Best Album of 2006 Poll

Best Albums of 00 | 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08 | 09

Alright guys, we’ve made it to 2006. You know the drill by now. Because we’re approaching the not too distant past, it’s becoming harder and harder to make these top 10 lists. I feel like most of these albums are fresh in my mind (in fact, I still listen to most of them today). As always, there will be some omissions you will probably not like at all, like Bloc Party’s absence in 2005 — pretty good album, but hardly came close to Top 10-dom. This year’s omissions feel extra painful because I love the albums left out almost as much as I love the Top 10 itself. Albums left out include works by Sunset Rubdown, Band of Horses, Neko Case, Liars, Beirut, Bob Dylan, The Thermals, among others. But let’s focus on the albums that “made the cut”.

A. The Knife – Silent Shout
B. TV on the Radio – Return To Cookie Mountain
C. The Hold Steady – Boys and Girls in America
D. Clipse – Hell Hath No Fury
E. Ghostface Killah – Fishscale
F. Gnarls Barkley – St. Elsewhere
G. Joanna Newsom – Ys
H. Arctic Monkeys – Whatever People Say I Am That’s What I’m Not
I. The Decemberists – The Crane Wife
J. Grizzly Bear – Yellow House

Good luck finding your favorite, because we’re having the toughest time.

The Hold Steady Tours, Covers Springsteen, Makes Documentary

The Hold Steady Tours, Covers Springsteen, Makes Documentary covers

The Hold Steady, one of the greatest and most consistent rock bands of this generation, is releasing a live documentary called A Positive Rage, which, considering their live reputation, should be phenomenal. The DVD comes out on April 7th, along with an extra live album.

Make sure to check out the band’s fantastic cover of Bruce Springsteen’s “Atlantic City” (for the latest charity covers album, War Child: Heroes), right here. The cover adds horns to brilliant effect, and since Finn already sounds a lot like Springsteen, it works really well overall. Listen to the cover:

What’s Going On?

Whats Going On? gigs

In NY: The Bowery Ballroom is the place to be this week, with shows from The Rosebuds (Friday night), FRIGHTENED RABBIT (!) (Saturday night), and Department of Eagles (Monday night), and ANIMAL COLLECTIVE (Next Wednesday night). Granted, the Bowery is kind of the place to be every week.

But don’t think the Bowery is your only option this week! You’ve got Animal Collective playing their first NYC show of ‘09 at the Manhattan Center Grand Ballroom on Tuesday. Also Tuesday, party to the music of Fucked Up at the Market Hotel. And don’t forget about the best show of the week, next Wednesday (January 21st) at the Bell House. Recap-rockers Previously On Lost will be playing their odes to Jack, Sawyer, Locke, etc. at their SEASON PREMIERE PARTY for the greatest television show on air. You’ll watch the two hour premiere event first, and then finish it off with an awesome concert.

And, the FLEET FOXES are playing SNL this week! How awesome is that?

Pretty Much Amazing’s Best Albums of 2008

Pretty Much Amazings Best Albums of 2008 best of 2008
2008 was quite a year for music. Maybe it wasn’t as great as 2007, but we made due with what we had. I didn’t connect with an album in 2008 the way I connected with In Rainbows, or Neon Bible, or Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. Those were albums that had me falling in love with every track listen after listen. However, the following twenty albums are my favorite albums of 2008 and ranking them was somewhat painful/futile — which is why we came to the conclusion that numbering year-end lists was completely sacrilegious and spat in the face of music lists everywhere.

After deciding to trash the option of numbering this list, I went with dividing my Top 20 albums into 3 categories: Big Albums by Big Names, Newcomers, and Eye Openers. Are you ready? Here are Pretty Much Amazing’s 20 Favorite Albums of 2008.

Leave your top albums in the comments, if you’d like! We’d love to hear them! Oh and if you have a blog and have posted a year end list, drop the link in the comments as well!

The Lost Cover Post

Pop Art

A beautiful pop art photo I found…Looks like I’ve neglected my cover-fans a lot more than I thought I did. Its true, I missed Cover Tuesdays twice now. And I’ve received the email backlash to back it up. So here is a little sorry present I whipped up just now. I am almost positive that I’ve posted these before, but they’re some of my favorites, and looking though my gmail inbox, they are some of you’re favorites too.

I am especially fond of John Mayer’s take on Radiohead’s Kid A. Machinae Supremacy retired “Gimme More” from its previous pole dancing infamy and turned it into something worthy of Reznor’s envy.

John Mayer – Kid A (Radiohead Cover)
Duffy – Ready For The Floor (Hot Chip cover)
Arctic Monkeys – Curtains Close/Rockafella Skank (Fatboy Slim cover)
Arcade Fire – Age Of Consent (New Order Cover)
Machinae Supremacy – Gimme More (Britney Spears Cover)
Amy Winehouse – Monkey Man (Toots and Maytal cover)
The Hold Steady – Running Against the Wind (Bob Seger Cover)
Franz Ferdinand – All My Friends (LCD Soundsystem cover)
Plain White T’s – Umbrella (Rihanna cover)
