NYC and LA are having a slow post-NYE concert week. Chi-town invites Grey's Anatomy darlings. London offers ex-druggies and... Chris Brown. And PMA thinks Australia is cool.
Check what's going on in NYC, LA, Chicago, London, and Syndey this week!
In New York City: NME's best-of '08 list had a surprising pick right around the 4 spot: Glasvegas. Well, surprising for us Americans, most of whom have not yet experienced their fantastic, self-titled album. This band, hailed as "the new Oasis," has an excellent sound and will be rocking both the Virgin Megastore AND David Letterman tonight, and will be at the Bowery on Tuesday. If you'd rather some American rock, check out Okkervil River at The Bell House on Tuesday as well.
Kind-of-beloved indie rockers Takka Takka will be jamming at the BAM cafe on Saturday night for absolutely free. If you'd rather pay for a concert, go check out the beautiful music of La Strada (check out "The Sun Song" on their Myspace, it's remarkable) at Union Hall for 10 bucks.
Finish out your week with the Vivian Girls in the Living Room, playing the fantastic KidRockers series. And don't forget to bring your kid- or else you can't get in! No, seriously!
In L.A.: Your selection is a little more limited in Los Angeles this week. Bands with great names are abound (Gay Beast, Magic Johnson), but none whose music I can attest to. Your best bet is the Natural History Museum on Friday night, where The Little Ones and Plants And Animals will be playing. Otherwise, go see Slumdog Millionaire or Benjamin Button- both are fantastic.
In Chi-Town: If you like The Fray, it would probably be a good idea for you to head over to The Metro on Friday night. If you don't like them, don't go.
If you're feeling horn-y (pun!), see Reel Big Fish and Streetlight Manifesto, ska's ultimate tag team, at the House of Blues on Monday night (the 12th).
In London: Fresh off of his New Year's resolution to give up drugs, rocker Peter Doherty will be playing the Rythym Factory on Thursday and Friday night.
Also on Thursday night, The Clientele and Marching Band (not an actual marching band) will be rocking the Luminaire.
The Duke Spirit will be playing the 100 Club on Sunday, if they're your thing. If they're not, Chris Brown is over at the O2 Arena. Take your pick!
And in Sydney: The Kooks and Lykke Li TONIGHT! At the Hodern Pavillion and Oxford Art Factory, respectively. Go! The Kooks are also playing The Palace Thursday night. Both shows are sold out, but I'm sure you could find some tickets if you REALLY want to go.
Tuesday, you've got The Hives, Santogold, and Franz Ferdinand! You aussies are spoiled. They're playing The Metro Theater, The Forum, and The Enmore Theater, also respectively.
The Black Keys with Gomez AND Dr. Dog at the Palais on Sunday? Awesome.
Oh, and Santogold's playing again at the Sydney festival Saturday night. A-Trak is there too. That's just the first night of this massive festival, which Bon Iver will also be eventually playing. Australia is cool.
