Best Album of 2007 Poll

Best Albums of 00 | 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08 | 09

2007 might just be my favorite year for music releases this decade. Unfortunately, many, many great albums were left out of this list. It was pretty hard leave them out, but I couldn’t press the little blue “Publish” button without any of the following albums on the list:

A. LCD Soundsystem – Sound of Silver
B. Radiohead – In Rainbows
C. Arcade Fire – Neon Bible
D. Spoon – Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga
E. M.I.A. – Kala
F. Panda Bear – Person Pitch
G. Animal Collective – Strawberry Jam
H. of Montreal – Hissing Fauna, Are You The Destroyer?
I. Kanye West – Graduation
J. Amy Winehouse – Back To Black

Albums we love but didn’t make the shortlist: Continue reading →

Spoon – The Mystery Zone

Spoon The Mystery Zone listenNew Spoon! “The Mystery Zone” is another taste of Spoon’s forthcoming album, Transference. Indie superstar and Spoon ringleader, Britt Daniel, has announced that Transference is a “pure” Spoon album, being the first album the band self produced.

“The Mystery Zone” will be third track found on the hotly anticipated LP. “Got Nuffin’,” the lead track off the band’s last release, the Got Nuffin’ EP, will also appear on Transference (track 10).

Using “The Mystery Zone” and “Got Nuffin’” as judging points, the likelihood of Transference besting Spoon’s last three LPs is quickly diminishing. But Spoon is known for throwing us curve balls, and with numerous modern classics under their wings, who am I to doubt them?

Transference will be out January 26th via Merge. Another January release to put on your calendar. Listen to “The Mystery Zone” here: Continue reading →

Yeasayer – Ambling Alp

Yeasayer Ambling Alp listenYeasayer are giving away “Ambling Alp,” the first single off their sophomore LP, Odd Blood on their website. You can also purchase a “very limited” 12″ vinyl containing the single and instrumental plus remixes by Memory Tapes and DJ /rupture, all enclosed in a “space age metallic sleeve.” Well worth the $8, if you ask me.

“Ambling Alp” is the type of bright, weird pop gem that you yearn for, without knowing it. But the satisfaction that comes after the first few listens is undeniable. Yeasayer’s upcoming album, Odd Blood is out February 9th on Secretly Canadian.

In other news, Spoon announced a 7th album. It will be called Transference and it will be out on January 26th. Here is the tracklist: Continue reading →

Best Songs of the Decade (2000-2009)

I wasn’t going to do this. Working on the Best Albums of the 2000s was going to be enough work. But after reading through some pretty great lists by Pitchfork, I Guess I’m Floating and Gorilla vs Bear, I was reminded of something very important — although the album is the most vital instrument a musician has at his disposal to get an idea or feeling across to listeners, we can’t undermine the importance of a song. A song gives you small doses of relief, comfort, or what have you, minutes at a time.

I gave a fair amount of thought into this list, but for the most part, I knew how it would turn out. This list is mine and mine alone; I am inviting you to my world where I don’t need to explain myself or answer to anyone. But as always, I encourage you all to leave your thoughts and your personal picks in the comment section.

I would like to end with… well, I can’t really say it better than Connor from IGIF. The last 10 years have been the biggest of my life, especially my life as a music lover, so these next 120 songs are the songs that have shaped and molded me into whoever I am today. That’s as personal as it gets.

[rating:60/100]
Fresh on the heels of the news that they’ll be recording a new Long Player this summer, Spoon the band has gone ahead and released a summertime EP to tide over rabid fans.  It’s hardly more than a glorified single – a solid radio-ready summer tune backed by a marching b-side, a tribal lo-fi instrumental track, and a remix of said tribal lo-fi instrumental track.  But for loyal fans of utensils, who haven’t gotten a new song since 2007, this morsel will ease the hunger pangs.

Spoon is no stranger to the EP; Got Nuffin is their 6th entry into the medium.  2008’s the Don’t You Evah EP took The Natural History’s “Don’t You Evah” and covered and remixed it into oblivion.  Others, like Love Ways EP and Soft Effects EP, took a more traditional approach to the format, with five unique songs making up the releases.  Got Nuffin is a bit of a compromise between the two – short, mostly sweet, and a bit repetitive.

Most Listened To..., Week Ending 5/23/09 feature
If you’re anything like me, you are a tiny bit obsessive compulsive when it comes to charts and numbers (and iTunes organization, album art work, et al). Since December, I’ve made to make every listen count, whether it be on my iPod, iPhone, at home, or in the car. As you might have already guessed, almost every moment in my life is attached to some sort of group of songs. I want document each week’s listening achievements. Take this journey with me. Arcade Fire, Spoon & Bon Iver for Dark Was The Night

Arcade Fire, Spoon & Bon Iver for Dark Was The Night listen

Spoon – Well-Alright

“Well-Alright” sounds like classic, old school Spoon, with it’s thumpin’, toe-tappin’ bassline and Britt Daniel’s jerky vocal delivery. This easily makes it one of Dark Was The Night’s most fun songs. On the compilation, it follows Sufjan Steven’s 10 minute epic “You Are The Blood.” I’ve never thought of using Spoon as a pallet cleanser, but the DwtN people did and it worked out pretty great. Listen to “Well-Alright” below: Continue reading →

What’s Going on This Week?

Whats Going on This Week? gigsAnd here begins a new weekly (no really, weekly!) post from your pals at PMA- a guide to the week in concerts in LA, NYC, Chicago, London, and Sydney!

NYC has a grrreat set of shows in the area this week. Tuesday and Thursday night you can catch Matisyahu at Webster Hall for 35 buckaroos. If you miss him there, you can catch him at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

If 35 is a little much for your pocket, you may want to consider checking out our favorite cutesy singer, Kimya Dawson, made famous from everyone’s favorite (well, not my dad’s) cutesy movie, Juno. She’s playing Friday night at the Bowery Ballroom for a very reasonable $13.

And don’t forget to spend one of your eight nights on hanukkah with Yo La Tengo, playing their traditional eight-night gig at Maxwell’s, over in my home state, NJ. The shows are SOLD OUT, but craigslist proves to be helpful with these kinds of things.

Not too much going down in LA this week.Your best bet is Saturday night at the Spaceland, with two of my favorite newer bands. Continue reading →
