You and your dad were probably equally upset when R.E.M. announced their breakup, but the band’s upcoming greatest hits package Part Lies, Part Truth, Part Heart, Part Garbage: 1982-2011 includes some previously unreleased material that will probably assuage the pain for a little while.
“We All Go Back to Where We Belong,” recorded with Collapse Into Now producer Jacknife Lee, is a simple kind of eulogy of a song, all emotive strings, simple guitar, and a surprisingly refined Michael Stipe asking “Is this really what you want?” It’s a loaded question if there ever was one. Take a listen.
