Janelle Monae Debuts "Electric Lady" and "Dorothy Dandridge Eyes"

Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae’s taken her time recording the followup to her starmaking 2010 debut The ArchAndroid, but she recently took to the stage at the Toronto Jazz Festival to debut two new songs, reportedly connected to her two upcoming albums. If you can handle a bit of ambient crowd noise, check out the recordings – “Electric Lady” pays as much homage to classic disco-funk as it does to Monae muse Jimmy Hendrix, while slow jam “Dorothy Dandridge Eyes” brings the tender, lilting strings and stirring, orchestral balladry. They’re two very, very different songs, which has us really curious about where Monae’s going – hopefully, we’ll see really soon. Check out both performances.
