Yes Giantess “The Ruins”

Yes Giantess The Ruins mp3

Boston’s Yes Giantess for exploded onto our radar with last summer’s sugary synth-pop hit, “Tuff N Stuff”, which then became one of our favorite songs of last year. Since then, the band has toured with Little Boots, La Roux and Marina and the Diamonds.

With their second Neon Gold release, “The Ruins,” Yes Giantess have their eyes set on becoming a household name. “The Ruins” — produced by Starsmith, the pop wizard behind Ellie Goulding — grounds itself on the dark side of the mostly sunny pop spectrum with a massive bassline and even bigger hook, achieving instant replay-ability.

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009

The Absolute Best Songs of 2009 featureArtwork by the talented and generous Adam Sarpalius.

The final list is here. We have been working on this Absolute (sarcasm) Best Songs of 2009 list all year, updating it at the end of every quarter. I was only going to have PMA’s Top 50 of the year listen, but I couldn’t narrow it down beyond the top 75. This list will represent and acknowledge some of the artists I felt had to be left out of our Best Albums of 2009 list.

As always, I upheld only one rule while making this list: a song cannot be on this list, unless it was released as a single. As a reminder, here is my definition of the word “single” — 1) A song that has been given away for free to promote an upcoming album (known as a promotional single). 2) A song that has been played on TV or the radio (two of the largest mediums of discovering new music). 3) A song with its own music video and/or EP. 4) Loophole: an album-track that has attracted enormous amounts of attention that it’s become that artist’s “calling card” of sorts.

I want to thank everyone who takes the time to leave a comment, even if its obvious that you came here through Google (PMA pops up when you google “Best Songs of 2009″). As always, don’t be shy to share your personal favorites of the year. Trust me when I tell you I didn’t go out of my way to list all of your favorite songs of the year, so if you want those songs represented, list them yourselves in the comments. I also want to thank the wonderful contributors this site has for helping me with this list. And finally, Adam Sarpalius, whose work as graced this list since July.

Now, onto the Top 75: Continue reading →

Yes Giantess’ Jan Rosenfeld Wants You To Dance, Played with Little Boots in New York

Yes Giantess Jan Rosenfeld Wants You To Dance, Played with Little Boots in New York feature

PMA was at Little Boots’ Bowery show featuring Yes Giantess and The Plastiscines Wednesday. We got to talk to Jan Rosenfeld of Yes Giantess outside the venue standing in front of the JMZ Bowery station subway entrance. It was a short, five minute chat before the start of the show.

As you know, Yes Giantess (formerly just Giantess) are the four piece synthpop band from Boston that caught our attention after showing up in the pages of NME amid much praise. Jan’s the lead vocalist and songwriter of the group. We asked him to explain a few things about the band and he obliged. Below, we discuss everything from porn to Twitter. Jan enlightens us on the band’s influences, how they got hooked up with miss Boots herself, and their undying drive to get you kids dancing. Continue reading →

Super Cool MP3 Grab Bag #9

Super Cool MP3 Grab Bag #9 listen

I do these grab bag posts every once in a while. These are basically songs that have just barely missed my radar. Some older than others, but they’re all pretty good.

Yes Giantess

Yes Giantess favorite songs
I was never really sold on Yes Giantess (formerly just Giantess). Something always felt off. But when NME started hyping them up for their Radar tour, I started paying better attention. Say what you will about NME, but they have turned me onto some great acts (La Roux, Friendly Fires, Little Boots, The Big Pink), so I’ll give anyone they hype a second chance.

The electropop outfit’s “Tuff ‘n’ Stuff” was released earlier this year by Neon Gold, backed by “You Were Young.” The first half of the song is uninteresting, but somewhere near the 2 minute mark, “Tuff ‘n’ Stuff” is injected with Grade A pop magic. The connection wasn’t instant, at least not with me, but with a few listens, it becomes painfully clear that this song is pretty damn great.

Neon Gold have  also posted a brand new Yes Giantess remix of Erik Hassle’s debut UK single “Don’t Bring Flowers.” I’m not a big Hassle fan, but for those who must know, he is an up and coming Swedish pop act. You might dig his “Hurtful.”
