Simian Mobile Disco offer up their sophomore studio album with an array of of color, texture and sound. Temporary Pleasure is a veritable smorgasbord. Just as stylized and hook-heavy as you please, with cameos galore. Known for working with artists the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and Peaches, James Ford bolsters his production skills to ’staggering’ heights here.
At first you’re all geared up for some sort of explosion. There’s this infinitesimal build-up that keeps going until you’re squirming in your seat, ready for the pay-off. Remember LCD Soundsystem’s “Get Innocuous”? There’s this incredible lead into such an luxuriant crescendo of disco dance rock that it literally explodes into first rate club boogie (that word’s disagreeable silliness aside, it means what it means) that has you moving non-stop in appreciation of it’s utter danceability. And Temporary Pleasures’ opening track “Cream Team” deceptively primes you to anticipate the equal possibility for such an occurrence. So you’re ready to be up out of your damn seat. Simian Mobile Disco – Synthesise / 1000 Horses Can’t Be Wrong

Today has been a good day for dance music here on Pretty Much Amazing. A rockin’, 13 minute take on LCD Soundsystem’s 45:33 and an infectious new Calvin Harris track have graced our home page over the last few hours. Now we look upon Simian Mobile Disco’s new album, Temporary Pleasure. Along with Calvin Harris’ new album, Simian Mobile Disco were on my mind this weekend.
The big-star collaborations have been put aside already. “Audacity of Huge” featuring Yeasayer’s Chris Keating has been quite an impact, becoming one of my favorite songs of the year. Also leaked was “Bad Blood” featuring an important chunk of Hot Chip, and we can’t forget Beth Ditto’s contribution in “Cruel Intentions.”
This those three singles (at least I hope they’ll be singles) in tow, there’s little doubt that SMD’s Temporary Pleasure will remain 2009’s most impressive dance release.
What’s really exciting is that SMD can keep a listener on edge even without a huge co-headliner. Perfect examples of this are the compelling tracks, “1000 Horses Can’t Be Wrong” and “Synthesise.” Continue reading →

Simian Mobile Disco – Cruel Intentions (ft. Beth Ditto)

I’ve been dying to listen to “Cruel Intentions” since word of a Beth Ditto and SMD collaboration first let out. But since that announcement, stellar Simian Mobile Disco tracks with Yeasayers’ Chris Keating (”Audacity of Huge“) and Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor (”Bad Blood“) have been released, and have both blown me away in two different ways.
Did “Cruel Intentions” blow me away? In a very special third way, it did. Beth Ditto puts away her stifling vocals and finds the disco diva locked up inside. The funny part of it is that “Cruel Intentions” would have not been out of place on the Gossip’s latest set, Music For Men. SMD’s upcoming Temporary Pleasure is three for three so far. Listen to the track here. Continue reading →

Simian Mobile Disco – Bad Blood (feat. Alexis Taylor of Hot Chip)

Simian Mobile Disco rocked my world with their upcoming album’s first single, “Audacity of Huge.” Yeasayer’s Chris Keating hauled major ass over a bouncy beat only SMD can get away with producing.
Now, one of the most recognizable voices in electronic music has jumped on Simian Mobile Disco’s Temporary Pleasure. Hot Chip’s Alexis Taylor lends his voice to the subtle “Bad Blood.” This new song isn’t instantly accessible like “Audacity of Huge,” but saying its an acquired taste would be overstating it.
With two huge names like Simian Mobile Disco and Hot Chip, it is easy fall into the patterns of high expectations and the letdown that usually follows it. Simian Mobile Disco is here to make music that will make you dance, plain and simple. And if you go into this with no other expectations, you might be pleasantly surprised. Listen to “Bad Blood” Continue reading →

“Happiness hit her like a train on a track, coming towards her stuck still no turning back,” Florence Welch whispers above the lulling ukulele of “Dog Days Are Over,” the opening track off of her first full-length release. And before anyone can say much of anything, the ropes have been let loose, the horses are in full gait, and Welch’s wild shouts and yelps lead the raging pack’s charge until there’s no turning back: “Leave all your loving, your loving behind / You cant carry it with you if you want to survive.”
July 6 marks the official UK release of Lungs, the aptly-titled debut of a fresh, exciting troupe from England known as Florence & The Machine, fronted by a witchy chanteuse that coos much sweeter and cries out much louder than the vast landscape of dull, auto-tuned drones currently on the scene. Arctic Monkeys – Crying Lightning

Mere hours before British radio was supposed to premiere the Arctic Monkeys’ new first single for their forthcoming Humbug, “Crying Lightning” hit the internet. I love when that happens.
The Arctic Monkeys opted to stray from their traditional, straightforward approach and have crafted a song far more complex than say, “I Bet You Look Good On The Dance Floor.”
The hook isn’t as hook-y as the aforementioned song, but signature Alex Turner melody and lyric is spot on. The guitar work on “Crying Lightning” is especially great. Guitarists Turner, Cook, and Bass Guitarist Nick O’Malley are spinning a web rather than rushing into a raw explosion of sound that has become common in Arctic Monkey records. Listen to “Crying Lightning” here Continue reading →

PMA’s Top Songs of the Week #1
I’ve done Top Song lists for April and May of 2009 using the Hype Machine’s Favorite Tracks system. Earlier today, while stuck in traffic, I was hit my inspiration — I could easily use PMA’s very own raw mp3 download data to formulate these lists. With this data, I can even make these lists a weekly occurrence and over .zip’s and everything. I felt this was an overall good idea.
So every Friday I will post up the 7 most downloaded tracks on Pretty Much Amazing and offer a .zip file as well. So here they are, this week’s top 7.

Read on for download links and a .zip Continue reading →

Simian Mobile Disco – Audacity Of Huge (Naum Gabo Remix)

A few days ago, I let you guys stream Simian Mobile Disco’s newest single, “Audacity Of Huge” featuring Yeasayer’s Chris Keating. Radar Maker sent over this official remix by one Naum Gabo. I am unfamiliar with Naum Gabo, but if the rest of his work is half as good as this remix, I will easily become a fan.
The relies on heavy cowbell use that instantly reminds me of Soulwax. As good and interesting as this remix is, it has nothing on the original. Blame the lack of Chris Keating’s vocals, if you’d like.
