Wolf Gang – The King And All Of His Men

Wolf Gang The King And All Of His Men listenI’ve been listening to a lot of happy music this month. That’s a trend I don’t want to end just yet, and it’s a trend that Wolf Gang perpetuates with excellent single “The King And All Of His Men.”

Think the glitzy pop of The Killers without the self-seriousness, or MGMT minus the heavy beats (maybe even a little bit of Empire of the Sun?),  “King And All Of His Men” rocks out with pounding piano chords, swirling synths, and epic “oohs.”  The sound is unique, catchy, and just BIG.

This is full, expansive, music, building towards an ending complete with tribal drums, hand-claps, choral harmonies, and layers and layers of sound. “King” will surely be filling arenas, and should be filling your iPod headphones for the rest of the day, if not the year.

New Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, Thom Yorke, and Killers on ‘New Moon’

The indietastic soundtrack for the upcoming Twilight sequel has leaked, spurring a lot of excitement amongst the blogs. Excitement not misplaced, may I add. I’ve only had a short while with the soundtrack, but it’s definitely a great collection of songs; a NOW That’s What I Call Indie Music of sorts.

On the flip side, some people hate the idea of their favorite bands coming together to score a cheesy vampire romance movie. Get. Over. It. The first soundtrack sold over 2.4 million copies in the US alone and it featured tracks by Iron & Wine, The Black Ghosts, Mute Math, as well as Muse and Paramore. Maybe having our precious indie/alternative music reach the ears of millions of crazed, adolescent girls isn’t ideal, but I still think the more people that are into it, the merrier. And the cherry on top are these songs by Bon Iver & St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear and Beach House’s Victoria Legrand, Thom Yorke, and the Killers: Continue reading →

Best Songs of the Decade (2000-2009)

I wasn’t going to do this. Working on the Best Albums of the 2000s was going to be enough work. But after reading through some pretty great lists by Pitchfork, I Guess I’m Floating and Gorilla vs Bear, I was reminded of something very important — although the album is the most vital instrument a musician has at his disposal to get an idea or feeling across to listeners, we can’t undermine the importance of a song. A song gives you small doses of relief, comfort, or what have you, minutes at a time.

I gave a fair amount of thought into this list, but for the most part, I knew how it would turn out. This list is mine and mine alone; I am inviting you to my world where I don’t need to explain myself or answer to anyone. But as always, I encourage you all to leave your thoughts and your personal picks in the comment section.

I would like to end with… well, I can’t really say it better than Connor from IGIF. The last 10 years have been the biggest of my life, especially my life as a music lover, so these next 120 songs are the songs that have shaped and molded me into whoever I am today. That’s as personal as it gets.

PMA’s Top Songs of the Week #1

I’ve done Top Song lists for April and May of 2009 using the Hype Machine’s Favorite Tracks system. Earlier today, while stuck in traffic, I was hit my inspiration — I could easily use PMA’s very own raw mp3 download data to formulate these lists. With this data, I can even make these lists a weekly occurrence and over .zip’s and everything. I felt this was an overall good idea.

So every Friday I will post up the 7 most downloaded tracks on Pretty Much Amazing and offer a .zip file as well. So here they are, this week’s top 7.

The Killers – Joy Ride (Night Version)

The Killers Joy Ride (Night Version) listen
This new “Night Version” of the Killers fun and bouncy “Joy Ride” can be found as a B-Side for their new single, “The World We Live In.” What the Killers should have done is just release “Joy Ride” as their single and shelved the whole “The World We Live In” idea. The idea the Killers ran with was making “Joy Ride,” an already fun fusion of disco and rock, even more dance-floor friendly, or perfect for the night about town.

They transformed “Joy Ride” into well, *crappy joke time* a joy ride Running at just over 7 minutes long, “Joy Ride (Night Version)” is an epic journey that takes you through a 1950s jazz bar, fully equipped with brass and hand drums and jazz guitars. For a second, you start to wonder if Hercules and Love Affair had anything to do with this marvelous transformation, something I wish was on the original cut on the album. Read on to give “Joy Ride” 2.0 a listen. Continue reading →

The Killers – Four Winds (Bright Eyes Cover)

[rating:62/100]
The Killers Four Winds (Bright Eyes Cover) listenEveryone’s favorite band from Las Vegas is about to have a great spring. Not only are they headlining the desert sun music festival in California in less than three weeks, but they are also hitting up Chi-town, kicking asses and taking names @ Lollapalooza later this year. They are celebrating what will be a stellar festival season with a little EP in promotion to the terrifically unabashed alien-abducting second single off of their Day & Age (which we absolutely loved!), “Spaceman.”

The EP will include the song itself, along with a Close Captioned version of the track — I’m thinking a cross between “Spaceman” and the “Exitlude” from Sam’s Town. Thrown into the mix is Brandon Flowers’ ode to Conor Oberst and Bright Eyes’ biggest song ever, “Four Winds.” Continue reading →

Remix-A-Day: The Killers – Spaceman (Steve Aoki & The Bloody Beetroots Remix)

Remix A Day: The Killers Spaceman (Steve Aoki & The Bloody Beetroots Remix) mp3
A remix a day keeps the doctor away, and the doctor lalala-LOVES this remix

Because we are focusing more on upcoming musical releases around here, new remixes get the short end of the PMA stick, sadly. I am determined to devote one post a day on new remixes, instead of bunching 10+ remixes in bulk. That has become somewhat tacky. Click here to read all of our Remix-A-Day remixes.

I always thought that “Spaceman” was a fantastically danceable second single. Sure, it was Killers danceable, but danceable nonetheless. As enjoyable it was to rock out to “Spaceman,” what Steve Aoki and The Bloody Beetroots have done with it is nothing short of a godsend. Continue reading →
