Best Albums of 2000 Poll

As you know, I like lists. All kinds of lists. But my favorite are musically inclined lists. The end of the decade is approaching rather quickly, and with lists on my mind, I’ve been thinking about something I think a you all ought to be thinking about. The best albums of the 2000s. What were the first great albums of this millennium? Jeff Lind is down for the task of finding out. But he won’t do it alone.

From now up until late December, we will try to figure out what have been the best albums of the 00s, by year. This will amount to a total of 10 albums, one from each year, to keep things even. This is how it will work — for each year, Jeff and I will pick one album as our favorite, but we will also hold a poll for you all to vote on to find the PMA Readers’ choice for best album. Hopefully we will decide on two distinct albums to remember that given year.

We will be starting off with the year 2000. I have drawn up a list of 10 albums released in the year 2000 (in the US). This list was derived from various year-end lists from publications like: Village Voice Pazz & Jop Poll, Pitchfork, Mojo and Metacritic. Please select the album you think was the best in 2000. If your choice isn’t on here, we’d love to see it in the comments section (though, we’d appreciate if you’d vote for your favorite on the list anyway).

A. OutKast – Stankonia
B. Radiohead – Kid A
C. Modest Mouse – The Moon And Antarctica
D. Yo La Tengo – And Then Nothing Turned Itself Inside-Out
E. Eminem – The Marshall Mathers LP
F. PJ Harvey – Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea
G. The New Pornographers – Mass Romantic
H. Primal Scream – XTRMNTR
I. Aimee Mann – Bachelor No. 2
J. Sleater-Kinney – All Hands On The Bad One

Yo La Tengo – Here To Fall

Yo La Tengo Here To Fall listen
Some claim that our generation has a phobia of commitment. I guess we deserve it, with all the shit that’s proliferating the mainstream media, sometimes it seems romance and/or commitment are things of the past.

However, Yo La Tengo’s newest release totally negates any of these accusations. A mellow, jazzy number, “Here to Fall” is the type of track that takes you back to those infant stages of romance, when the butterflies were still fresh and the optimism was high.

(Deep Sigh)

The second release off their highly anticipated Popular Songs album, it’s an ode to falling in love, or at least, getting to that point.

It says something that Pitchfork’s already deemed it fitting under the “best new music” category. Laden with strings, cool mellow cymbals and just enough backbeat to give the track a little kick, Ira Kaplan’s soothing vocals are nothing short of dreamy.

“Here to Fall” is a solid addition to what is sure to be a great album from Yo La Tengo, due out September 8th.

Verdict: Giving the hopeless romantics out there (myself included) some optimism. A very cool track, with an almost movie soundtrack-esque quality about it.

Listen to it here. Continue reading →

Yo La Tengo – Periodically Double or Triple

Yo La Tengo Periodically Double or Triple listen
Yo La Tengo have unleashed the first single from their highly anticipated new album, Popular Songs, out September 8th. Look at the gorgeous cover art up there. Yo La Tengo remain as one of my all-time most respected bands and one of the first bands to really usher me under the “indie” umbrella while a torrential downpour of commercial rap was attacking my then-bulky iPod.

This new single is as cool and smooth as they come. “Periodically Double or Triple” is led by a groovy bassline and even surprises you before it’s halfway done. Really looking forward to hearing some more of Popular Songs. Listen to “Periodically Double or Triple” after the jump. Continue reading →

What’s Going on This Week?

Whats Going on This Week? gigsAnd here begins a new weekly (no really, weekly!) post from your pals at PMA- a guide to the week in concerts in LA, NYC, Chicago, London, and Sydney!

NYC has a grrreat set of shows in the area this week. Tuesday and Thursday night you can catch Matisyahu at Webster Hall for 35 buckaroos. If you miss him there, you can catch him at the Music Hall of Williamsburg on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

If 35 is a little much for your pocket, you may want to consider checking out our favorite cutesy singer, Kimya Dawson, made famous from everyone’s favorite (well, not my dad’s) cutesy movie, Juno. She’s playing Friday night at the Bowery Ballroom for a very reasonable $13.

And don’t forget to spend one of your eight nights on hanukkah with Yo La Tengo, playing their traditional eight-night gig at Maxwell’s, over in my home state, NJ. The shows are SOLD OUT, but craigslist proves to be helpful with these kinds of things.

Not too much going down in LA this week.Your best bet is Saturday night at the Spaceland, with two of my favorite newer bands. Continue reading →
