New Jersey musician Dayve Hawk, better known by his nom de chillwave Memory Tapes, returns after critically acclaimed 2009 release Seek Magic with hazy, dark new single “Pretend the Devil Isn’t Real.” It’s an instrumental track – aside from the occasional wordless choir interlude – that sounds like its title, starting with a buildup of clarinets and handclaps on top of a riff that sounds like the pan flute soundtrack of Herzog’s “Aguirre, the Wrath of God” before devolving into synth that sounds like a pitch-shifted fire alarm, warmed up with strings and choir oohs and aahs. Give it a listen.
