New Robyn “Fembot”

New Robyn Fembot listen

It would be fitting to say that I was a bit worried about what Robyn and Diplo’s “No Hassle” meant for the direction Robyn was taking with their forthcoming album. However, that was nothing but an early demo. “Fembot”, is a finished product that premiered on Robyn’s website, sometime last night while I was catching up on Modern Family and 30 Rock.

“Fembot” sounds like a natural progression from what we heard on Robyn, and not a complete departure like “No Hassle”’s dub-y tones. A bonus — Robyn brags about her Automatic Booty Applications. No word if you can load that up on your iPad yet. Listen to “Fembot” below: Continue reading →

Robyn & Diplo “No Hassle”

Robyn & Diplo No Hassle listen

“No Hassle” is the first piece proper new music from Robyn in years. It is slated to appear on Robyn’s long awaited, Diplo-produced album, though it’s also likely that this is a demo and not an actual finished product. This possibility would actually sit better with me, because while I am excited to listen to new material from my favorite Swedish songstress, “No Hassle” is hardly up to par with what we heard on her eponymous album, and falls far below classics like “Be Mine” and “With Every Heartbeat”. Nonetheless, it is refreshing to hear Robyn over a retro, almost reggae beat. Maybe a little more M.I.A. will do “No Hassle” wonders.

Ted Leo Covers Robyn, Sade, Concrete Blonde

Ted Leo Covers Robyn, Sade, Concrete Blonde covers

Ted Leo, whose forthcoming album, The Brutalist Bricks, is out on March 9th, posted three covers via his Twitter account. This is what he had to say about them under 140 characters:

This evenings toss-offs: 3 power ballads by women, inspired by @debenham’s request for Robyn. Learn, play/record live, make into MP3s…

Ted Leo fuzzed-out and completely re-imagined Robyn’s “With Every Heartbeat”, Sade’s “By Your Side”, and Concrete Blonde’s “Joey”. Listen to the covers after the jump: Continue reading →

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009 featureArtwork by the talented and generous Adam Sarpalius.

The final list is here. We have been working on this Absolute (sarcasm) Best Songs of 2009 list all year, updating it at the end of every quarter. I was only going to have PMA’s Top 50 of the year listen, but I couldn’t narrow it down beyond the top 75. This list will represent and acknowledge some of the artists I felt had to be left out of our Best Albums of 2009 list.

As always, I upheld only one rule while making this list: a song cannot be on this list, unless it was released as a single. As a reminder, here is my definition of the word “single” — 1) A song that has been given away for free to promote an upcoming album (known as a promotional single). 2) A song that has been played on TV or the radio (two of the largest mediums of discovering new music). 3) A song with its own music video and/or EP. 4) Loophole: an album-track that has attracted enormous amounts of attention that it’s become that artist’s “calling card” of sorts.

I want to thank everyone who takes the time to leave a comment, even if its obvious that you came here through Google (PMA pops up when you google “Best Songs of 2009″). As always, don’t be shy to share your personal favorites of the year. Trust me when I tell you I didn’t go out of my way to list all of your favorite songs of the year, so if you want those songs represented, list them yourselves in the comments. I also want to thank the wonderful contributors this site has for helping me with this list. And finally, Adam Sarpalius, whose work as graced this list since July.

Now, onto the Top 75: Continue reading →

What if I told you Robyn was in the studio — in addition to Robyn masterminds Andreas Kleerup and Teddybears’ Klas Åhlund — with Diplo?

Robyn – Because Of Boys / A Cause Des Garcons (Yelle Cover)

Robyn Because Of Boys / A Cause Des Garcons (Yelle Cover) covers
As promised, here is Robyn covering my favorite Yelle track “A Cause Des Garcons” or “Because of Boys.” I love Robyn and all, but her cover of “A Cause Des Garcons” doesn’t come close to Yelle’s cover of “Who’s That Girl.” But at least we have a better idea of what we’ve been jamming out to every time we listen to “A Cause Des Garcons.”

I kid. I’m very glad iTunes made this happen. This was the second pair of singles released through their Foreign Exchange series. First up was +44 and Wir sind Helden. I have high hopes for possibly future installments.

Yelle – Qui Est Cette Fille/Who’s That Girl (Robyn Cover)

Yelle Qui Est Cette Fille/Whos That Girl (Robyn Cover) covers
epic photo by serhio. isn’t that shirt fuckin’ fantastic?! click to enlarge

My favorite femme parisienne, Yelle, (also known as Julie Budet) is part of iTunes’ inspired Foreign Exchange series. iTunes commissioned Yelle and Robyn to do each other for the world to enjoy. First up is Yelle covering Robyn’s “Who’s That Girl,” or “Qui Est Cette Fille.” My French is a little rusty, but as far as I can tell, Yelle’s version is exceptionally great. She made Robyn and her fans proud.

Röyksopp – The Girl And The Robot, Remixes

Excellent photo of Svein Berge

"Excellent photo of Svein Berge"

I’ve mentioned a couple of times that Robyn and Röyksopp’s “The Girl And The Robot” was and still is my favorite dance track of 2009. It will go down as this year’s “DVNO,” “Ready For The Floor,” or even this year’s “Eple.” As it usually goes with tracks like these, the remixes (if done correctly) are as much of a treat as the song itself. The following three remixes definitely did “The Girl And The Robot” right. Continue reading →
