Cover Tuesday 15: is Back! Best Covers of Summer 2008

Cover Tuesday 15: is Back! Best Covers of Summer 2008 covers
Unless you can pull an awesome cover off!

I’ve read the emails and the comments — and even some freaky death threats. So, by popular demand, Cover Tuesday is back. Hopefully this will give you something to look forward to on Tuesdays again.

This summer has really been a good one for covers. I figured I’d so a mini-recap of the great new covers we all added (if not, do so now!) to our collections over the summer months. I’m taking about our two favorite MGMT songs being covered by some unlikely acts. Coldplay trying out dance pop. Vampire Weekend covering the only Fleetwood Mac song I like. Rihanna’s ode to Madonna. Madonna’s ode to ABBA. And Kinks going “violet.” Continue reading →

Gossip Girl vs 90210 Music Showdown: Episode 4

Gossip Girl Music Playlist for Episode 3 kills 90210’s music selections.

This week we will be trying to decide which show had the best music for their fourth episode. Just to clarify, 90210’s is one episode ahead of Gossip Girl because of its 2-hour series premiere (it counted as two separate episodes). Gossip Girl’s The Ex-Files episode features tons of, what can already be considered, 2008 classics; namely, more Santogold and MGMT. There was a pleasant surprise to Gossip Girl’s indie name dropping. Both Santogold’s and MGMT’s tracks made it to iTunes Top 100 chart. By now, Santogold’s “Shove It” has fallen off, but MGMT’s “Electric Feel” is still haning on.

Gossip Girl

Gossip Girl - The Ex-Files.
Santogold – Shove It
Cloud Cult – Please Remain Calm
MGMT – Electric Feel
Chris Chavez – The Observer
The Republic Tigers – Buildings and Mountains
Nappy Roots – Good Day
The Little Ones – My Morning Tide

90210’s music selection is still substantially larger than Gossip Girl’s, but remember, it’s not about quantity but about quality. 90210’s Music Supervisors seem to lack the ability to tie the song with the scene the way Gossip Girl’s amazing music team does. Oh and who the fuck is Senor Happy? And why did they play 3 of their songs?

90210 tries to play both fields by adding the chart-topping “Disturbia” and the Hot AC winner “Don’t Believe In Love,” but do shine their Pitchdork pride with some New Pornographers.

90210 – The Bubble
Rihanna – Disturbia
Headland – The Trance
Senor Happy – How Many Ways
Lori Denae – Changes
Lori Denae – Laving
Drug Rug – Day I Die
Senor Happy – She’s New
The Courteeners – Not Nineteen…
Senor Happy – Even The Score
Dido – Don’t Believe In Love
The New Pornographers – Adventures In Solitude

New Rihanna – Vogue (Madonna Cover)

Rihanna Fashion Rocks
It’s has been one huge fashion frenzy this week here in New York. I can’t imagine why… whatever. What I’m more interested in is this fantastic live rip of Rihanna performing her rendition of Madonna’s underground New York City gay club scene inspired “Vogue.” Rih Rih performed this little number at last Friday’s Fashion Rocks 5 (CBS aired Condé Nast Media Group’s 2-hour Fashion Rocks Special at Radio City Music Hall last night).

Beyonce, Black Eyed Peas, Chris Brown, Duffy, Fergie, Justin Timberlake, Keith Urban, Kid Rock, Lil Wayne, and Mariah Carey joined Rihanna on stage to perform in honor of Condé Nast Media Group’s Fifth Anniversary of Fashion Rocks celebration.

New T.I. & Rihanna – Livin’ My Life

Rihanna

Does anyone else think T.I.’s Paper Trail (out September 30th) is going to be the best rap album of the year?

So far, TIP’s cuts are impressing me a bit more than Weezy ever did with Tha Carter III — and Weezy never got that brilliant Rihanna feature on one of his tracks, come on Weezy, even Maroon 5 know Rihanna on your joints is a good thing… the idiot. Anyway, “Livin’ My Life” is one of those songs you just know will win the GRAMMY for Best Rap-Sung Collaboration.
This track is definitely hot, many thanks to Rihanna. Undying love for her. Oh… and T.I. has something to do with it too, I guess.

Here’s to hoping I won’t have to do THAT again!

Hello everybody!

I think (keyword: think) Pretty Much Amazing is ready to open for business. I have the theme figured out and everything in place. There are a few details that kind of suck (big time). For example, due to technical difficulties — really stupid ones — all posts from April to late June are lost. This is extremely depressing, but it hasn’t brought us down yet.

I do want to make it clear, just in case I already haven’t, that this blog has been temporary shut down, twice now, due to the massive server load we carry out every day. At one point in May and June, the server couldn’t take it anymore and my host had to give me the boot. All these fancy words like server and hosts confuse me just as much as it does you, so it took me quite a while to figure out what my b-plan was. Hopefully I have chosen a stable host that won’t implode with PMA’s traffic load. :)

But enough of the unpleasantnesses, lets move on to the music. I won’t even attempt to catch everyone up on what has been happening in the music world over the last few weeks. I trust that you guys have been scattering around the internet educating yourself… at least a little?

I’ll compromise, I’ll cover what’s been going on over the last few days.

Michael Jackson Akon Hold My Hand

Nothing has been more excited or buzztastic as that new Michael Jackson / Akon collaboration, unsettlingly called “Hold My Hand.”

I really don’t know if this is a Michael Jackson song or an Akon song… I’ve seen it both ways. Clarification? The song isn’t that great, but it’s good enough to deserve the attention it has been getting.

I hope I don’t get into too much trouble:

Michael Jackson & Akon – Hold My Hand

Jay-Z

This is probably equally as “shocking” and way more bad ass than MJ and Akon: Jay-Z covering Oasis’ supermegaultra-famous “Wonderwall” live at Glastonbury.

What a great way to wrap up the semi (ridic) beef.

He also covered Amy Winehouse’s “Rehab”, catch the mp3s down there.

Jay-Z – Rehab (Amy Winehouse cover) – Live @ Glatsonbury

Bloc Party - Mercury

And more recently, Bloc Party unleashes new single and video, “Mercury” to disgruntled fans, or at least one.

After a little pre-release hype, Bloc Party let another electro-inspired single on Zane Lowe’s radio show. “Mercury,” much like “Flux” hints to a massive electronic shift in the band’s upcoming, third album. I think Mr. Frank is spot on when he wrote:

Techno has made quite a resurgence in popularity over the last couple years with the likes of Justice and SMD gaining considerable notoriety from the press and fans alike. It’s kind of a turn off though when a talented British rock band like Bloc Party begins to eschew the natural direction of their music in order to cater to the everchanging trends of the music industry. A move which is usually followed by departure of their core audience, the ones that loved them for their first couple albums, which I thought were both excellent (Silent Alarm more so than Weekend In The City).

Maybe this song leaves more than one fan feeling a bit “disgruntled.” Download the song below, along with some key info about ‘Mercury’’s Aug. 11 release.

The Lost Cover Post

Pop Art

A beautiful pop art photo I found…Looks like I’ve neglected my cover-fans a lot more than I thought I did. Its true, I missed Cover Tuesdays twice now. And I’ve received the email backlash to back it up. So here is a little sorry present I whipped up just now. I am almost positive that I’ve posted these before, but they’re some of my favorites, and looking though my gmail inbox, they are some of you’re favorites too.

I am especially fond of John Mayer’s take on Radiohead’s Kid A. Machinae Supremacy retired “Gimme More” from its previous pole dancing infamy and turned it into something worthy of Reznor’s envy.

John Mayer – Kid A (Radiohead Cover)
Duffy – Ready For The Floor (Hot Chip cover)
Arctic Monkeys – Curtains Close/Rockafella Skank (Fatboy Slim cover)
Arcade Fire – Age Of Consent (New Order Cover)
Machinae Supremacy – Gimme More (Britney Spears Cover)
Amy Winehouse – Monkey Man (Toots and Maytal cover)
The Hold Steady – Running Against the Wind (Bob Seger Cover)
Franz Ferdinand – All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem cover)
Plain White T’s – Umbrella (Rihanna cover)

Late Half-Birthday

Late Half Birthday mp3

It has just occurred to me that last Wednesday was my half birthday. This is me kicking myself for wasting such great opportunities. I could’ve gone to Red Robbin and demanded a 50% discount on my meal, apposed to the free meal I’d get on my birthday. Or maybe an ice cream cone half-off, at least.

On a lighter note, PMA! has been shown some serious love from the Hype Machine. Twice this week has a track featured on this blog reached the No. 1 spot, putting the tally for No. 1’s from PMA! up to 6. Pretty sweet. Also a PMA! mention on BBC and New York Magazine made my day (week?). I’ve also a few tracks in my hands that have made my week, thank you elbo.ws!

The first one is pretty self-explanatory, Hot Chip and Diplo. Cue the ZOMG!!!!oneone!!!eleventyone!!!’s, no really, they’re in order. Maybe throw in a few OMGWTFBBQ!’s too. Don’t by shy, say it. This is Diplo. End. Of. Story. Mmkay?

Hot Chip – Shake A Fist (Diplo Remix) (YSI)

And here’s one that rocked my world earlier this summer. Courtesy of the magical Party Ben, here is one of the raddest mashups you will ever hear in your life. True story. Benny does a bang up job meshing one of the biggest songs of 2007 with one of everyones favorite 80’s kickback. You know what it is :)

Rihanna vs General Public – Tender Umbrella (YSI)

Calvin Harrris barely qualifies for my iPod (gr! my iPod Touch only holds 8GB –
thus, I’m effing selective), and ‘Merrymaking at My Place’ is one of those “I like it but I don’t at the same time” songs but this mix makes it lean towards the likable side of the spectrum. Just a bit. I could live with it being shorter though.

Calvin Harris – Merrymaking At My Place (Kissy Sell Out Mix) (YSI)
