It takes a minute to understand how to judge this kind of music. Samples, mixes and mashes, soft, barely there vocals entrenched in noise and layered beneath sounds borrowed from what was thought to be obscurity. What turned out to be merely buried underground and revered with certain concessions about its ultimate artistic validity. Everyone has an influence. Everyone has an inspiration. Nothing is ever original, as is said. Art travels in circles, reconstituting itself through the eyes, ears, and hands of another. There are tweaks and adjustments; an infusing of times, talents and ideas. But underlying, the foundations laid down by others are always to be found. Travis Egedy brings us an example of this kind of circular art with Dark Rift, his current LP under the title of Pictureplane. Quite a few people seem to be taken with this offering of generally relentless and spirited electronica. It’s simple and uncluttered. Each track free flows into the other, the connective tissue apparent in Egedy’s methods of mixing. Pictureplane – Boys In Blush / Gang Signs

Pictureplane Boys In Blush / Gang Signs listen
Pictureplane is making Denver all kinds of awesome. His real name is Travis Egedy, and I think that’s pretty cool. Pictureplane’s debut album Dark Rift came out on August 4th on Lovepump United Records. Buy it because it’s immense. I’ve blogged about Pictureplane before.

Pictureplane – Goth Star

Pictureplane Goth Star listen
Denver’s Pictureplane caught me by surprise.

Back in late 2007, a track called “Flashion (You Designed My Mind)” hit the net. I didn’t pay much attention to it, though I did find it enjoyable. After that, I completely forgot about Pictureplane, that is, until I saw Pitchfork’s track review for “Goth Star.”

“Goth Star,” an early cut from Pictureplane’s debut record Dark Rift, samples the eternal Fleetwood Mac (”Steven Wonders”), though you would be pressed to know it at first. Though the vocal sample is completely tweaked-out and unrecognizable, the massive, shimmering, ferocious mess surrounding it keeps the track mind-bending and blood-tingling.
