Well, its that time of year again. The wonderful summer weather is quickly becoming a thing of the past, everyday I find myself stuck behind a school bus in an Irish Catholic neighborhood, and another hope crushing, tear inducing, life raping season of football is right around the corner (I am a Buffalo Bills fan). But all is well… because nothing can take away the 2 most important things this world has to offer: Great Music and Hot Girls. I dedicate this mix to the wonderful women and titillating tunes that get me through my workday… which consists of tons weed whacking and mowing lawns. Thank heavens for the 200k education I just finished…
All kidding aside, I actually love the fall and am in no way the pessimistic male chauvinist bastard that wrote the paragraph above… although my job really does suck.
As you know, I like lists. All kinds of lists. But my favorite are musically inclined lists. The end of the decade is approaching rather quickly, and with lists on my mind, I’ve been thinking about something I think a you all ought to be thinking about. The best albums of the 2000s. What were the first great albums of this millennium? Jeff Lind is down for the task of finding out. But he won’t do it alone.
From now up until late December, we will try to figure out what have been the best albums of the 00s, by year. This will amount to a total of 10 albums, one from each year, to keep things even. This is how it will work — for each year, Jeff and I will pick one album as our favorite, but we will also hold a poll for you all to vote on to find the PMA Readers’ choice for best album. Hopefully we will decide on two distinct albums to remember that given year.
We will be starting off with the year 2000. I have drawn up a list of 10 albums released in the year 2000 (in the US). This list was derived from various year-end lists from publications like: Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll, Pitchfork, Mojo and Metacritic. Please select the album you think was the best in 2000. If your choice isn’t on here, we’d love to see it in the comments section (though, we’d appreciate if you’d vote for your favorite on the list anyway).
A. OutKast – Stankonia B. Radiohead – Kid A C. Modest Mouse – The Moon And Antarctica D. Yo La Tengo – And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out E. Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP F. PJ Harvey – Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea G. The New Pornographers – Mass Romantic H. Primal Scream – XTRMNTR I. Aimee Mann – Bachelor No. 2 J. Sleater-Kinney – All Hands On The Bad One
Gossip Girl Music Playlist for Episode 3 kills 90210’s music selections.
This week we will be trying to decide which show had the best music for their fourth episode. Just to clarify, 90210’s is one episode ahead of Gossip Girl because of its 2-hour series premiere (it counted as two separate episodes). Gossip Girl’s The Ex-Files episode features tons of, what can already be considered, 2008 classics; namely, more Santogold and MGMT. There was a pleasant surprise to Gossip Girl’s indie name dropping. Both Santogold’s and MGMT’s tracks made it to iTunes Top 100 chart. By now, Santogold’s “Shove It” has fallen off, but MGMT’s “Electric Feel” is still haning on.
Gossip Girl - The Ex-Files. Santogold – Shove It Cloud Cult – Please Remain Calm MGMT – Electric Feel Chris Chavez – The Observer The Republic Tigers – Buildings and Mountains Nappy Roots – Good Day The Little Ones – My Morning Tide
90210’s music selection is still substantially larger than Gossip Girl’s, but remember, it’s not about quantity but about quality. 90210’s Music Supervisors seem to lack the ability to tie the song with the scene the way Gossip Girl’s amazing music team does. Oh and who the fuck is Senor Happy? And why did they play 3 of their songs?
90210 tries to play both fields by adding the chart-topping “Disturbia” and the Hot AC winner “Don’t Believe In Love,” but do shine their Pitchdork pride with some New Pornographers.
90210 – The Bubble Rihanna – Disturbia Headland – The Trance Senor Happy – How Many Ways Lori Denae – Changes Lori Denae – Laving Drug Rug – Day I Die Senor Happy – She’s New The Courteeners – Not Nineteen… Senor Happy – Even The Score Dido – Don’t Believe In Love The New Pornographers – Adventures In Solitude
Pretty Much Amazing’s Listening Booth is where we get to talk about our favorite new songs! Yay!
This Is Ivy League – The Richest Kids Is this music or is this a mere exploitation of a hyped demographic *cough* Vampire Weekend *cough*? I’m glad to say, this is music. Real. Good. Music.
Wyclef Jean – Fast Car (remix feat. Lupe Fiasco) At first, I thought this was just a new Lupe Fiasco track. Warning to those who want to add Cool Youg Lou to your remix team: He’s a verse hogger.
G-Unit – Grimey In this new track from the upcoming G-Unit mixtape, 50 Cent confesses to being dirty, grimy, and filthy, but doesn’t go on to admit himself as a tired MC.
R. Kelly – Hairbraider Obviously seeking to put claims about his kinky eccentricities to rest, R. Kelly has written this song about the qualities he looks for in a good hairdresser (chief among them: superior stripping ability).
And now moving onto our daily downloads. These are free and legal. So download away.
