For BBC’s Radio 1, Gorillaz turned in a set of tunes from 2010’s Plastic Beach and a piano-heavy, swooning cover of the xx’s 2009 single “Crystallized.” It’s all xylophone and minor piano chords, Damon Albarn’s tender voice as heartwrenching as that of the song’s original writers, Romy Madley Croft and Oliver Sim. Putting the original’s driving guitar riff on piano makes tremendous sense – it maintains the lovelorn sensuousness that makes the xx’s song so widely appealing, and doesn’t so much update it as make it more timeless.
