PMA’s Oscar Live-Blog, PART ONE.
Welcome. Take a seat, take a breath, relax. And enjoy the over-hyped, meaningless, very important, fun, funny (sometimes), and exciting (also sometimes) night that is the Academy Awards- with PMA’s live-blog at your side!
Here’s how this live-blog will work. I’ll post minute-by minute observations of the show from the start to the finish. And all of you readers out there are welcome to chat along in the comments! Almost everyone seems to believe that this is a fake, but very accurate prediction of what’s to come for Oscar Sunday. Aside from Amy Adams’ supposed victory, the list really does seem dead-on. The only thing it doesn’t predict well, in my opinion, is Hugh Jackman’s inevitable mediocre job as host. I like the guy, but Jon Stewart is much funnier- he should be the new yearly lock. Whatever. The Pussycat Dolls Do Slumdog Millionaire’s “Jai Ho”

Sadly, yes I’m being completely serious. I wasn’t sure whether to call this a cover or a remake or even a remix. Basically, PCD decided to add their vocals to this Polow Da Don produced take on A.R. Rahman’s Academy Award nominated Slumdog Millionaire closer. The scary part is that “Jai Ho” has really good chance of winning the Oscar for best song.
No word on why this song was ever recorded, but I have noticed that someone doesn’t want this song on the internet — all of the links I’ve found, so far, have been deleted. But I managed to cop an mp3, listen to it below:
UPDATE: Apparently PCD is planning on doing a covers album. So far they have covered the Rihanna & Chris Brown duet “Bad Girl” (that might be a bit insensitive now…) and now “Jai Ho,” the Slumdog closer. Continue reading →

The Thinking Man’s Take On: The Oscars
The scene: An actor stands at a podium, clutching a shiny figurine, beaming with joy. He has just seen the toils of his life’s labor of love come to fruition in the form of the highest honor. Years of slaving away on hot sets, sleeping in cramped trailers, and signing strangers bosom’s has finally paid off. He has won the MTV Movie Award for Best Onscreen Kiss.
Unfortunately, we’re going to have to wait for that pinnacle of award shows until the summer months, forced to settle for some guy named Oscar’s picks for big film awards. C’est la vie (French for “that’s the vieâ€).
I can never remember if the Oscars are the award show where that lady with the skeletal face and her daughter ooh and ahh over celebrities, asking them “Who are you wearing†and other questions that don’t make grammatical sense in English. But I’m pretty sure they are. In the past, I haven’t paid too much attention to them – sure I was psyched when Denzel won for Training Day in ‘0r, pumped for the Coen brothers’ Fargo win, and excited when Lord of the Rings: Return of the King won everything except Best Animated Short in ’04, but I wasn’t excited about the Oscars.
But this year, for one of the first times in a long time, I’m excited about the Oscars. I attribute my excitement to three things:
1. Great music is nominated. Sure, the academy left off Bruce Springsteen (Jersey Pride!), recent Golden Globe winner for “The Wrestlerâ€, but they showed remarkable hipness with nods to M.I.A., A.R. Rahman, and Peter Gabriel.
2. Stellar films are in the running, and for the first time in a long time, I’ve actually seen most of them.
3. I’m excitable.
Now, I’m not going to claim that I am the most exited person on the planet about these Oscars. That honor goes to this guy. Nor am I the most knowledgeable (again, this guy). But I do write a column on a pretty great music blog where the readers know a thing or two about good flicks. So without further ado, my predictions for the 2009 Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Academy Awards of Merit for films released in the calendar year of 2008, better known as Los Oscars. M.I.A. is having an awesome 2009, 3 weeks in.
Maya Arulpragasam (better known as M.I.A.) is having an already stellar 2009. Good for her. Let’s look at the things she has to look forward to in February.
For one thing, she’s pregnant and her baby is due February 8th! As if that weren’t exciting enough, on that night (GRAMMY night), Ms. Arulpragasam is nominated for two GRAMMYs: one for Record of the Year for “Paper Planes,” and another for Best Rap Song for “Swagga Like Us” — under the technicality that the song samples “Paper Planes” and she wrote “Paper Planes,” and in the GRAMMY panel’s eyes, that’s the exact same thing.
That’s pretty huge stuff. For some women, having a child is the highest honor. For some musicians, winning a GRAMMY (or two) is the highest honor. She’s doing pretty damn good as a female musician if you look at it that way. Now what if this lauded female musician mother/GRAMMY-winner wins an Oscar? That would be pretty fucking crazy, no?
That could very well be M.I.A. come February 22nd because — you guessed it — she’s nominated for an OSCAR for her fantastic work in “O Saya,” one of a few M.I.A. songs featured on the annoyingly overrated Slumdog Millionaire. If she were to win, she’d share the Oscar with A.R. Rahman, who nominated for another Oscar for Best Original Score for “Slumdog.”
