The Golden Filter – Thunderbird

The Golden Filter Thunderbird listen

The Golden Filter are freaks of nature in this bloggy world. Months (or maybe even a year) ago, their first and only single “Solid Gold” hit the web to worldwide acclaim. Sprinkle on a few well-crafted remixes for the likes of Peter Bjorn & Jon and the Jay-Z sanctioned Empire of the Sun, and somehow this wonderful, mysterious band is filling up clubs all over the world.

Now, the long awaited follow-up single has arrive. Almost. Dummy is releasing the Golden Filter’s new single, “Thunderbird” on a 12″ record on 11/16 (you can pre-order now). The 12″ will include a White Stripes cover (”The Hardest Button To Button”), and I’m really excited for that.

Is it better than “Solid Gold”? Definitely not. But the soft disco and pop sensibilities of “Thunderbird” reminded me of a subdued Music Go Music track, specifically “Warm in the Shadows.”  I actually played “Warm in the Shadows” right after “Thunderbird”’s 5 and a half minutes reached an end. It wasn’t until then that I knew how disappointed I felt about the Golden Filter’s follow-up to what may have be the best pop song of the year (”Solid Gold” was officially released February 15th overseas, it has not been released stateside yet). You can download “Thunderbird” here:

Empire of the Sun – We The People (The Golden Filter Remix)

Empire of the Sun We The People (The Golden Filter Remix) listen
These zany looking ‘mos are Empire of the Sun, one of the many new Aussie imports that I have failed to pay proper attention to. Empire of the Sun is an spunky little duo made up of two other Aussie acts I also don’t follow closely, The Sleepy Jackson and Pnau. Note the myspace links I’m leaving… this is your cue to do some homework and get caught up. Empire of the Sun released their debut album, Walking on a Dream in October of 2008 in Australia and Feb and March elsewhere. Walking on a Dream hit stores Stateside on April 21st. Expect a review up real soon.

PMA faves, The Golden Filter took it upon themselves to remix Empire of the Sun’s great, great debut single, “We The People.” The product is a 7 minute dance epic. It’s not meant for the dance-floor per se, but any dance music fan will appreciate this, especially at the 4:50 mark. Is it too early to nominate this for Best Remix of 2009 honors? Extremely better than the original. Listen to it here Continue reading →

Remix-A-Day: Little Boots and Little Boots is Golden

Because we are focusing more on upcoming musical releases around here, new remixes get the short end of the PMA stick, sadly. I am determined to devote one post a day on new remixes, instead of bunching 10+ remixes in bulk. That has become somewhat tacky. Click here to read all of our Remix-A-Day remixes.

Remix A Day: Little Boots and Little Boots is Golden mp3Today’s Remix-A-Day is a twofer! Mostly because I love you and mostly because I love Little Boots and probably because I FORGOT to do one yesterday! Thanks to Keso, who is quickly becoming my go-to guy for Little Boots hizzies, we find Golden Panda remixing Little Boots’ “Every Little Earthquake” and it’s magnificent! I love that we’re getting all of Hands (LB’s debut album!) in remixes before we hear the actual tracks.

You will be hard-pressed to find a negative review of the Golden Filter (especially of their SXSW performances). You will also be hard-pressed to find a better Little Boots remix. Earlier this month I told everyone that “New In Town” was Little Boots’ in for the big times. Golden Filter’s remix of “New In Town” won’t do much for LB making it to the big leagues, but it does give you one helluva remix to keep stuck on repeat. Continue reading →

Through The Golden Filter, You See The Golden Light

Through The Golden Filter, You See The Golden Light listen

The Golden Filter – Solid Gold | Peter, Bjorn & John – Lay It Down (The Golden Filter Remix)

I know I’ve used this excuse countless times, but yes, once again, I have completely ignored an great group/band/artist, just because I “don’t have time” to listen to everything without having to sit in front of this screen for 8 hours a day. I won’t bore you with my lame excuses and I’ll just cut to the chase. 6 months ago, The Golden Filter was this very mysterious, very DIY type of band. Since then, the Golden Filter has worked with Cut copy, Peter Bjorn & John, Little Boots, and Empire of the Sun. They put the blogosphere ablaze with their infectious, bubble-electro tune, “Solid Gold,” and are finally releasing a limited edition 7″ on 2/16 in the UK via DUMMY and it will include b-side “Favourite Things” along with “Solid Gold” remixes by Russ Chimes, Mondkopf, and Clouded Vision digitally). I have a feeling these guys will be huge in 2009.

On January 30th, The Golden Filter made its North American live debut in New York City with the Presets, Heartsrevolution, and Pink Skull — you can catch the rest of the dates for their Spring tour on their Myspace page.

Sunny Day Sets Fire – Adrenaline (XXXChange remix)

Sunny Day Sets Fire is this sugary indie pop based out of “London via Italy, Hong Kong & Toronto,United Kingdom,” according to their Myspace page. This international group of friends released an album last year called, Summer Sound, but with all of the other British debut acts to compete with, Sunny Day Sets Fire’s album fell short. But the band is ready to move passed that and are preparing for the release of their Adrenaline EP on February 9th. Included in the EP is this great remix by Spank Rock producer XXXChange. This remix doesn’t live up to XXXChange’s top notch remixes (remember his remix of Thom Yorke’s “Eraser”? Beautiful!), but it’s good enough to bring some attention to his fun band.
