The Ting Tings – That’s Not My Name (RAC Remix), PMA Premiere

The Ting Tings Thats Not My Name (RAC Remix), PMA Premiere mp3

It’s no secret that my ears have a major crush on RAC’s remixes. This is PMA’s 13th post on André Allen Anjos’s Remix Artist Collective, so I figured it should be something special. Over the last few months, Andre and I have become GTalk buddies and he has shared a few remixes with me, and for record label-related reasons, I’m not allowed to share most of them. This Ting Tings remix, I’ve had since late May, and I am just now getting clearance to share it with everyone else.

This remix of “That’s Not My Name” is coming just in time for the single’s resurgence in the US, but for the rest of the radio-boycotting population, this remix will give us a fresh new way to look at a 2008 favorite.

Learnalilgivinanlovin’

Learnalilgivinanlovin listen
Gotye. I’ve been urged to blog about Wally De Backer’s music for a while now. Don’t you dare ask me why I haven’t. Maybe I thought you weren’t ready for this? Maybe I simply kept forgetting to?  Well whatever the reason, Gotye’s music has remained, for the most part, a nicely kept secret. Last year, this tune, “Learnalilgivinanlovin’” was released in various parts of the world, but garnered very little exposure for the young Australian artist.

Luckily, Backer will receive his very first US release with a 7″ single for “Learnalilgivinanlovin’.” It will be backed by a remixed by Passion Pit. Hopefully that will certainly entice people to go out and listen to Gotye. It will be released via Neon Gold on August 17th. It only costs $5. Buy it here.

Gotye – Learnalilgivinanlovin’
from Learnalilgivinanlovin’ 7″ (2009)

Bonus: Gotye – Heart’s A Mess
from Like Drawing Blood (2006)

and the rest of the songs (Au Revoir Simone, The Big Pink, et la) that kept me company on a lonely, scenic drive. Continue reading →

John Legend – Everybody Knows (RAC Remix)

John Legend Everybody Knows (RAC Remix) mp3
PMA favorite RAC is back with a remix of John Legend’s latest single, “Everybody Knows.” John Legend is no stranger to singing over an electronic beat. He recently lent his voice to MSTRKRFT’s latest single, “Heartbreaker.” Both “Heartbreaker” and RAC’s remix feature a piano loop that will catch you instantly, but the latter definitely has more longevity.

What makes RAC’s remix of “Everyone Knows” better is the subtlety of the instrumentation. There is a certain delicacy in Legend’s voice and MSTRKRFT’s production overpowers it in the most unflattering way. It seems like AAA knows how to take care of a gift like that.

The original track is lead by a deep penetrating bass and a barely-there guitar that moves the song forward. Alone, “Everybody Knows” is top-class R&B single — but I can’t help but feel that RAC’s remix is strikingly better, while still keeping true to the aesthetic of a John Legend tune. Ramalama (Bang Bang)

Ramalama (Bang Bang) music
I have an uncharacteristically complicated relationship with the wonderful Roisin Murphy. I absolutely throw it down when one of her tracks comes on. She is everything I look for in a female vocalist with an electronic twang. However, I have never really cared of any of her releases or bothered to go out and purchase any of her albums until I find them in some clearance bin.

I’ve had a tumultuous few weeks with Roisin’s debut album, Ruby Blue. I have been going back and forth, sometimes enjoying it thoroughly and other times pushing it aside, annoyed. Nonetheless, the album’s titular track was included in the latest pmaCAST episode, and now I’m going back to another favorite, “Ramalama.” I was listening to it earlier today… and one thing led to another… and now I have this little mix on my hands. Under 50 w/ The Pains…, The Sounds, The Antlers, Dirty Projectors & Fools Gold

Under 50 w/ The Pains..., The Sounds, The Antlers, Dirty Projectors & Fools Gold listen

Just a note, the PMA Rating scale has been updated. Because it now extends to most tracks as well, you will be seeing big, bold, red ratings often and you should probably educate yourself and know what they mean. See the scale here. Thank you.

There is so much music out there and so little time to talk about it! So every time I feel there’s a build up of some songs I genuinely like that aren’t being represented here at PMA, I will do one of these bulk posts, limiting my comments on the song to 50 words. Think of this as an indescript playlist.

This time I’ll be focusing on songs by The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, The Sounds, The Antlers, Dirty Projectors, and Fools Gold Continue reading →

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Zero (RAC Remix)

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Zero (RAC Remix) listen
“Zero” is no stranger to the remix treatment. So far, it has been tampered with everyone from Animal Collective to MSTRKRFT to N.A.S.A. And now the always-fantastic RAC. I kind of wish they’d let “Zero” die down and pay more attention to the superior “Heads Will Roll” and –dare I say — “Dull Life.” But if I had to choose between any of the overwhelmingly dull “Zero” remixes, I would choose RAC’s remix. Nothing personal Animal Collective and MSTRKRFT, but your half-assed attempts of remixing this song were not appreciated.

Oh and fun (rumor?) fact: I hear that this remix will be appearing on an episode of Entourage soon. Congrats RAC. Catch the mp3 here. Continue reading →

Kings of Leon – Use Somebody (RAC Remix)

Kings of Leon Use Somebody (RAC Remix) mp3
“Use Somebody” has been getting some serious re-imagination action lately. I’m probably getting to the point where I’m going to start telling people not to fuck with this song. Though, I am having a terribly difficult time trying to tell Andre Anjos (aka RAC) that.

RAC has a great track record for his off-beat remixes. They aren’t the most dancefloor-friendly remixes around, but they are flawlessly consistent. RAC’s remix of Kings of Leon’s “Use Somebody” is no exception. Though my favorite is probably his “Just Dance” remix. I really didn’t see it coming.

Ra Ra Riot – Webster Hall, NYC, April 4 2009

Ra Ra Riot Webster Hall, NYC, April 4 2009 gig reviews
Wes Miles pulls at his clothes like he wants to say “Free me from this earthly prison!” He stares into nothing. He turns this way and that with lifts and presses of one boat-shoed foot. Wes Miles does not stand still, and the rest of his band does not stand still, and no one in this cavernous room stands still, and everything jitters electrically.

This is Ra Ra Riot’s biggest headlining show to date, and Wes nervously admits this between “Run My Mouth Off” and “Winter ’05,” halfway into the show as if he doesn’t want to jinx things. I have always believed that Ra Ra Riot deserve more attention and more love, and when year-end lists came out last December I looked nervously for The Rhumb Line (their only album) everywhere, for their name in the top-ten of best live band, for “Ghost Under Rocks” under best song, but I was disappointed to discover that not all people extend the kind of adoration to Ra Ra Riot that I do. This sold-out show appears to be a step in the right direction. Continue reading →

Robyn – Cobrastyle (RAC Remix)

Robyn Cobrastyle (RAC Remix) mp3

It’s been a while since we’ve heard anything from André Allen Anjos, also known as RAC or Remix Artist Collective. If I’m not mistaking, the last we’ve heard from him here on PMA, he had remixed Lady GaGa’s “Just Dance” (quite fantastically, too!) — that was in September. A RAC remix has been long, long overdue.

Here we have RAC transforming Robyn’s erratic “Cobrastyle” into a trimmed, mellow, kick-back mix with swagger to spare. Apparently this remix premiered on some FOX promo — oh and Anjos is telling me that Rick Ross is about to put some vocals on this mix. Weird, I thought his career was dead.

Anyway, Anjos also wants me to tell everyone that he’s been working on remixes for Kings of Leon, Ra Ra Riot, Mates of State, and others, and that we should get to hear them soon. But for now, listen to his remix of “Cobrastyle” — Continue reading →
