Best Album of 2004 Poll

Best Albums of 00 | 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08 | 09

We’re finally closing the first half of the decade. So far, we’ve had to make some obvious, almost obligatory choices… as well as some that you may not have expected. Either way, Jeff and I are still relying on your votes and comments, and we thank you for sticking with us this long.

2004 was a crazy year for music. So crazy that I had to take an extra day to finalize this list. There was Kanye West’s debut album, arguably my personal favorite hip hop album ever. Arcade Fire also brought their Funeral that year too (and as you might know, that has been my favorite album of the last 10 years). Brian Wilson chose to finally release his SMiLE, 37 years in the making. I won’t go on… but hopefully you get the point.

As always, I looked through various year-end lists published by some of our favorite publications. The shortlist was created by looking through year-end lists by the Villiage Voice’s Pazz & Jop Poll, Pitchfork, Tiny Mix Tapes, Drowned By Sound, Stylus and PopMatters.

A. Kanye West: The College Dropout
B. Arcade Fire: Funeral
C. Animal Collective: Sung Tongs
D. Brian Wilson: SMiLE
E. Madvillian: Madvilliany
F. Franz Ferdinand: Franz Ferdinand
G. The Streets: A Grand Don’t Come For Free
H. Elliott Smith: From A Basement On The Hill
I. Modest Mouse: Good News For People Who Love Bad News
J. TV On The Radio: Desperate Youth, Blood Thirsty Babes

Best Album of 2002 Poll

Best Albums of 00 | 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08 | 09

Continuing in our quest to find the best albums of the 2000s, we look at the greatest albums released in 2002. A very fine year in music. As always, we depend on your votes to help us come closer to our verdict of the best album of the last 10 years, in the mean time, we will outline your favorite and our favorite albums of each year.

For 2002’s list, I turned to the Village Voice and their righteous Pazz & Jop Poll, surveying nearly 700 critics. I also went through a few Year-end lists presented by The Onion’s AV Club.

Please vote for the album you think was the best in 2002. If your choice isn’t on here, we’d love to see it in the comments section (though, we’d appreciate if you’d vote for your favorite on the list anyway). Here are 2002’s finalists:

A. The Streets: Original Pirate Material
B. Coldplay: A Rush Of Blood To The Head
C. Missy Elliott: Under Construction
D. Wilco: Yankee Hotel Foxtrot
E. Beck: Sea Change
F. Sigur Rós: ()
G. The Roots: Phrenology
H. Queens of the Stone Age: Songs for the Deaf

The Streets – The @SkinnerMike EP Vol. 1 (Stereogum)

The Streets The @SkinnerMike EP Vol. 1 (Stereogum) listen
Like a mentioned earlier, The Streets announced that he was going to record and debut three new songs in three days via his Twitter account. Stereogum took initiative and called this out as the first ever EP released via Twitter. They even made a cover for it (above). The Twitter-milestones keep on coming: just last night Ashton Kutcher beat CNN and became the first twitterer with 1 Million followers. Holy crap!

Anyway, Mike Skinner already announced that he would premiere another 3 songs NEXT week! Is he going to record the very first twitter-distributed album? No, that would be NIN’s or Radiohead’s next move, right?

The @SkinnerMike EP Vol. 1 Tracklist/Download Continue reading →

New Lady Sovereign – I Got You Dancing

New Lady Sovereign I Got You Dancing listenSeriously? Wow this is so cool. I’ll be honest here, the only Lady Sovereign song I’ve ever listened to was “Love Me or Hate Me” (or something like that), it was pretty forgettable but I do remember that I liked it. But nothing enough to make me want to listen to the rest of her album. I’m pretty sure I didn’t miss much.

Anyway, “I Got You Dancing” is Lady “Biggest Midget In The Game” Sovereign’s new, free, ridiculously danceable single. I also hear that this sophomote album will be released on Sovereign’s barely established record label. Maybe that’s the way you DIY bands should do it — become one-hit wonders, have a flop of a debut album, wait 2-3 years and start your own label. Or go all Radiohead on everyone.

Listen to I Got You Dancing after the jump! Continue reading →

New The Streets – The Escapist

The Streets
I’m definitely behind on this one, but what can you do?

The Streets’ new album Everything Is Borrowed is almost upon us. But to stay on top of things, subscribe to Mike Skinner’s newsletter via Vice Recs and grab your free “The Escapist” mp3. It’s a pretty good deal. Everything Is Borrowed is set to drop September 15th and Mike describes his latest opus as a “peaceful coming to terms album” with “peaceful positive vibes”. We’ve heard 3 songs off this new album, and so far, this album is shaping up to be quite different than what we’ve become accustomed to expect from The Streets. I’m not complaining though! It’s actually pretty exciting.

New The Streets – Everything Is Borrowed

The Streets
The Streets’ Mike Skinner has just uploaded the title track to Everything Is Borrowed to his myspace page, and its pretty fantastic — though the quality isn’t superb.

“Everything Is Borrowed” is certainly an essential 2008 song. If my hunch is correct, we might be nodding to an even greater quintessential Streets’ tune. Listen to it below (thanks to Punkreas), and take a peek at Skinners’ magnificent collaboration with the magical Muse.

New Muse and The Streets – Who Knows Who

Muse

A new Muse and Streets track leaked this morning. Apparently the track is not to be taken seriously and will not be released on either act’s new albums. This is a statement Muse released in respect to the track leak:

The MP3 floating around on the message boards at the moment is a track we recorded with Mike Skinner a few months ago. The track was the result of a late night jam session and something we did for a bit of a laugh featuring a blues riff we have been playing live recently upon which Skinner recorded some vocals. It is not intended to be a serious release so we are happy for it to be leaked around unofficially. Hope you enjoy, Cheers. Matt, Dom & Chris.

Well Muse, I did enjoy it. Download it below

Muse & the Streets – Who Knows Who
BONUS: Muse – Map of the Problematique (Does It Offend You, Yeah? remix)
Muse – Muscle Museum (Soulwax Remix)
Muse vs The Killers – When You Were A Starlight (team 9 Remix)
