fantastic Animal Collective remix. “My Girls,” as I’ve said before, is my favorite track off Merriweather Post Pavilion, and I’m glad the remixes I’ve heard so far are doing it justice.

Catch both remixes after the jump Continue reading →
