PMA Gotta Love The BPM Podcast #1 August 2008

PMA Gotta Love The BPM Podcast #1 August 2008 listen

I’ve kept this blog up through some tough times and it will keep on coming — now with a monthly podcast! I’ve wanted to do a Pretty Much Amazing podcast for quite a while now, but I’ve wanted it to be different than all the other podcasts. So what’s a blog to do? Pretty Much Amazing hooked up with Just Jace — a SICK DJ from Omaha, NE to create Gotta Love The BPM. In a sense the PMA Podcast is more like a series of mini DJ sets. Well I’m going to stop trying to sell this thing to you, so on to the first Pretty Much Amazing Podcast! Download away.

Thom York vs Trent Reznor: Chi-Town Take Over

Radiohead vs Nine Inch Nails

Yesterday, Chicago Sun-Times blogger, Jim DeRogatis leaked the entire lineup for what looks like 2008’s best summer music festival, Lollapalooza. The first four artists on the roster get your blood pumping, but two in particular caught my attention. Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails.

Radiohead and Nine Inch Nails have been taking turns giving the music industry the big finger. The Brits made headlines last October for releasingIn Rainbows without the control support of a record label, and Trent Reznor’s Nine Inch Nails followed suit with last month’sGhosts I-IV.

The two bands have also been busy one-upping each other with their innovative promotion strategies. Life was happy having two brilliant bands continuously providing for innovative and buzzworthy ways to distribute digital media, simultaneously help digging record labels’ graves. That is, until Reznor accused Radiohead of ripping their fans off by selling them low-quality files.

Wired has come up with a 10 round face-off between the bands, and looking at the people’s votes, it seems Nine Inch Nails has got Radiohead beat in terms of innovation. Now we pose this question, who will take over Chi-Town this first week of August (Aug 1-3)?

The official lineup is found below

New Music: The White Stripes, The Go! Team, and M.I.A.

New Music: The White Stripes, The Go! Team, and M.I.A. mp3

Its around post-Brunch and its great day out; today I update your music library (or recycling bin) from Beverly Gardens.

New Music: The White Stripes, The Go! Team, and M.I.A. mp3

PMA Rating: A
First on my list of new singles and leaks are The White Stripes and their new single, “You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)”. This song caused me some trouble when it first leaked but it was well worth it. It seems as though the Jack White machine wrote himself up an instant American Classic (take notes, Billy Crogan). This self-damning jem proves to be one of the best from the Stripe’s latest full-length, Icky Thump. I think all of us should give Icky Thump another listen and see what wonders we might have missed the first few dozen times around.

Listen | White Stripes – “You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)”
Watch | White Stripes – “You Don’t Know What Love Is (You Just Do As You’re Told)”

PMA Rating: B+
We move from the next American Classic to British Cheerleaders on meth, coke, crack, and whatever your mother takes when she thinks you’re not looking. Of course, The Go! Team are always a blast with the whacky-crazy-fun hype going around in the background mascarading itself as music, but it seems I can’t listen to more than a handful of songs before I have a couple handfuls of hair ripped off my head. One minute its Gwen Stefani on speed and the next is this spinning freak show that almost makes you want to puke, but in their latest single, “Doing It Right”, god, they did it right! They hit the sweet spot inside every pop lover and it feels like home (if home was filled with… ahh nevermind, I think you get it). Lets hope Proof of Youth (drops September) is just as scandalously delicious.

I am sure many of you shared the sheer joy I felt when I finally found a working link for M.I.A’s Kala when it leaked earlier this week! When it first hit my speakers, I was sold. The 200 mile-per-hour metallic beat and the sounds of cars zooming while M.I.A rhapsodizes about pleasures unknown to man, mark her triumphant return into the spotlight. The track is “Bamboo Banga”, and as it progresses, my ears are treated far better than I had expected. The thumping, intensified beat swirls around siren-esque vocal samples that break down then suddenly bring the material to life. A perfect introduction to an album whose impressiveness is matched only by its whimsicality.

Listen | MIA – “Bamboo Banga”

Free Music is nice and all, but wouldn’t you prefer the happy feeling your soul gets when you actually buy music? Take a peek at Amazon, eMusic, and iTunes.
