Hmmm…Pitchfork Gives U2 A 4.2

Hmmm...Pitchfork Gives U2 A 4.2 music

Not quite sure what to make of this one.I’m surprised P4K didn’t give them a U.2.

Their critic Ryan Dombal calls No Line On The Horizon a “a defensive gesture, and a rather pitiful one at that.”

U2 has been getting both a lot of love and, well, a lot of more love lately.

What do you guys think? Have you heard No Line On The Horizon yet (if not, it’s streaming on U2’s MySpace)? Does it deserve praise or criticism?

PMA’s review will be up very shortly, probably early in this week.

Oh Yes They Did! Pitchfork Gives Incredibad a 7.7

Oh Yes They Did! Pitchfork Gives Incredibad a 7.7 interesting reads

Awesome!

Just a day after many of us were very angered with Pitchfork, the site goes and redeems itself by giving Andy Samberg and The Lonely Island’s album some much-deserved respect. Jessica Suarez gave the album a great review (although she bashed “Sax Man,” which I loved). Here’s her final, well-written paragraph:

“The Lonely Island understand repetition and exaggeration. On SNL, that was most apparent in their “Dear Sister” sketch, its melodramatic, “O.C.”-savaging death scene iterations getting funnier and funnier. On Incredibad it’s the “boiled goose” line on “Boombox”, the endlessly repeated chorus of “I’m on a boat!” from “I’m on a Boat”. Basic comedy stuff, sure, but the guys also have a good sense of when to quit (see also the “cool beans” segment in “Hot Rod”). Maybe it’s that same sense of rhythm that guides their songwriting. Maybe that makes this comedy music, instead of musical comedy, because it’s hard to tell which one’s modifying the other. Still, good timing’s good timing.”

You pleased with Pitchfork’s Incredibad analysis?

Oh No They Didn’t! Pitchfork gives N.A.S.A. a 1.6

Oh No They Didnt! Pitchfork gives N.A.S.A. a 1.6 interesting reads

Come on, Pitchfork. As Seth Myers would say, really?

Debate N.A.S.A.’s debut album, The Spirit of Apollo, all you want, but not even the harshest critics would go as low as a 1.6 for this PMA fave. To me, this is just another “statement review” that Pitchfork feels the need to make due to N.A.S.A.’s extremely positive buzz. But that’s just my opinion- maybe writer Tom Breihan just really hated the album. Give your thoughts on Pitchfork’s review in the comments. Click on for Tom Breihan’s harsh final paragraph. New Animal Collective Album = Album of the Year?, Two New Morrissey Songs

New Animal Collective Album = Album of the Year?, Two New Morrissey Songs listen

So Morrissey’s new album Years of Refusal has leaked. I’m not really all that impressed, but I did really like a couple of songs:

Morrissey – It’s Not Your Birthday Anymore

Morrissey – I’m OK By Myself

Now, will Animal Collective’s Merriweather Post Pavilion be the album to beat in 2009?

The Thinking Man’s Take On: Pitchfork Media

The Thinking Mans Take On: Pitchfork Media feature

There has been a lot said, both positive and negative, about the influence of PitchforkMedia.com on music. Pitchfork proponents hail it as a one-stop-shop for trustworthy opinions on music that don’t pander to the masses. A brain-trust of witty, insightful writers combine to make a whole lot of music available to the masses. A favorable review from the King of Hipster Media can vault an unknown band into the spotlight (see: Broken Social Scene, Arcade Fire, Titus Andronicus), giving opportunities to bands without huge advertising budgets, savvy managers, or more than a few great tracks. Pitchfork wades through the crap so you don’t have to, finding the diamonds in the roughest of the rough. Through good writing and exhaustive coverage, Pitchfork has metamorphosed from a twinkle in Ryan Schreiber’s eye into the biggest website in indie music, getting almost a quarter of a million hits per day.

The detractors are eager to contest, however, and they have some good ground to stand on. Pitchfork relies on individual reviewers, they argue, whose opinion often carries a gargantuan weight. A dismissal from the ‘fork means months of writing and recording practically down the drain, hindering careers just as often (or more) than it helps those small-time artists. Equally, Pitchfork lives to create buzz, latching onto the newest trend in indie music to bring it to the forefront. When Justin Timberlake came out with FutureSex/Lovesounds in 2006, Pitchfork hyped it up and it was all of a sudden cool to like pop again. In 2007, Feist and Regina Spektor got good reviews and it was suddenly the Year of the Female Vocalist. Fleet Foxes and Beach House hit in 2008, and lo-fi choral groups were back in style. And Pitchfork was there through it all. Critics are quick to point out that being in Pitchfork’s buzz-genre of the moment is a definite point (literally, 1 point out of ten sometimes) in your favor.

In perhaps the best overall summary of Pitchfork, the band The Airborne Toxic Event took umbrage with the site’s review in the form of a public letter. Citing their own respect – nay, love – for Pitchfork, they also say, “We love indie rock and we know full well that Pitchfork doesn’t so much critique bands as critique a band’s ability to match a certain indie rock aesthetic.” While that is certainly a simplification, it’s a viewpoint that isn’t rare.

But I’m getting side-tracked. I didn’t come here to discuss whether Pitchfork is Good, Bad, or Indifferent – the answer to all of those is a resounding “Maybe”. Instead, I wanted to share a realization I had.

Pitchfork Media is the Google of music.
