Kelley McRae – Highrises In Brooklyn

Kelley McRae Highrises In Brooklyn listen“Highrises In Brooklyn” is a nice coffeehouse lounger that will surely please those disappointed with Regina Spektor’s latest album- or at least fill the gap until her next. Up-and-comer Kelley McRae is one of those likable, smart pop-folksters who is easy on the ears and makes for a very pleasant listen. She played at Barnes and Noble the other night in New York City, and I can’t think of a more perfect environment for her kind of music.

Sit back, relax, and let McRae’s calm voice and soothing melodies chill you out. And if “Highrises In Brooklyn” isn’t chill enough, head over to McRae’s MySpace and listen to the brilliant “Johnny Cash,” in many ways a superior song, a perfect addition to your bedtime playlist.

Regina Spektor – Blue Lips

Regina Spektor Blue Lips listen
I’ve been sitting on this one excitedly all weekend long — you know how I hate blogging on a Saturday or Sunday — and I’m excited to finally let you guys listen to a another new Regina Spektor song, “Blue Lips”! A couple of days ago, I put up Far’s startling commercial first single, “Laughing With.” Thankfully, Regina Spektor comes back to her senses on the beautiful “Blue Lips.”

Tomorrow, “Blue Lips” will grace Regina’s myspace page, as well as hit iTunes, along with “Laughing With” as a mini EP. Listen to “Blue Lips” after the jump. Continue reading →

Regina Spektor – Laughing With

Regina Spektor Laughing With listen
Regina Spektor has recently announced her new album (Far), as well as a tracklist and a cover for said album. But now we have our first taste of the new Regina Spektor on hand and it’s called “Laughing With.”

The song opens up with “No one laughs at God at a hostipal, no one laughs at God in a war” over a sullen piano and continues in that fashion for the song’s entirety. While the song is not bad by any means, it sounds like Regina Spektor is fishing for a GRAMMY with this new single, by pulling at the heart strings of the GRAMMYs’ favorite demographic. The same people that listen to Adult Contemporaneity radio restlessly and give Colbie Caillat and The Fray their earworm cutesy hits. “Laughing With” is destined to explode on AC radio, just not before you hear it scoring the closing credits on next week’s Grey’s Anatomy or Ugly Betty — or, God forbid, Gossip Girl. Far is out June 23rd via Sire Records. Continue reading →

pmaCAST #8 The “Gimme That Hot, Hot Love” Episode

pmaCAST #8 The Gimme That Hot, Hot Love Episode mp3

Radiohead opens up this week’s podcast with a double introduction. Three Leaves and a Head’s remix of “Reckoner” is a marvelous set of lulling, dramatic pianos and snaps. It leads in stealthily to In Rainbows‘ crackling and GRAMMY-famous “15 Step.” Regina Spektor follows Radiohead with an early demo of the beautiful “Samson.” This song is easily my favorite song off her album, Begin To Hope. From an established pop elite to a poppy act that has plenty of potential, I proudly play Asteroid Galaxy Tour’s “Around The Bend.”

If you listen closely, you’ll notice that this episode’s title is derived from “Around The Bend.” It’s just a great song. From here on, things get a bit heavier, you’ll notice I continue/close the pmaCAST with a handful of remixes. This podcast couldn’t be possible without RCRD LBL and Notes From A Different Kitchen who so graciously provided us with tracks that were vital to this podcast.

pmaCAST #8 Tracklisting
Radiohead – Reckoner (Three Leaves and a Head Remix)
Radiohead – 15 Steps
Regina Spektor – Samson (2002 Version)

Peaches – Search and Destroy (Iggy Pop Cover)

Stereogum & team9 Present… MySplice III

Stereogum & team9 Present... MySplice III mp3

Stereogum and team9 have teamed up for a third year in a row to bring us their MySplice III mashup compilation. The mix includes 2008 blog staples like Bloc Party, Lykke Le, of Montreal, Beck, and Crystal Castles mashed with 2008’s ineluctable pop hits (Britney Spears, Rihanna, Kanye, Katy Perry). Oh, and they through in some oldies as well (Cyndi Lauper, Guns N’ Roses, etc).

I don’t know if you guys feel it too, but I can’t help but think this is the best MySplice yet.

Stream the whole thing here, and download the mp3s below the player.

New Regina Spektor Video Better mp3

What’s there not to love about Regina Spektor? She’s an amazing performer, she’s adorable, and her album Begin To Hope has been one of the best pop albums in years. As Stereogum suggests: [Regina] doesn’t make casual fans, she makes obsessive fanatics. And these obsessive fanatics are in for a treat today, there is not one, but two new Regina Spektor music videos for “Better” circling around YouTube.

The last one reminds me of one big, long hair product commerical. The Jewness of it all is overwhelming. But here is my plea to Regina… NEW MATERIAL WOMAN! But I would still play major bucks to see you live, again and again.

But here are some songs that make my heart skip a beat:
