Phoenix – Armistice (YACHT Remix)

Phoenix Armistice (YACHT Remix) mp3
Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix (Remix Collection) is shaping up to be a killer. It’s filled with remixes that will move your feet, and other remixes that will connect with you on a deeper level. Listening though them all, YACHT’s remix of “Armistice” is a clear standout.

The remix is quite tame, compared to some of the chaos that went down on YACHT’s SeeMystery Lights, or their remix of Wolfmother’s “New Moon Rising,” but the mid-tempo bleeps and slabs of synth fit the aesthetic of “Armistice” like a glove. It’s an artsy and fresh view on a late 00’s classic, but I don’t think anything will top the original. But I’m still chalking this one up as a victory for YACHT, as well as Phoenix for continuing to prove to be the most remix-friendly act of 2009. As far as I can tell, this is a PMA first, so have go listen to the remix! Continue reading →

Los Campesinos – The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future

Los Campesinos The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future listenI was a little timid before listening to Los Campesinos’ new song “The Sea Is A Good Place To Think Of The Future”. The group has thrived with their crazy, energetic, unconstrained, and crazy rock-pop music and departure into the more somber unknown is a real risk.

The song opens up with slow strings and an almost spoken narrative of an eating disorder. Crashing cymbals follow a little later behind a very well sung chorus. The song keeps building and growing creating a really powerful atmosphere in the song. Clearly Los Campesinos are heading in some kind of new direction, and it is nice to see that the band has embraced this musical growth. This track should really create excitement for the rest of their latest LP.

Speech Debelle won the coveted British “Mercury Prize.” This, of course, got me listening. Check out this jazzy, dizzying, utterly fantastic number, “The Key.” I feel bad that I have just started listening to this spunky emcee, but I won’t dwell in the past… pick up her album, Speech Therapy, today.

YACHT (who are touring with the Yeah Yeah Yeahs) has laid their remix magic all over Wolfmother’s new single, “New Moon Rising” (this may be connected to the new Twilight movie. No, probably not. But hey…). Check out other remixes by Riton and Fontan @ Filter.

I sincerely believe that there came a moment in everybody’s lives early last year when they first heard the Ting Tings’ “Shut Up And Let Me Go”. There we were, listening to the most hotly tipped music this side of Little Boots, smugly nodding along to a pretty decent song. But then… that yelp! “HEY!”. Computers exploded everywhere, speaker systems were quickly turned off, and thousands of hypem.com perusers trotted down to the nearest Doctor’s surgery to have their ear drums checked for signs of permanent damage. I may still have use of my ears, but Yacht’s latest album, “See Mystery Lights”, contains far too many moments like that. Depressingly, these moments scar an album that is, for the most part, an exceptionally impressive artistic statement and further proof of the genius of James Murphy’s DFA. Continue reading →

YACHT – Summer Song, It’s Boring/You Can Live Anywhere You Want

YACHT Summer Song, Its Boring/You Can Live Anywhere You Want listen
It’s no coincidence that I just got through talking about how great summer songs are. Now YACHT are just making it to easy. This cut, off their upcoming See Mystery Lights due out July 28th, is simply called, “Summer Song.” Given my personal working definition (”luscious, almost eatable…hey fill the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day, scoring every ice cream cone, beach party, bon fire, and that afternoon hammock nap”), naming a track “Summer Song” is quite ambitious. Luckily for YACHT, I respond well to ambition and in the case of “Summer Song,” it pays off generously.

“Move your feet to the summer song,” we are urged throughout this bouncy and unquestionably danceable track. Will it be at the top of everyone’s playlist this summer? Continue reading →

pmaCAST #14: Yes, I Love Fred Falke Remixes

pmaCAST #13 The Twist on Natural Law Episode mp3

DOWNLOAD: MP3 / iTUNES

And here is the fourteenth installment of the pmaCAST, a bi-monthly playlist that I hope will enrich and soundtrack your week. This week I went with a digital vibe that I have been shaking off for a while now. It has caught up with me, and has now permeated through the pmaCAST. I use some all-time favorites (Belle & Sebastien, LCD Soundsystem, Roisin Murphy, Daft Punk, Peaches) as well as some new-found loves (Fred Falke, obiously, everyone else).

I’m not going to upload and post up all of the tracks like I did last time, but I will put up a few tracks featured on this weeks’ playlist that I think will make your life a lot less sucky.

Ratatat – Lex
MEN – Credit Card Babie$
The Pragmatic – You Blame Me
The Asteroids Galaxy Tour – Push The Envelope

Please (HEART) these songs if you enjoyed them!
