On July 26, Def Jam will commercially release Nostalgia, ULTRA., the debut mixtape from their new golden boy, Frank Ocean. The OFWGKTA cohort released the mixtape on his Tumblr page earlier this year in defiance of the record label who had lost its faith in him. The tape was a smashing success with both critics and fans, and now Ocean’s latest list of studio-fellows (Beyonce, Nas, Pharrell, Kanye West, Jay-Z) reads like a Who’s Who in contemporary hip-hop. This should sound familiar — R&B and sad-sack rap powerhouse Drake semi-independent career followed a similar trajectory.

With the commercial release of the ‘tape drawling closer, Frank Ocean has released a drugged-out video for Nostalgia, ULTRA.‘s first single (and also one of the best tracks), “Novacane.” If you were wondering what made Frank Ocean so Odd Future, this video should clear things up.
