Fans were disappointed last week when Kendrick Lamar chose his new single “Alright” as the only song from To Pimp a Butterfly during his festival gigs at Sweetlife and Sasquatch. It made no sense that his set would completely ignore the nearly unanimous album of the year frontrunner. A prevailing theory among fans was that Kendrick Lamar, a noted perfectionist, simply was not comfortable performing his new material live.
And maybe there was something to that theory because Lamar’s set at Summer Jam this weekend included the live debuts of TPaB highlights “King Kunta”, “The Blacker the Berry” and “Hood Politics”. He also performed “Alright” during the brief, 11-track set. Perhaps in time, To Pimp a Butterfly will make up more than 40% of his set.
