The Hush Now – Hoping And Waiting

The Hush Now Hoping And Waiting listen
With Fountains of Wayne on hiatus, and Weezer’s latest disappointing everyone, the music world has been devoid of good ol’ fashioned nerdy power-pop. Here to fill that void is The Hush Now, with a catchy, clever little gem called “Hoping and Waiting.” “Hoping” is complete with an organ, an opera break in the middle, and a trumpet call straight out of “Penny Lane” (thanks to Music For Robots for that similarity).

As MFR also notes, the entire song is led by an underlying rocking bass – but it’s not the bass line that will be stuck in your head after you hear “Hoping and Waiting” for the first time. It’s the chorus, the too-easy, haven’t-I-heard-this-before refrain that will find it’s way into your head and stay there after just one listen. And don’t be surprised if soon enough, it’s been ten listens. This is a track that will be on repeat all day and will finally get old as the night winds down. But that doesn’t mean you won’t be humming it as you fall asleep.

#22. Jay-Z & The Beatles – 99 Problems (Danger Mouse)

#22. Jay Z & The Beatles 99 Problems (Danger Mouse) featureArtwork by Adam Sarpalius

As 2009, and the decade come to a close, PMA will be looking back at our favorite songs of the last ten years. We will update a list with 75 empty slots until we reach that song that changed everything. You can keep track of this list by keeping an eye on this page. We make these lists in hopes that you guys will chime in the comments and share your favorite musical moments of the noughties.

#22. Jay Z & The Beatles 99 Problems (Danger Mouse) feature Off the Godfather of Bootleg/Mixtape hits, The Grey Album, “99 Problems”, fusing the worlds that surround Jay-Z and the Beatles, DJ Danger Mouse’s complex put-and-paste job overshadows the Rick Rubin-produced original.

You can hear Danger Mouse’s painstaking precision on “99 Problems”. He plays to Jay-Z’s strengths as a rapper and lyricist, while still giving a respectful nod to Rick Rubin’s already-genius production work, with the “Helter Skelter” loop featured on the track. Passed the novelty and shock of the entire project lies a true piece of hip-hop pop art.

Learnalilgivinanlovin’

Learnalilgivinanlovin favorite songs
Gotye. I’ve been urged to blog about Wally De Backer’s music for a while now. Don’t you dare ask me why I haven’t. Maybe I thought you weren’t ready for this? Maybe I simply kept forgetting to?  Well whatever the reason, Gotye’s music has remained, for the most part, a nicely kept secret. Last year, this tune, “Learnalilgivinanlovin’” was released in various parts of the world, but garnered very little exposure for the young Australian artist.

Luckily, Backer will receive his very first US release with a 7″ single for “Learnalilgivinanlovin’.” It will be backed by a remixed by Passion Pit. Hopefully that will certainly entice people to go out and listen to Gotye. It will be released via Neon Gold on August 17th. It only costs $5. Buy it here.

Bonus: Gotye – Heart’s A Mess

Cover Tuesday 18: On Wednesday!

Cover Tuesday 16 covers
Unless you can pull an awesome cover off!

Not even the calendar can stop me from posting some covers! Tuesday was really busy for me + no planning = Cover Tuesday on Wednesday.

But I’m sure you don’t mind.

Coldplay – When You Were Young (The Killers cover): The mp3 does have a really long live introduction (sort of), but the cover is worth it. I do know the quality will bug some people, but this was the best I could get my hands on. If you’ve got better, please share.

Fiona Apple – Across the Universe (The Beatles cover): “Across the Universe” is arguably the best Beatles’ song ever. Hell… it’s arguably best song ever written. This female vocalist spin on it is a very nice touch. Though, I’m still a fan of Jim Sturgess‘ theatrical version.

Franz Ferdinand – Mis-Shapes (Pulp cover): Franz Ferdinand have a knack to cover songs how the Arctic Monkeys cover songs: banging on a guitar whilst hollering post-punkesque vocals.

Kasabian – Out of Space (The Prodigy cover): It’s been a long while since I’ve even thought about Kasabian. File this cover under the “Better Than The Original” category.

John Mayer – Kid A (Radiohead cover): I won’t front. I do enjoy myself some John Mayer tunes. He has a great voice and, depending on my mood, his tunes can be real tear-jerkers. But it’s hard not to do that Juno “WHOA! DREAM BIG” thing when you listen to this cover. Maybe tackling “Kid A” wasn’t a good idea. Stick to the easy stuff — “Creep,” anyone?

Jay Z Goes Global with MSN mp3

Jay-Z’s performance at the Hammerstein Ballroom in New York is about to
be broadcast for the whole world to see, thanks to msn.com. The concert “in its entirety” (and supposedly “unedited”) will be broadcasted starting this Tuesday Nov. 20th. Expect special guest appearances by Diddy and Weezy (Lil Wayne for you unhip folks). I wouldn’t be surprised if we saw some Beyonce cha-cha… okay maybe a little.

Lately, I have been having trouble finding a remix that mad me going ga-ga. Diplo changed all that with his remix/mash-up of an adored Beatles track. It goes a little something like this:
