Empress Of, the project of Brooklyn’s Lorely Rodriguez, might only have a single 7″ to her name so far, but those two songs have got legs – she just performed an acoustic version of her debut single “Don’t Tell Me” (the b-side on that lone 7″) for the always-excellent Yours Truly. Our favorite thing about Empress Of is how she effortlessly manipulates her voice – hitting notes you won’t believe, navigating complex melismas, giving her beautifully simple lyrics deft, fascinating rhythm, and that’s on incredible display here. Check it out.
