[rating:54/100]
Simian Mobile Disco offer up their sophomore studio album with an array of of color, texture and sound. Temporary Pleasure is a veritable smorgasbord. Just as stylized and hook-heavy as you please, with cameos galore. Known for working with artists the likes of the Arctic Monkeys, Klaxons and Peaches, James Ford bolsters his production skills to ’staggering’ heights here.

At first you’re all geared up for some sort of explosion. There’s this infinitesimal build-up that keeps going until you’re squirming in your seat, ready for the pay-off. Remember LCD Soundsystem’s “Get Innocuous”? There’s this incredible lead into such an luxuriant crescendo of disco dance rock that it literally explodes into first rate club boogie (that word’s disagreeable silliness aside, it means what it means) that has you moving non-stop in appreciation of it’s utter danceability. And Temporary Pleasures’ opening track “Cream Team” deceptively primes you to anticipate the equal possibility for such an occurrence. So you’re ready to be up out of your damn seat. GOSSIP – 8th Wonder, Tour Dates

GOSSIP 8th Wonder, Tour Dates listen
This is one of my favorite tracks on Gossip’s Music for Men. Does it sound like the epitomy of angry chick rock? Maybe a tad….But I’ll take it.

Ditto’s vocals are less nasally and more kick ass than in some of the other tracks on the album. The furious guitar and relentless drums serve only to emphasize this fact.

The strange somewhat assonant harmonies that are formed throughout the cut are unreal. I can’t exactly but my finger on it, but there’s something about “8th Wonder” that makes me want to rebel, defy, and be a bitch.

Definitely a track to turn up and rock out to. Cheers Gossip, I like your style.

Read on to listen to “8th Wonder” and for Gossip’s new US tourdates. Continue reading →

The Gossip – Are You That Somebody? (Aaliyah Cover)

The Gossip Are You That Somebody? (Aaliyah Cover) covers
Umm, can I just say this? OH MY GOD!

When I saw that Confusion posted this last night, I thought I would die. No one should mess with “Are You That Somebody?” — especially not some shameless feminist punk rocking lesbian. But then I said that out loud (the “shameless feminist punk rocking lesbian” part), and decided that it was fuckin’ brilliant idea!

I’m glad Beth Ditto toned it down for her rendition of what has to be my favorite R&B song of all time. We didn’t need her flexing the golden pipes over this one. To be honest, I’d think Beth would be out of her element here, but the shameless feminist punk rocking lesbian sounds right at home making some smooth Rock&B tunes. It’s a good look. pmaCAST #14: Yes, I Love Fred Falke Remixes

pmaCAST #13 The Twist on Natural Law Episode mp3

DOWNLOAD: MP3 / iTUNES

And here is the fourteenth installment of the pmaCAST, a bi-monthly playlist that I hope will enrich and soundtrack your week. This week I went with a digital vibe that I have been shaking off for a while now. It has caught up with me, and has now permeated through the pmaCAST. I use some all-time favorites (Belle & Sebastien, LCD Soundsystem, Roisin Murphy, Daft Punk, Peaches) as well as some new-found loves (Fred Falke, obiously, everyone else).

I’m not going to upload and post up all of the tracks like I did last time, but I will put up a few tracks featured on this weeks’ playlist that I think will make your life a lot less sucky.

Ratatat – Lex
MEN – Credit Card Babie$
The Pragmatic – You Blame Me
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour – Push The Envelope

Please (HEART) these songs if you enjoyed them!

The Gossip – Dimestore Diamond

The Gossip Dimestore Diamond listen
The Gossip are prepping to release their Rick Rubin produced, Music For Men on June 23rd in the US, and so far, first single “Heavy Cross” is one of my favorite tracks of the year. “Dimestore Diamond” is the latest track to leak from the album, and it happens to be the album’s opener. The song opens with deep penetrating drums and a deep south bass line — cue Beth Ditto’s sultry, but tame vocals.

Nothing too exciting happening here, but as you can imagine, “Dimestore Diamond” is the soft, sweet track that ushers in the dance-punk goodness of “Heavy Cross” and hopefully the rest of Music For Men follows suit. Listen to “Dimestore Diamond” here Continue reading →

Fred Falke Remixes The Gossip, Heavy Cross & Ladyhawke, Back of the Van

Fred Falke Remixes The Gossip, Heavy Cross & Ladyhawke, Back of the Van mp3
Fred Falke’s unique remixing style has me raving in my chair. This is a true story. As much as they make you want to dance your ass off, his remixes are distinguished and smooth. Fred Falke doesn’t go out of fashion on when he jumps on The Gossip and Ladyhawke; his remixes are just as tuggable as ever.

The Gossip – Heavy Cross

The Gossip Heavy Cross listen

You’re moments ago, but seconds away
This Washington state trio is revered for their gut-wrenching, foot-stomping indie-punk vibes and Beth Ditto’s prolific wailing (not to mention her nudist fuckeries). What will fans think of the new, Rick Rubin-produced LP? They will love it, if they happen to also like Franz Ferdinand.

If memory serves, and it usually does, the Gossip aren’t doing anything usual or despicable, and this is not another one of Ditto’s fuckeries. The Gossip are there — the moment that comes after the moment where the band crawls out of the garage. The moment where a band feels they have accomplished everything they ever wanted to accomplish. All that there’s left is to dance. We’ve seen it happen to time and time again. Most recently with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs.

Read on for a peek at “Heavy Cross” and the Sounds’ new single, “Dorchester Hotel” Continue reading →
