To promote his newly released solo debut, Phrazes Of The Young, the Strokes frontman is playing a string of LA shows. We have a pair of tickets for his show at the Downtown Palace Theatre on Nov 13th at 8pm, if you’re interested.

It’s not easy to pick the best album of a particular year. Music is the soundtrack to our lives, and it means different things to individuals depending on where they’re at when an album is released. Over the next few months I’m gonna tell you what albums we liked each year over the past ten years and I’ll also talk about your collective choice for best album each year. Anytime you narrow down entire years music down to 10 choices, you’re gonna miss some great music, and I know some of you think these types of articles are a waste of time. To you I say this:
Get over it. It’s my time I’m wasting. If you don’t wanna waste your time, don’t read.
PMA will still cover the latest music as it comes out, so you’re not missing anything there.
We see value in remembering great music from the past. Some of our readers may have missed these albums the first time around, so it’s still exposure to new music, even if it’s from 10 years ago.
I hope you enjoy this segment while it lasts, and get into the dialogue. We’ll probably nail some of your favorites and dreadfully miss others. Let us know what you think of the choices in the comments, and tell us what changes you’d make.
In the meantime, here are the winners for The Best Album of 2001. Enjoy! Continue reading →
We’ve set out to find the 10 best albums of the decade, according to our readers as well as our own personal favorite. So this gives us a maximum of listing the 20 best albums of the 2000s. Though I haven’t ruled out the possibility that the Readers’ and PMA’s choices might be the same album. So we’ll play this by ear.
Like last time, I’ll list ten candidates for best album of 2001. These candidates are determined by their inclusion in various year-end lists from publications we trust, including, the Village Voice 2001 Pazz & Jop Poll, NME, The Onion, Mojo, Los Angeles Times, Spin, and Uncut. Please vote for the album you think was the best in 2001. If your choice isn’t on here, we’d love to see it in the comments section (though, we’d appreciate if you’d vote for your favorite on the list anyway).

Free Energy, the band, have just released an mp3 for “Free Energy,” the song. “Free Energy” can be found on Free Energy’s debut 7″ out on July 21st on DFA. The single will be backed by “Something In Common” and will be limited to 350 copies.
If you remember, Free Energy were responsible for the great, great summer jam “Dream City.” The new single never quite reaches the excellence that is drenched in “Dream City,” but it’s still a great hooky track, tinged with that muddy garage-band feel that made you fall in love with the Strokes and Little Joy.
No, not the sport. The awesome, funky, LCD Soundsystem-esque band that is making their way through the blogosphere. That Hockey.
Hockey is hailed as a synth-laden version of The Strokes, or perhaps more accurately by Pinglewood.com: “if Julian Casablancas and James Murphy had met in 80s New York and become inseparable buddies, dragging each other in and out of CBGBs and Studio 54.”
The band is likely to be one of 2009’s big breakout artists, and their great single “Too Fake” shows off immense versatility. Starting out with a new-wave, electro opening and building to a catchy, poppy chorus, “Fake” should be on repeat for all PMA readers this week. Let me know what you think- a YSI download link is posted below.
Go Back To The Zoo is another reason to love the Netherlands — I have a whole list of reasons to love the Netherlands, btw . These guys are a really nice wave from the Strokes pool and I’ve been listening to “Beam Me Up” nonstop for days now. Also, when I listen to this song, I get the oddest urge to buy Nike. Maybe this is why. No, but seriously, “Beam Me Up” is such a fun listen; you won’t regret it. Continue reading →

There have been some crazy good Justice remixes out there lately. Here are my favorites.
(This was supposed to be up on Tuesday, but well… you know)
My brain doesn’t want to cooperate with me at the moment, so I decided to wiki Tuesday and post up the first paragraph.
“Tuesday is the day of the week between Monday and Wednesday. The name comes from Middle English Twisday, from Old English Tiwes dæg, named after the Nordic god Tyr, who was the equivalent of the Roman war god Mars, and Greek god Ares.”
Thrilling. But really, here are some interesting finds of the day.
YouTube Probes Into ‘Music is My Hot Hot Sex’ Music Video YouTube is looking into the music video from Brazilian pop group Cansei de Ser Sexy’s ‘My Hot, Hot Sex’ which as of this submission has racked up 89,750,739 views making it the most popular video ever! Problem is, far fewer viewers are leaving a recommendation after watching it, implying use of an automated, non-human method to inflate the clicks.
