The opening notes of Major Lazer’s debut album evoke an old Western movie, counterparts riding toward each other, gritty and determined looks on their faces, horse hooves scraping the dusty ground, tumbleweeds blowing across the barren landscape. The next 41 minutes and 50 seconds throw that image out the window, sacrificed in favor of summer parties, dancehall clubs, and Bacardi commercials. It’s a summer fling of an album, all fun and no commitment, blatantly here to party, break some things, and then go home. Sweet.
Major Lazer is the nom-de-record of the collaboration between producers Diplo and Switch. The name belongs, supposedly, to a one-armed Jamaican commando who fought in a secret zombie war. Instead of prosthetic arms, he now has lasers for hands. Yes, you read that correctly. Given that back story, Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do sounds pretty much exactly how you’d expect it to – complete with off the wall beats, uncontrollable lyrics, and awesometastic videos.
It seems that just about everyone I’ve talked to was skeptical about this whole Diplo and Switch sideproject, Major Lazer. Need I remind everyone that Diplo and Switch brought us the wonderful sounds of M.I.A. and Santigold? I never thought that Diplo and Switch’s collaboration would be anything but awesome.
“Hold The Line” is the first leaked track to come Major Lazer’s project, and the vocals are lead by Miss Santi White. Mr. Lexx also contributes, but I think I was sold when I heard Santigold’s track come in. According to their wiki page, their album, Guns Don’t Kill People…Lazers Do, was recorded in Jamaica. Vocalists Santigold, Vybz Cartel, Ward 21, Busy Signal and others contribute guest vocals to the album.

The walking meme (as Hipster Runoff once put it), Bjork had her “Náttúra” remixed by M.I.A. and Santoigold producer, Switch. This is a real remix, people. Big ups to NME for this one.
It’s a breath of fresh, crisp air blowing through the stale atmosphere that has been lingering around awkwardly since Animal Collective, Erol Alkan, MSTRKRFT, and N.A.S.A. all took turns raping “Zero.”
Maybe the Yeah Yeah Yeahs should get Switch to remix “Zero.”

Brooklyn’s Dirty Projectors and Vancouver’s No Kids will criss cross the continent several times over the next month as they team up for a brief tour together. The two coed bands each have a few dates on their own as well. In other news, Dirty Projectors turned in a fantastic cover of “Hyperballad” for Stereogum’s Björk tribute which you can download for free here. The band was recently added to both the ATP Vs. Pitchfork fest in the UK and the Pitchfork Music Festival which takes place in Chicago this July.

Santogold (Santi White) is a relatively new (or unheard of) singer/songwriter from Brooklyn, NY, at least that was the case until just about everyone has put her on their 2008 New Artist Radar. Oh and check this out, according to Rolling Stone, Miss Santi has been co-writing with Lily Allen and Mark Ronson, opened for Bjork at Madison Square Garden. Now, she is working on her own debut album.
From what I’ve heard off of her EP I Believe in Santogold, all I have to say is DAMN! I BELIEVE IN YOU TOO! Santogold definitely reminds me (and just about everyone) of M.I.A., who knew we would find someone like that in the States?
