Sleigh Bells

Sleigh Bells favorite songsPhoto by Punk Photo

Sleigh Bells is the loud, creative forced brought to life by Derek Miller and Alexis Krauss. Derek played in a hardcore band, and Alexis well, she was a, uh… school teacher who played in a pop group in her teenage years. With a winning combination like that, you’re bound to to make some noise. Sleigh Bells are, by most accounts, a new band with a fresh take on pop music, and their EP really hits it out of the park.

They demanded everyone’s attention at this year’s CMJ with their loud and undeniably enjoyable set. Sleigh Bell’s EP/introduction to the world, the Magic Metal CDR sounds like what Discovery’s album would sound like if they pumped the volume up to max.

Sleigh Bells’ defining moment, and my favorite song of theirs so far, “Crown On The Ground” is the perfect mix of Beyonce’s “Upgrade U” and Wavves’ “So Bored“.

Sleigh Bells have also released a new track not found on their Magic Metal CDR. It’s called “Infinity Guitars” and it easily become my second favorite Sleigh Bells track.

Wavves – Friends Were Gone

Wavves Friends Were Gone listen
GorillavsBear:

Brand new unreleased jams from Wavves + Windsurf grace the new summer/beach-themed installment of the limited the FADER/Southern Comfort 7-inch series, and the Fader has hooked us up with one copy to give away. Just leave your name in the comments and I’ll pick a winner tomorrow. Only 500 copies exist, but in the meantime, you can download both songs for free from the folks at Fader.

What are you waiting for? Go over to GvsB and enter for that 7-inch!

“Friends Were Gone” is some seriously irreverent noise-pop fun in the same vein as PMA favorite, “So Bored.” I think Spin magazine was spot on when they said this about Wavves (yeah, it happens!), “wall-punching energy, ugly noise, and raging nostalgia for stale bong water and sunburn.” Wonder how Nathan Williams’ 420 went. How did yours?

Here’s to “Friends Were Gone” making your 4/21 a bit better. Continue reading →

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009 (.25 of the way through)

Today is the 91st day of 2009, or (almost) exactly one quarter of the way through 2009. Is it too soon to start thinking of “Best Songs” honors? I don’t think so!

Before I get into the list, I want to set up some ground rules: The only songs eligible are songs that were released as singles in 2009 (Jan 1st – March 31st, in this case). This will really limit this initial list, as some of my favorite songs of the year have been non-single album tracks, like “Summertime Clothes” by Animal Collective, or “Dull Life” by the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. Well, actually, I think that’s the only rule.

Let’s get on to the list, shall we? Continue reading →

Gun In The Sun

Gun In The Sun listen

WAVVES – Gun In The Sun

I haven’t really gone over the chill, laidback lo-fi, noise-pop darling that is WAVVES — also known as Nathan Williams (accompanied by Ryan Ulsh live). Aside from putting on a good show, and being hyped the heck up by Gorilla vs Bear, I wasn’t too sure about this kid from San Diego. And after some slight confusion and correction, I gave WAVVES a good, hard listen this weekend (I’ll admit that up until now, I’ve only put an half-assed effort into listening to his tunes) and decided it was time to show some love. “Gun In The Sun” is supposed to appear on his second LP, WAVVVES (yes, tripple “V”) via De Stijl in March. But before you listen to “Gun In The Sun” I suggest catching up with his first LP WAVVES (only 2 Vs) and listening to the official first single from WAVVVES/slacker anthem, “So Bored.” Things will make sense from there. Take a listen below: Continue reading →
