Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Hysteric

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Hysteric listen

Karen Dancing In The Rain (Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Osheaga 2009 Montreal) by Anirudh Koul

Rarely am I at a loss of words. Rarely is “wow” the only thing I am able to express audibly. “Hysteric,” when played live, is one of the few songs that make the words fall out of my head and out of my reach. Continue reading →

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Heads Will Roll (A-Trak Remix) **UPDATE**

Yeah Yeah Yeahs Heads Will Roll (A Trak Remix) **UPDATE** mp3

The last time a big named decided to remix the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, it left a sour taste in my mouth. When I heard A-Trak dropped a killer remix of YYY’s “Heads Will Roll” at this year’s Lollapalooza, I knew I had to get my hands on it. Unfortunately, A-Trak has kept a tight lid on this one, only letting good friends like Busy P and Erol Alkan play it in their sets.

Thankfully, the ever-dependable Annie Mac and her BBC Radio 1 show, we now have a radio rip of this killer remix. Annie herself says that she thinks this remix is A-Trak’s best work to-date. I thank the magnificent Disco Dust for the full quality version of the remix.

For months I have said that “Heads Will Roll” was the most remixable track of ‘09, what “Kids” was in 2008. “Kids” had Justice Pet Shop Boys and Soulwax remixes to its credit, and I believe “Heads Will Roll” deserves the same quality of treatment.

Listen to A-Trak’s remix of “Heads Will Roll” after the jump Continue reading →

[rating:74/100]
Karen O and The Kids’ Where The Wild Things Are OST is an album that is impossible to consider abstracted from the movie it is destined to accompany. Unlike some soundtracks merely meant to advance the plot, provide suspense, or fill the void left by a lack of dialogue, this soundtrack embodies everything the movie is. The film’s characters make appearances, the themes of the songs match those of the book and movie, and the soundtrack’s parabola parallels that of Where The Wild Things Are’s plot.

So it is ironic, then, that I find myself reviewing this album prior to ever seeing the film. I feel, in many ways, that I’ve heard a sneak preview – that what I’ll see on the screen will simply be the music videos I’ve been imagining accompanying this album all along. And the fact that the film will likely exceed the expectations that this soundtrack creates fits with everything else related to the media blitz that has been WTWTA. Continue reading →

Best Album of 2003 Poll

Best Albums of 00 | 01 | 02 | 03 | 04 | 05 | 06 | 07 | 08 | 09

Moving onto the fourth year of the decade, we continue to rely on your votes to find the best albums of each year. We’re taking an objective and fresh look at finding our favorite albums of the last 10 years.

As always, I’ve listed the 10 best albums, in accordance to top critics like the undeniable Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll, The Onion (A.V. Club), Pitchfork, PopMatters, and Q Magazine.

Please vote for the album you think was the best in 2003. If your choice isn’t on here, we’d love to see it in the comments section (though, we’d appreciate if you’d vote for your favorite on the list anyway). Here are 2003’s finalists:

A. Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Fever To Tell, “Y Control
B. OutKast: Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, “The Way You Move
C. The White Stripes: Elephant, “Seven Nation Army
D. Radiohead: Hail To The Thief ,”2+2=5
E. The Shins: Chutes Too Narrow, “So Says I
F. Dizzee Rascal: Boy In Da Corner, “I Luv U
G. Death Cab For Cutie: Transatlanticism, “The Sound of Settling
H. Sufjan Stevens: Michigan, “Holland
I. Blur: Think Tank, “Out Of Time
J. Four Tet: Rounds “She Moves She

Trust me, 2003 was one of the hardest lists to make.

Karen O. and The Kids – All Is Love

Karen O. and The Kids All Is Love listen

“All Is Love” is a single from the soundtrack for Spike Jonze’s new film Where The Wild Things Are. The song is sung by Karen O. and a children’s choir that takes the lead on vocals. “All Is Love” is full of the energy and playfulness which the movie’s trailer easily conveys.

If you are looking for nothing more than a happy song to sing along to that will help you get through the day then you should definitely go ahead and download this song. A lot of respected indie artists are helping out on the soundtrack for the children’s book which was adored by many of us as kids so the entire soundtrack should be something to look forward to. Best Songs of the Decade (2000-2009)

I wasn’t going to do this. Working on the Best Albums of the 2000s was going to be enough work. But after reading through some pretty great lists by Pitchfork, I Guess I’m Floating and Gorilla vs Bear, I was reminded of something very important — although the album is the most vital instrument a musician has at his disposal to get an idea or feeling across to listeners, we can’t undermine the importance of a song. A song gives you small doses of relief, comfort, or what have you, minutes at a time.

I gave a fair amount of thought into this list, but for the most part, I knew how it would turn out. This list is mine and mine alone; I am inviting you to my world where I don’t need to explain myself or answer to anyone. But as always, I encourage you all to leave your thoughts and your personal picks in the comment section.

I would like to end with… well, I can’t really say it better than Connor from IGIF. The last 10 years have been the biggest of my life, especially my life as a music lover, so these next 120 songs are the songs that have shaped and molded me into whoever I am today. That’s as personal as it gets.

Harlem Shakes – Strictly Game, Music Video / Y Control (Yeah Yeah Yeahs Cover)

YouTube Preview Image
What a concept for a video. I’m really impressed by the creativity and originality. The second time around you watch it it’s even cooler. A concept so simple, yet (correct me if I’m wrong) never really been done before. Badass.

Also, Harlem Shakes’ keyboardist, Kendrick Strauch, got his Karen O on and covered the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ “Y Control” from their critically acclaimed debut, Fever To Tell. The cover is simple, dreamy and smooth. Towards the end, Strauch’s “Y Control” turns into a shimmery, disco-flavored ballad. All the polish doesn’t ever reach the heights Karen O and the YYYs take “Y Control” to. But can anyone? Probably not.
