La Roux – Tigerlily/Farewell To The Fairground (White Lies Cover)

La Roux Tigerlily/Farewell To The Fairground (White Lies Cover) covers
La Roux is often overshadowed by the more accessible and likable Little Boots, and to be honest, neither of her new singles (In For The Kill, Not Your Toy, Bulletproof) have had any staying power on my iPod — not like their debut single “Quicksand.” Now that La Roux’s debut album has been splattered all over the internet, I’ve had a chance to poke my head in search of a song of “Quicksand” caliber. After a handful of listens, “Tigerlily” seems to be a good candidate. It’s by no means better than “Quicksand,” but it is a lot more interesting than US single “In For The Kill.” Edit: it might just be better than “Quicksand”

“Tigerlily” introduces La Roux’s seductive, sexy side to fantastic result. Elly Jackson’s confined vocals become feral and luring throughout the song; and at one point a remarkably menacing, timely and relevant “Thriller”-esque soliloquy floods the track.

“Tigerlily” precedes “Quicksand” on the eponymous album, marking for one of the year’s most thrilling one, two KO’s, putting it in the company of Little Boots’ “Remedy”-”Meddle,” Passion Pit’s “Little Secrets”-”Moth’s Wings,” Animal Collective’s “Daily Routine”-”Bluish,” and Phoenix’s “Lisztomania”-”1901.” Listen to “Tigerlily” here Continue reading →

White Lies – Nothing To Give (M83 Remix)

White Lies Nothing To Give (M83 Remix) mp3
I saw this lovely remix on my slightly neglected feed reader earlier today, by way of Persona Sauna. White Lies has been one of the more interesting debuts of  ‘09 that has been overshadowed by the great releases of the first half of the year (seriously, will the last half of 2009 even compare?).

2008 favorite, M83 has taken an interest in White Lies and remixed their somewhat overlooked “Nothing To Give.” If you enjoyed Saturdays = Youth, you will like this remix. Give it a listen after the jump. Continue reading →

White Lies – To Lose My Life Album Review

White Lies To Lose My Life Album Review album reviews reviews 2

[rating:68/100]

For those who aren’t familiar with the White Lies, they’re a three piece band from London. Early last month they released their debut LP—To Lose My Life. As with all new bands, it is often customary albeit unnecessary to draw comparisons in sound to already established bands. In the case of the White Lies I’d say it’s a cross between Joy Division and The Bravery/Interpol. Almost to the point that if you’re not fond of them you probably won’t care for the White Lies either. But let’s keep an open mind because I did and I definitely enjoyed it.

After a few listens I discovered that I can’t really find anything inherently bad about this album. Upon my first listen I found that it didn’t blow me away as something totally different or new but just grew on me. So as long as you enter with the mindset that you’ll be listening to a solid album that’s not necessarily ground breaking in any way, then I think you can really enjoy it. If you’re the type that’s constantly striving to find something different then you might be disappointed.  Continue reading →

Some Remixes on a Sunday #3

Some Remixes on a Sunday #3 mp3

Continuing this from two Sundays ago.

It’s crazy how many great mixes you can across in a single week. These 10 were my favorite finds of the week. Big thanks to Ohh! Crapp, Fancy Sounds, Sundtrak, HypeM, and probably the biggest shout out goes to the people who send me their mixes!

On the last “Some Remixes on a Sunday” post, I focused a lot on movies. Mostly the films that I wanted to see. Since then, I have seen Frost/Nixon, The Wrestler, The Reader, Defiance, and Happy-Go-Lucky. I’m still DYING to watch Rachel Getting Married. For some reason, something gets in the way of me watching it at the theater whenever I decide to go out and watch it. And the torrent is nowhere to be found, a little less than a month away from the Oscars. It’s driving me nuts! I’m a sucker for contemp dramas — yes, I’m really pissed at the way Revolutionary Road was royally dissed on the Oscar nominations — so if any of your have some sort of Rachel Getting Married hook-up, pass it along,  yeah?

I can’t really talk much, listening to this new Weezy track that’s sort of ridiculous. Weezy doing rock music is definitely not my cup of tea. More about it tomorrow. Till then, here are my favorite mixes of the week! Continue reading →
