New Bon Iver, Grizzly Bear, Thom Yorke, and Killers on ‘New Moon’

The indietastic soundtrack for the upcoming Twilight sequel has leaked, spurring a lot of excitement amongst the blogs. Excitement not misplaced, may I add. I’ve only had a short while with the soundtrack, but it’s definitely a great collection of songs; a NOW That’s What I Call Indie Music of sorts.

On the flip side, some people hate the idea of their favorite bands coming together to score a cheesy vampire romance movie. Get. Over. It. The first soundtrack sold over 2.4 million copies in the US alone and it featured tracks by Iron & Wine, The Black Ghosts, Mute Math, as well as Muse and Paramore. Maybe having our precious indie/alternative music reach the ears of millions of crazed, adolescent girls isn’t ideal, but I still think the more people that are into it, the merrier. And the cherry on top are these songs by Bon Iver & St. Vincent, Grizzly Bear and Beach House’s Victoria Legrand, Thom Yorke, and the Killers: Continue reading →

Thom Yorke – Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses / The Hollow Earth

Thom Yorke Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses / The Hollow Earth listen

Even Thom Yorke can not figure out whose name his latest two singles, “The Hollow Earth” and “Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses”, are really being released by. Yorke says, “They are loosely under the Thom Yorke name this time, although these days it’s all getting kind of blurry.”

No matter who is releasing these songs however, Radiohead fans and the rest of the music world are far more concerned with how the songs sound and what direction Yorke is heading in now. Unlike earlier Radiohead transitions that seemed completely out of the blue, this musical shift is a clear progression from In Rainbows.

“Feeling Pulled Apart By Horses” is a “radical rework” of an old song which has incredible drum work and vocal delivery by Thom that faintly resembles In Rainbows. Johnny Greenwood co-wrote “Feeling” and it sounds much more “Radiohead” than “The Hollow Earth”, which is clearly Yorke’s solo work.

Yorke describes “Earth” as a “bass menace” and he does not disappoint. The bass and entire instrumental work on the song are worthy of a Radiohead LP, and the vocals blend in nicely. These two singles will be available for download “around the 6th of Oct through the usual channels,” according to Yorke. Listen to them here: Continue reading →

Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy covers
Dozens of your favorite music artists have banded together to help Mark Mulcahy (former Miracle Legion front man) continue to make music while raising his 3-year-old twins, after the tragic death of his wife. Artists like Thom Yorke, Michael Stipe, and The National are contributing covers of songs written by Mulcahy in the compilation Ciao My Shining Star: The Songs of Mark Mulcahy which is out 9/29. Stereogum reports that “An additional 20 tracks from folks like A.C. Newman, Buffalo Tom and Laura Veirs will be released digitally. Also expect concerts to coincide with the release. One will take place in London, one in New York.”

Remix-A-Day, part 2: DOOM – Gazillion Ear (Thom Yorke Remix)

Because we are focusing more on upcoming musical releases around here, new remixes get the short end of the PMA stick, sadly. I am determined to devote one post a day on new remixes, instead of bunching 10+ remixes in bulk. That has become somewhat tacky. Click here to read all of our Remix-A-Day remixes.

If you haven’t heard DOOM’s new album, you are certainly missing out. “Gazillion Ear” was always one of my favorite DOOM tracks, and Thom Yorke transforming it into what could easily be Radiohead’s most experimental b-side ever. It’s a marvelous remix, even if it does sound like it was made for Radiohead’s upcoming LP — I have found that emcees doing their thing over Radiohead works quite well. Continue reading →

Blog Wars: The Genius Playlist | Round 1, Battle 2

Just incase you missed it: here is the first battle of The Genius Playlist Blog Wars. Refer to that post if you don’t know what’s going on.

On the first battle, Sheena Beaston and Pigeons & Planes went head to head and fought for your votes. The final verdict: Sheena Beaston takes a whopping 65% of the votes. Sorry Pigeons, but you’re out.

On today’s Blog War battle, we’re pinning up The Music Slut and We All Want Someone… together. Both participants had to create Genius Playlists starring Radiohead’s “Bodysnatchers.”  This time it’s going to be a tad bit more difficult to decide on who to vote for because iTunes’ Genius selected songs that appeared on both of the lists. It’s going to be interesting to see which few songs prevail and snag your vote.

The Music Slut and WAWSTSF duke it out with Radiohead and co. as their ammo. Vote or Die!

Radiohead – Reckoner (Mr Vega Remix) (Three Leaves and a Head Remix) (Chark Mu Remix)

Radiohead Reckoner (Mr Vega Remix) (Three Leaves and a Head Remix) (Chark Mu Remix) mp3

Don’t think I’m provide all coverage on this “Reckoner” Remixtravaganza, but here are three more remixes that I found interesting:

Mr Vega Remix: I am usually very impressed by Mr Vega’s remixes, but I am just not feeling the tremulous and pulsating vibrato effect he put on Thom’s vocals — though that is my only complaint, the instrumentals are fantastic. One of the best sounds I’ve heard on any “Reckoner” remix.

Three Leaves and A Head Remix: This is the first time I’ve posted a Three Leaves and A Head remix and I hope it won’t be the last. 3L+H’s “Reckoner” remix features a soothing yet subtly angry piano medley and what seems to be strategically engineered snares. This remix doesn’t sound like a remix at all, it sounds like an extension to “Reckoner,” and it’s truly beautiful. Radiohead would be proud

Chark Mu Remix: Chark Mu’s “Reckoner” remix sounded like it was trying to make Thom Yorke sound like a disco diva — a thought I’m not all that comfortable with. This remix messed with Radiohead in a way I didn’t really like.

Listen and Download the remixes below! Continue reading →
