Music From Gossip Girl: Season 3, Episode 9

Music From Gossip Girl: Season 3, Episode 9 listenThis season of Gossip Girl has been slow and (more often than not) boring. So slow and boring that I just watched episode 9, thus the tardiness of this post.

I’m going to switch up the way I do these because the plot hasn’t been the only thing taking a toll this season. I’ll still give you every week’s full playlist, but I’ll focus on the tracks that truly made the episode special.

No track played this entire season deserves it more than Anya Marina’s wonderful cover of T.I.’s radio-killed “Whatever You Like”. Continue reading →

Lil Wayne, Kanye West, T.I., Jay-Z – U Ain’t Neva Gottz Ask

Lil Wayne, Kanye West, T.I., Jay Z U Aint Neva Gottz Ask listen

No it doesn’t entirely match the energy of “Swagga Like Us,” in fact, its more reminiscent of Mr. Carter off of Wayne’s Tha Carter III but “U Ain’t Neva Gottz Ask” is still an incredible collaboration regardless.

There’s so much going on in this song – the crazy sped up piano, the thuming hand clap like beat, the booming echoes in the background, and of course the re-interpolation of George Michael’s schmaltzy “Careless Whisper.” In the hands of less capable and assured producers all of these elements could have ended up sounding like a mess, but on “U Ain’t Neva Gottz Ask” it all comes together perfectly.

Bonus points for the use of my favorite Jay-Z rhymes, Justify My Thug. Take note Flo Rida and BEP, this is how you build a song around samples. Listen to “U Ain’t Neva Gottz Ask” after the jump Continue reading →

Just Jack – Live Your Life (T.I. & Rihanna Cover)

Just Jack Live Your Life (T.I. & Rihanna Cover) covers
I honestly didn’t think I’d hear T.I. and Rihanna’s haters-step-back “Live Your Life” in a harmonious acoustic arrangement. Props to Just Jack for that. Biggest props to Radio 1 for constantly providing us with amazing covers. You should definitely check their compilation out.

Enjoying my vay-cay, so things will be sorta irregular for a few days.

Mateo – Get Out Of My Head / Live Your Life Remix

Mateo Get Out Of My Head / Live Your Life Remix listen

Too often do I get emails from people claiming so-and-so is the next biggest thing in music. Most of the time they are horribly wrong, but in Mateo’s case, they might be horribly right. I was a Mateo virgin until not too long ago when Quddus from the Q side, (among other things) emailed me Mateo’s remix/re-interpretation of T.I.’s and Rihanna’s “Live Your Life” (easily the biggest song of the last 6 months). Basically, he’s doing what many rappers do in their mixtapes (most famously, Lil Wayne): he’s putting his own vocals over instrumentals we’d recognize. To reiterate Q’s email, I didn’t think anyone would spin “Live Your Life” this way.

Because of my Mateo cherry-poppin’ happened late in life, I asked what was Mateo’s story, here it goes:

Well he comes from good musical genes- his grandfather was a guitarist for King Records and even collaborated with James Brown. Mateo got a degree from Morehouse and a job consulting in NYC but the artist itch was too strong to go that route so he quit his day job to come out to LA where he helped out with the music on the UPN show that Eve starred in but at the same time he was also developing his own stuff. Then when we met 3 years ago he was just starting to do shows and he came up with a song called ‘Complicated’ that was the song I needed to be able to get him a deal at Myspace Records. Here’s a great new “making of” clip that’ll give you an idea about his process:

He was also a writer on a song called “One Night Stand” on Jazmine Sullivan’s new album. Rumor has it his new mixtape Underneath The Sky Ch. 1 will be leaking very soon. Patiently waiting for that. Until then, listen to “Get Out Of My Head / Live Your Life” Continue reading →

Dr. Dre / Nas / T.I. – Topless (radio rip)

Dr. Dre / Nas / T.I. Topless (radio rip) listen

Wait… is this for real? A new Dr. Dre song on the radio? I know how you feel. It’s that awkward feeling that is somewhere in between excited and afraid. Is “Topless” the first single off Dr. Dre’s mythical Detox? I’m not really sure, at all, but this does give me hope that our wait for Detox (eight years and counting) will be a lot shorter than the wait for GNR’s Chinese Democracy. My only worry is that it will disappoint as much as Chinese Democracy (I tried really hard to use the word “suck”).

Or maybe I’m getting ahead of myself.. when he introduced the track, DJ Envy from Hot97 mentioned Nas first. Could this be off one of his new projects? Or what about T.I.? It is my understanding that he is planning to release one of those deluxe edition things for his latest album Paper Trail. I guess he needs the cash flowing while he’s in the big house. Also, did anyone actually hear Dr. Dre rapping? I must have missed it… Let the speculation begin Continue reading →

The performances were so good that I just had to list my 5 favorite performances of the night! Don’t forget to tell me about your favorite performances of the night in the comments.

HM: Adele & Sugarland – What I’d Give / Chasing Pavements

I may not be the biggest country fan around, but I think Jennifer Nettles’ vocal delivery was fantastic, and you know what, the song isn’t so bad either. It’s great to hear beautifully sung music, regardless of genre. And Adele’s followup performance was amazing too. Highlight: Sugarland joining Adele on stage towards the end of “Chasing Pavements.”

Q&A Friday: Is It Too Early To Talk About Music Festivals?

Q&A Friday: Is It Too Early To Talk About Music Festivals? mp3

So this week’s question is an easy one: Are you going to Coachella? Or are you saving your money for another festival? I also know that this passed year hasn’t been all too nice to anyone’s wallet. Hopefully I can help out.

This week’s Q&A is sponsored by the Lagerado Music Festival. They are being really cool and giving PMA Two (2) tickets to giveaway to one lucky winner. That’s right, you get to go to Langerado for FREE. All you have to do is get yourself there, get a hotel, buy your booz and drugs and enjoy the cool lineup (Death Cab For Cutie, Snoop Dogg, The Faint, Ryan Adams, Broken Social Scene, Cold War Kids, Chromeo, Girl Talk, Black Kids, The Virgins, Tokyo Police Club, Ra Ra Riot, ah, just check the whole lineup here), oh and you have to answer the question! Blog Wars: The Genius Playlist | Round 1, Battle 3

On Sunday The Music Slut and We All Want Someone To Shout For were both on the hot seat. It was a close one.  It started out with We All Want ahead by less than 5% and then things switched over to the Music Slut’s favor and sometime between then and now, things were tied 50/50 and We All Want Someone jump ahead by 8%. With 54% of the votes, We All Want Someone to Shout For moves ahead. Sorry Music Slut, you won’t make the second round of  this Blog War.

On this third battle, Ear Farm and The Culture of Me are taking on Lil Wayne’s “Dr. Carter.” I have a feeling we’re about to see two really ghetto playlists.

Stereogum & team9 Present… MySplice III

Stereogum & team9 Present... MySplice III mp3

Stereogum and team9 have teamed up for a third year in a row to bring us their MySplice III mashup compilation. The mix includes 2008 blog staples like Bloc Party, Lykke Le, of Montreal, Beck, and Crystal Castles mashed with 2008’s ineluctable pop hits (Britney Spears, Rihanna, Kanye, Katy Perry). Oh, and they through in some oldies as well (Cyndi Lauper, Guns N’ Roses, etc).

I don’t know if you guys feel it too, but I can’t help but think this is the best MySplice yet.

Stream the whole thing here, and download the mp3s below the player.
