Jay-Z – Off That (ft. Drake) (Prod. Timbaland)

Jay Z Off That (ft. Drake) (Prod. Timbaland) listen
The first couple of singles of The Blueprint 3 have been underwhelming, there’s no doubt of that. His last single, “Run This Town” featuring Kanye West and Rihanna should have been a shining beacon of hope and a highlight for B3, but sadly, it doesn’t even hold a candle to Clipse’s “All Eyes On Me” (I compare the two because they both feature a boring female hook, and other prolific rapper).

Hot off the still-impressive Timbaland machine, “Off That” features a blistering hook brought to your ears by king of the summer, Drake. It is by far the best B3 track I’ve heard so far. “Off That” will serve as The Blueprint 3’s third single, but something tells me it won’t be as successful as “Best I’ve Ever Had.”

Listen to “Off That” here Continue reading →

The Best Pop Songs of the 2000s

I was thinking about this a lot the other night, and I think its time to being the great debate of the Best Pop Song of the 00s over to PMA. Before everyone starts mouthing off some obscure Scandinavian pop songs, here are a few rules.

1. The song had to have achieved notoriety from 2000-present.
2. It pains me to say this, but the song has to have been a nationwide (or worldwide) hit. The bigger, the better, in most cases.

Why? Because pop music is supposed to be universal. Everyone is supposed to enjoy it and love it and everyone can’t love something if they’ve never heard it before. Simple as that.

3. Only one song per artist. Pick their best single, if that helps.

I have a few submissions in mind. Read on to find out Continue reading →

Keri Hilson – Since U Been Gone (Kelly Clarkson Cover)

Keri Hilson Since U Been Gone (Kelly Clarkson Cover) covers
“Since U Been Gone” will probably go down in history as one of the early 00’s best pop songs, along with other pop gems like “Toxic” and “Umbrella.” Like “Toxic” and “Umbrella,” “Since U Been Gone” is no stranger to the cover scene. Since it’s induction into chambers of pop royalty, Robyn, The Gossip, Ted Leo, the Aquabats, and Fucked Up have all covered the song.

Keri Hilson, on many occasions during her stay on Justin Timberlake’s FutureSex/LoveShow, covered Kelly Clarkson’s trademark single and Timbaland and JT have taken the vocals from her live performances put them over a generic Timbo/JT beat. The cover only runs a minute and 31 seconds, but it gives “Since U Been Gone” a nice r&b flavor to it, something I never imagined I’d enjoy. Continue reading →

New Justin Timberlake ft. T.I. – If I (Produced by Timbaland)

New Justin Timberlake ft. T.I. If I (Produced by Timbaland) listen

Justin Timberlake and T.I. hook up for the third time on the Timbaland produced “If I.” This isn’t a “My Love” for sure. Hell it doesn’t even come close to their messy “Dead and Gone” track. But as far as demos go, this is pretty damn good. Maybe after a few more months of studio work, we can get a proper Timbaland beat and not this fake stuff.

If Justin Timberlake’s demos are sounding this good, can we expect his third album to be as good as Future Sex/Love Sounds?

Grab “If I” after the jump. Continue reading →

New Timbaland ft. T-Pain & Missy Elliott – Talk That Shit

New Timbaland ft. T Pain & Missy Elliott Talk That Shit listen
I guess I posted this track a bit too soon earlier. This is the final product fully equipped with Missy Elliott. I am really feeling “Talk That Shit” — but one thing is still unclear, will “Talk That” be on Timbaland’s Shock Value 2 or Missy Elliott’s Block Party, or maybe even T-Pain’s Thr33 Rings.

As Musicology pointed out, Missy has two verses on the track indicating that the song may appear on her upcoming album. Listen to the track below: Continue reading →

‘R.I.P. Paper Planes’ – Yeah Right, Diplo.

R.I.P. Paper Planes Yeah Right, Diplo. listen

Over at Mad Decent, Diplo had this to say about a new “Paper Planes” copycat remix:

La Fonda – Paperplanes <—- Gross
It had a really good run, but it’s over now.

M.I.A. – Paper Planes (La Fonda remix)

Yes, this remix IS completely horrible and should have never been recorded, but I doubt “Paper Planes” is going anywhere. It’s still hot on iTunes — it’s currently sitting at #14 and it’s still in the Top 10 in the US. If this Jigga and M.I.A. joint (”Boys (remix)”) ever hits radio the way “Paper Planes” has, we’re going to listening to M.I.A. clear through 2009.

All this mainstream success has brought M.I.A. out of retirement; she is prepping to do a cheapo re-release of her sophomore album Kala fully-equipped with some high rolling bonus tracks.

But what can we expect from LP number three? More rappers? Of course. What about high profile rappers? I’m afraid so. It doesn’t have to be a bad thing — listen to this:

M.I.A. – Boyz (Jay-Z Remix)

Not bad right? I just hope not every track on LP3 will sound like that Timbaland collaboration.

New Timbaland and T-Pain – Talk

New Timbaland and T Pain Talk listen
Here is a semi-fresh Timbaland leak (the first of two, actually ;) ) — and I really like it. All of my friends really have a problem with Timbo, maybe it’s the way his joints climb the charts or tend to take over the radio, but I always catch myself sticking up for this guy. You say he’s some fluffy commercial fiend, I say he’s one of America’s greatest pop icons of the 21st Century. A true musical genius in my eyes.

I find myself listening to his 2007 album, Shock Value (instrumental version mostly) all the time. The lyrics are, undoubtedly, bullshit, but the music itself is too good to deny. The same goes with “Talk.” I’m not sure if this song will be featured on Timbaland’s highly anticipated Shock Value 2 or T-Pain’s next album.

Oh and T-Pain kills Timbo on his verse. Not that it’s hard or anything, but since when does T-Pain rap? Catch the song below: Continue reading →

Fornication in Cali, and some tunes to get you through the day

Monday Night TV recap:

For those of you who watch Californication, can I just say, I L<3VE David Duchovny. And for those of you who don’t watch Californication, I must say I L<3VE David Duchovny. And, you should check out the show. Great writing, great acting. Lots of fornication, if you’re into watching that sort of thing.

How you like them apples, Dave?

(P.S. A very clever, well thought out promo for the show.. David D is Adam, the women of Cali are Eves offering him their apples of temptation.. ah-ha, clever!)

As for the Hills last night, I don’t know how dumb MTV thinks I am because I was at first appalled at this “Cram Session” business they came up with to stall the story line, and then I was further appalled that I watched the whole thing, despite having religiously followed the show throughout the season. So, they realize that I am pret-ty dumb. I just can’t help but love this show.

Gorilla and his puppet Heidious

In the lieu of pop culture, here’s a delish pop song for Tuesday morn. I know y’all must be sick and tired of hearing ella ella eh eh eh mixes, but this mash-up is the BEST one I’ve heard (and I’ve listened to quite a few!). Check it out:

And a new song: For those of you who loved “Let Me Hold You,” the collaboration between Omarion and Bow Wow (my god, he has grown so much, btw!), check out their new single “Girlfriend.”

Check it out here.

What do you think about their new song?

P.S. I am a huge fan of Omarion’s Icebox song. Love it!
